  1. I think they would also need to pick up one of the many 2b options available this offseason also. The list is long at that spot: Soriano Kent Durham Giles Loretta Lugo Walker Iwamura
  2. For the last 3 years, his only injury is a broken hand. We should get rid of Derrek Lee if that's the case.
  3. He may not have over 600 at bats in a season, but he's had more than 600 plate appearances in a season. The value of a walk when one is not getting a hit of some sort should be of utmost concern with this team now and in the future. While it doesn't really matter all that much in the big picture, Hendry may covet a power left handed bat if he retains Ramirez. A line up that features Murton, Barrett, Lee and Ramirez has plenty of pop from the right side. A guy who can really mash against RHP has to be considered an added bonus.
  4. Not that I'm convinced it would happen, but what is the likelihood that a platoon of Jones/Jose Guillen or Craig Wilson or a comparable player could outproduce Sheffield?
  5. Shouldn't Sheffield (along with Moises and Bonds) be considering DH jobs? My issue with Sheffield is that he'll want an extension, and he would be very difficult to trade with his NTC. It's quite possible that the Cubs would be on the hook for a guy who is no longer playing with the team because he is broken down, ala Bagwell. Is Sheffield a lock to provide more offense than Jacque Jones in 2007, let alone 2008? With JD Drew now available, I'd be doing my best imitation of Hendry going after Furcal with JD Drew.
  6. 2004: .281/.337/.469 2005: .264/.325/.468 2006: .246/.306/.422 2007: ? .228/.290/.405 works for me. Great signing, Houston.
  7. I like this move. Overpay for a guy who is clearly breaking down.
  8. I heard only recently that Drew had an opt out clause. A day later, he opted out. Awesome! I'd have given up a lot to bring Drew. Now he can be signed as a free agent. Okay, Jim. Bring back Aramis and reel in Drew. If they signed both of these guys, I actually wouldn't mind hanging on to Jones unless someone wowed me into trading him. That actually takes a lot for me to say, because I am not in the least bit enamored with Jones in any way. Murton, Drew and Jones in the outfield works for me. When Pie is ready, Jones can be traded for pitching or another need. 2b and SS is where the Cubs can then spin a horrible offense into a good offense. I still really like the idea of sending a boatload of prospects to Florida, Dontrelle Willis goes to the Yankees and A-Rod comes to Chicago.
  9. I like bringing back Miller. I'd try to do the same with Kerry Wood.
  10. Sure seems like Brian wants to play with his brother pretty bad. There was discussion last year that Brian would be willing to play wherever his brother was. Now, the discussion is Marcus could end up where Brian's at.
  11. Dave Roberts would be a nice pick up. He doesn't block Pie, can play any outfield position, is a much better lead off option than Pierre, and wouldn't require emptying the bank account to sign. Pie could impress enough in the Spring to land the everyday CF job. There are much worse 4th outfielders out there than Dave Roberts. I can think of 3 right away. John Mabry, Angel Pagan, Freddie Bynum.....
  12. Which likely makes Scott Hairston available. But, I'm not really sure he's anymore than a utility player at this point.
  13. Is Aybar making Marcus Giles expendable at 2b in Atlanta?
  14. Definitely old for never being above AA ball except for his late season call up last year. But, it does appear as though he has some tremendous pop in his bat. Very good patience as well. I like Barfield a lot more, though.
  15. Makes sense for Cleveland. Marte is ahead of Kouzmanoff at 3b. They were also discussing the possibility of bringing Belliard back to play 2b. Now they don't have to. I just read the article and noticed the comments about Giles. My guess is San Diego probably already has something in the works to bring in Giles.
  16. Does this mean they bring Walker or Bellhorn back? Strange move.
  17. And after watching Hampton implode, it might just have re-assured their position not to offer too many years. I hope I'm wrong. I hope Ramirez is a Cub for many years. I just have no faith that Hendry values Ramirez as much as I do.
  18. Where are the Yankees at right now? Randy Johnson Mike Mussina (most likely returning) Carl Pavano Jaret Wright Shawn Chacon Chin Meing Wang Philip Hughes You can pretty much pencil in Johnson, Mussina and Wang for rotation spots. Wright is making close to 8m a year to start. Pavano will make somewhere around that as well. If they traded for Freddy Garcia on a Sheffield deal, it's crowded before they ever turn to Matsuzaka, Schmidt or Zito.
  19. Do the Yankees have any shot at all at Schmidt or Zito? Both are rumored to prefer the left coast. Wheelbarrows full of money tend to sway a person's decision, but I don't see it happening for those two. They'll get a wheelbarrow full of money no matter who they sign with.
  20. Doesn't the leading contender change once it's determined which teams lost out on Matsuzaka?
  21. Since there is no hurry on Aramis' part, is it possible that Hendry will need to show Aramis that he is serious about improving the team by signing some big names (not there are many big names to draw from) before he'll re-sign with the Cubs? Just tossing some thoughts out there.
  22. Hendry doesn't like long term deals. Moreno probably wouldn't blink at throwing a 7 or 8 year deal at him.
  23. I guess I'm having trouble seeing what the allure is here for Aramis to return. 1) Local media is badmouthing his work ethic. 2) Other DR players treated pretty poorly on their departures. 3) A tremendous regression by the organization since he first came here. 4) New manager and coaches. 5) Hot commodity on the free agent market, where he can pick and choose what team he signs with. As most free agents tend to do, I can see Aramis picking a team that is in a better position to be playoff bound. 6) Potential to go back to being a role player, rather than be counted on as the main producer. Well, if he signs for 15m+, I guess this is quite a stretch. But, Vlady is the main guy in Anaheim. 7) Cubs haven't exactly rolled out the red carpet to him as his days to free agency counted down. 8) Not many quality players to improve the team enough to turn a horrible season in 2006 into a winning season in 2007. If the Angels, Dodgers and Cubs were all offering the same amount, I just don't see enough to inspire someone to pick the Cubs over the other two teams.
  24. I hope Bradley can stay healthy. I think he can make an impact in the passing game if he was suited up long enough to play a few series of downs. Gage can leave now.
