  1. I forget who it was, but it was some us soccer twitter account who tweeted the total transfer value of the starting lineup, and the average value for each player and the only reason they were close is because of Pulisic and to a lesser extent, McKennie, who inflated the US lineup's value to be almost equal. They were the two highest value players on the field and he tweeted something like, "in order to win, they're going to have to be the two best players on the pitch." CP was the best player in the game but McKennie was too lax on his touches and not sharp. I did love his fire and physicality though. It's all there if he puts it together. And btw, in addition to missing high xG opportunities, Tyler Adams completely changes the game. I mean, he does whenever he plays for club or country, but specifically that game. I'm a long-time Michael Bradley defender, and I still think he's got a little left in the tank to offer this team, but the space his lack of pace leaves open in the middle of the field just isn't there when Adams is there snatching souls. Yes, Mexico was missing key players too, but none as good or impactful as Tyler Adams, who on his best days is the best player in the entire region imo.
  2. That's very cool!
  3. Morris seems to at least make the runs that Pulisic wants, probably a result from playing with Nico Lodeiro in Seattle. Boyd hogs the ball and checks back to the middle too much to have great chemistry with CP. Overall there were signs of progress and life but ultimately we're still a tick below Mexico in ability and didn't get the right bounces we'd need to beat them. A game changing striker could open everything up, I just don't know who that is at this point. Altidore is still the best we've got and it isn't all that close. We'll see where Lille deploys Weah and if Sargent can take a leap.
  4. Sounds like Tyler Boyd is going to sign with Inter Miami, which I don't love. That club seems like a bit of a mess and he had some great step up options in Europe.
  5. Any time Brian Phillips writes about soccer, it's a must read. https://www.theringer.com/soccer/2019/5/8/18536379/liverpool-barcelona-champions-league-man-city-premier-league
  6. What's up with not liking Kane? He seems like a loaf of white bread that scores goals. Totally inoffensive, but maybe I missed something.
  7. I jinxed them. What a brutal turn for Ajax fans. Come that close and know that many of these players aren't going to be around next year.
  8. I'm legitimately psyched about this old school, heritage European Cup matchup. As a fan with zero European club affiliations, this year's tournament has been excellent. Fun. Dramatic. No Ronaldo in the final. Nothing against Spurs, but I don't need an all english final in my life. Ajax is going to be able to sell this squad for the GDP of Holland.
  9. the favorite won The couple sites I was able to find pre-first leg odds had Barcelona at -135 to -145 to advance. 538 had it as pretty much 50/50 before the tie. I'm certainly not talking about betting odds. I'm talking about the teams we have to see every. goddam. year.
  10. Holy bleep! The Champions League: Way better when the favorites lose. Going to a final on a trick play is incredible.
  11. Fix Chicago and Boston and MLS would be better off than anything that expansion could bring them.
  12. Re: The MNT, it's worth keeping in mind that was the first game with close to an A squad, and Berhalter is doing a lot of very progressive/experimental stuff tactically. It's not all going to work, especially without a longer camp in the lead up. The Gold Cup this summer is going to be very interesting and the first chance they have to put it all together. Hard to be negative about starting out with three wins and three clean sheets.
  13. Lots of good things going on for Americans. Tyler Adams is dominating bundesliga midfields, pulisic is undeniable at the moment, and Jordan Morris comes back from injury and looks like the player we hoped he could become.
  14. It wasn't widely publicized, so I don't know if you guys saw this, but the Confed Cup is dead, which makes the Gold Cup fairly pointless again, and prevents the US/Mexico from getting a big tourney rep before the World Cup. So since the Copa Centenario made a bajillion dollars, we're going to make it a regular thing. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/26/sports/us-soccer-copa-america-conmebol.html Concurrent with the Euros? Hell yeah. Shoot that horsefeathers directly into my eyeballs.
  15. He's got some bust potential. Honestly, I believe fairly strongly that Tyler Adams is our best bet for consistently elite at his position in the player pool, including Pulisic & Sargent.
  16. As champs, they are probably going to take a "it ain't broke" approach, but I would really, really prefer that Atlanta gives Andrew Carleton more run this year. [tweet] [/tweet] Good god.
  17. 25th highest transfer fee in history. Wild. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_association_football_transfers
  18. Looks like I like Chelsea again: https://www.fearthewall.com/2018/12/28/18159607/borussia-dortmund-transfer-news-rumors-christian-pulisic-chelsea-summer-premier-league-bvb
  19. Hopefully we get to see Ebobisse play major minutes.
  20. Sulley was right about socialism. He's probably right about this. Future discoveries will vindicate this take.
  21. Josh Sargent scores on his debut.
  22. Looks like Bayern is making the Chris Richards loan permanent for $1.25 mil. They are diving into their partnership with FC Dallas in a huge way.
  23. I agree. I think it works out fine. MLS offseason has started for him and training camp is back in late February, so if he is City's back up for the back half of the season and gets some time in the league and/or FA cup, plays the Gold Cup over the summer and then gets a loan somewhere in Europe where he's the #1 for next season, he wouldn't lose much playing time. He would basically be trading a half season as City back up for a half season of Columbus' #1. That's a great scenario as long as he gets a loan and establishes himself somewhere as the regular #1.
  24. Ditto. I'm maybe most excited that soccer twitter can take a momentary pause from shrieking about every coach that didn't get interviewed, on the grounds that they know they're a good candidate without having interviewed them. The Lopetegui one is particularly annoying. Tata Martino I get. He's here, he has a fairly strong grasp of the pool and the I'm sure the vagaries of the US Soccer set up, he has coached at the highest level successfully for club and country, but Lopetegui would be an awful, awful hire. When I saw people bitching about that I was ready for Berhalter so we could just get going.
