  1. SS- Lugo CF- Soriano LF- Murton or CF- Lugo LF- Soriano SS- Izturis No brainer. But, even better would be: CF-Vernon Wells 2b- Soriano LF- Murton SS- Lugo
  2. Most teams seem to prefer a veteran, defensive back up catcher. That explains why the Eddie Perez', Gary Bennett's and Henry Blanco's of the world continue to keep jobs.
  3. He was waived. Oakland picked him up.
  4. On the 40-man roster, not the 25-man. The third catcher would be in Iowa. Unless the CBA changed the rule on drafted Rule 5 players, the team that drafted him would have to keep Fox on their 25 man roster all year in order to retain him. How many teams can afford to carry a rookie catcher on their roster all season. How many can afford to carry a 3rd catcher? That's what I was getting at. It doesn't seem all that risky to me that they expose Fox to Rule V. If a team drafts him, work out a trade and call it good. Looking back, it would have been nice to work out a trade for Sisco, Dubois and ole what's his name...... The guy drafted by Florida who has spent a better part of his Cub career injured.
  5. How many teams can afford to go with 3 catchers? Those teams that would only go with 2 catchers would be willing to sit a rookie on the bench all year? It seems like a stretch to me.
  6. They shoudn't need to offer him arbitration. Someone will likely sign him before the deadline. It won't cost them any compensation, so why not?
  7. 2 of the top 3 are no longer with their teams. Hmm.
  8. He does have trouble with that. I always thought that his pitching staff didn't really help him with that all that much, though. Zambrano's stuff is so amazing, it's almost a guess by the catcher as to where to position his glove. Maddux is one of the easiest guys in the league to run on. Hill has a slow curve ball. Marshall has a slow curve ball, etc...
  9. I actually liked a few of those guys, but didn't feel it would be fair to leave them out. The point is that they value a guy like Ordonez or Enrique Wilson over someone like Theriot or Bobby Hill. At least Theriot has done something with his time in the bigs other than stinking up the joint. And I can live with a subpar guy on the bench like DeRosa or Izturis if all they really are is bench players who give the starter a breather once in a blue moon. But, how many games has Neifi started in the last 2 years? How many games did he bat at the top of the order? Sure, Dusty filled out the line up card, but Hendry could have put his foot down on that long ago. He seemed fine with watching a guy who can't get on base hit 2nd all year long. Rey Ordonez was only with the team for a week or two. Did he bat at the top of the order? Yep. Enrique Wilson? Check. Izturis being penciled in to play SS is just more of the same. Bobby Hill has put up a better OBP in his brief career with Pittsburgh than most of the other guys on that list. Though I'm not complaining about having Aramis on the roster. Just illustrating that this team is clueless when it comes to OBP.
  10. Barrett reminds me of Mike Lieberthal. Liebs sure broke down in a hurry.
  11. The Dodgers had Kent, Furcal, Betemit and Lugo for their middle infield along with Izturis. The Cubs have a valuable arm to trade with a team attempting to win their division and go deep into the playoffs and a plethora of prospects to offer. The best LA had to give was Izturis? I would have told them to shop somewhere else. The old saying is "you gotta give something to get something" was certainly in play, but completely ignored. My apologies. I didn't have a chance to rant about this deal when it happened. That deal still makes me angry. Mainly because Izturis is dead weight taking up a roster spot and hogging payroll to do so. The player that Izturis's stats closest resembles at age 26? Royce Clayton.
  12. Better yet, I'm dying to know how Hendry could make such a horrible trade for Izturis with Maddux after LA came and and swooped up Furcal out of Hendry's basket of goodies. Then, to make it worse, Colletti signed Nomar and further rubbed Hendry's nose in it. Then, he traded Milton Bradley (someone Dusty was at least interested in) to someone else. All of that, and Hendry gives Maddux to the Dodgers for a broken down, no hit SS that makes way too much money for what little he can provide with a bat.
  13. to reinforce this statement... Izturis career numbers .259 ave .336 slg .295 OBP Haha. He's not even a .300 OBP guy. I've had it up to here with guys like this on the Cubs roster: Damian Jackson Cesar Izturis Rey Ordonez Jose Macias Freddie Bynum Neifi Perez Ronny Cedeno Lenny Harris Jose Hernandez Ramon Martinez Enrique Wilson Tony Womack Jerry Hairston Jr. John Mabry Alex Gonzalez Augie Ojeda Bobby Hill (oldcubsfan will appreciate that I added him to this list) This is just infielders and just during the Baker administration. Look at that list. That's an average of more than 4 horrid infielders per year. I could do the same with the outfield. You remember names like Troy O'Leary, Jeromy Burnitz, Angel Pagan, Jason Dubois, Todd Hollandsworth, Doug Glanville, Trenidad Hubbard, Tom Goodwin, Calvin Murray, Ben Grieve, Matt Lawton, Juan Pierre and Jody Gerut. This is a big market team. Look at this list and tell me we can't do better than sub .300 OBP's and I'll eat my shorts. 2003: 13th in NL in OBP 2004: 11th in NL in OBP 2005: 12th in NL in OBP 2006: 16th in NL in OBP Maddux for Izturis? We should have just kept Maddux if that's the best LA had to offer. I'd much rather have the sandwich pick in next year's draft than Cesar Izturis. Cesar Izturis is just more of the same.
  14. Is Fox really a risk to be taken in Rule 5?
  15. We owe the Giants Pierre. Giving them LaTroy wasn't enough for the evil they unleashed on us by forcing Dusty down our throats.
  16. Pretty respectable record considering he was working with a 15m payroll. Who did he just edge out on the voting? Dusty? :D
  17. I'm not sure there is anything that could be flamed in this letter. But, you should have finished it up with something like this: We assure you that these offseason acquisitions along with retaining Wade Miller, Kerry Wood and Aramis Ramirez will assure you retain your job as General Manager of the Cubs for many years to come. Thanks from all us at NSBB.com
  18. Only Jim Hendry, with wheelbarrows full of money, would talk to the agent for Juan Pierre rather than the agent for JD Drew. [-( Hey Jim. We tried that. It failed miserably. Let someone else try it now.
  19. Sure hope the uniform number 43 is available for Pierre. It would be a thing of beauty.
  20. This trade opens up the door to move Linebrink to Atlanta for Giles. Just wish San Diego had something decent to offer up for Jacque Jones. They need a LF and he's a San Diego native. They don't have much to offer, however. If only they didn't already trade Kottaras.
  21. Scouting directors don't think about cost efficiency. They are excited if they find an unknown nobody who winds up having one decent season in the majors. yes, people on internet message boards are much better sources for determining the quality of a signing It's about time you figured that out. :D
  22. I wouldn't label it that bad. Boston did expose Manny to irrevocable waivers only about a year ago. That deal actually happened and Boston would have gotten nothing back for Manny. I doubt Manny is going anywhere.
  23. I have zero issues with getting Lugo. He's WAY better than Izturis. I also don't have an issue with Hendry playing it up as though Izturis wouldn't be supplanted by Lugo if it would help keep his trade value from plummeting. Let's just cross our fingers that Hendry is only playing up Izturis rather than actually pining for his defensive skills. At the same time, I want Lugo at SS or 2b, NOT CF. There are too many other options to actually play CF to fill it with Lugo.
  24. If it's any consolation, at age 26, Meche was most similarly compared to Jason Schmidt. He was 3rd in the AL in 2006 in walks issued. Not exactly something I'm real thrilled about. But, I think he still has room to improve. Can he do that under Rothschild?
