  1. What I'm most surprised about is how Benny has supplanted JFT and more interestingly, Holden as the first offensive mid off the bench. For me coming into the tournament, it was Holden. I wonder why Bob picks Benny. Experience? Quick to pick up the pace? Better long range passing?
  2. Bob's going to get the call to Europe and I'm almost as excited about that as I am about any player getting transferred. Let's talk about Benny Feilhaber. Benny has been the first midfielder off the bench for the last two games and he's been very good in both. It's the same role he played in the good run last summer. It's pretty evident that he's not a 90 minute regular starter, but what's his deal? I haven't seen him play a ton of club ball. He just seems like a really smart sub who gets a feel for the game's pace early on. He definitely raises his game on the big stage (BENNY...FEEEEEIIILHAAABER!!! YEEEEEESS!) but he's never really done anything eye catching at club level that I've been aware of.
  3. Top 50: good chance Top 30: only if ESPN makes the list. I'd say between 40 and 50 Form varies so much from week to week, but on balance I'd be on board with this. Thing about Landon is he's a complimentary player. He gets better and more valuable based on the quality of players he plays with because of his instincts, intelligence, vision, hard work and technique. He is not a Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi who can impose his will on a game every week.
  4. Grant Wahl If form holds, I look forward to Kyle's my bad regarding the unimportance of the tie vs England. A potential matchup v Uruguay or South Korea to get to the semi's? Yes please.
  5. I have some really bad heartburn right now and feel a little light headed. I'll be okay now. THERE'S ONLY ONE LANDON DONOVAN! THERE'S ONLY ONE LANDON DONOVAN! THERE'S ONLY ONE LANDON DONNNNNNOVAN, THERE'S ONLY ONE LANDON DONOVAAAN!
  6. Freddy Adu is out at Aris. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/adu-exit-greek-club-aris-likely Have fun in MLS.
  7. My golden boot bets. http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm16/dhohulin/2010-06-2112h54_52.jpg
  8. It's getting a little dusty in my cubicle.
  9. Michael Bradley is going to get linked to some huge clubs after this tournament. He's been our player of the tournament.
  10. A mother [expletive] disgrace.
  11. Blanco 5th oldest scorer in World Cup history, lol. My Mexico and Argentina love is looking good so far. Not that it's realistic, but if the Galaxy have to replace Landon, Gio would put butts in seats.
  12. I share a work area with a dude who lived like two blocks from the Bernabeu when he was a kid so we were watching the game on espn3. He checked in on Marca with like 30 minutes to go and it was already going nuts.
  13. Can we PLEASE stop filling this thread with why soccer sucks, why it's not huge in America or anything like this? Post about it in the soccer thread.
  14. They also have a Dempseyesque wild card in Koren. He's not as good, but he is capable of that same kind of unexpected play from nowhere which jives well with their style of lulling their opponent to the pace they prefer.
  15. i wasn't attemtping to hate on soccer. i still enjoy it every 4 years, i just suggested that they should have power plays to increase scoring chances from time to time. It's the world's most popular game, it generates billions and it's been played for hundreds of years. They've got a pretty good handle on what works and what doesn't. The people who check in for a few hours every four years who seem to think this is some cute, poorly organized game that needs improvement are annoying. Not all of us. Brazil are primarily a counter attacking team. As are many in this tournament, which is a huge reason scoring is down. North Korea's 11 men behind the ball bunker actually does not cater to Brazil's strengths. I know you were joking and I wouldn't be surprised if Brazil wang whips them for 90 minutes straight and puts up 8, but I don't really see a ton of goals. 3-0 at most.
  16. wait til brazil beats north korea 8-0 Brazil are primarily a counter attacking team.
  17. Findley playing is our equivalent of Heskey playing. Heskey plays because it opens up space for Rooney and Findley plays because it opens up space for Landon. Simple as that. A draw would have been nice today because Slovenia are not only going to bunker and counter, but that's when they are at their best. I think we can score goals on them though. I didn't see anything today that made me expect anything less than a win. Btw - According to Steve Goff, Howard is undergoing tests but not x-rays. So nothing is broken. He'll be good to go by Friday, I'm sure.
  18. ESPN is doing a helluva job covering the World Cup, but I do have one concern. I think they need to change their font in graphics. http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/11/2010/06/500x_custom_1276380860873_photo.jpg
  19. Lampard/Gerrard partnership is easy. They are world class. Carrick isn't. They needed to be out there. I also think the Milner thing was because of the amount of attention and respect they've given to Landon Donovan. Milner is their best defensive left winger and they were VERY focused on stopping Landon. And you know what? If you think about it, he was dead on. They stopped Landon and they should have beaten us 1-0. Barring the howler, they did. All of a sudden, Capello looks like he made the right call.
  20. Spain and Brazil.

  22. Yes. You gave me the red ass because I'm buzzed and excited and was surprised to see anything worth arguing over. As long as you are fighting the good fight of supporting US Soccer, I have no real problem with you.
  23. The fact that you don't understand fundamental differences between sports and what is quantifiable, what isn't and how that is different in soccer just further shows your lack of understanding of what's going on here. I don't begrudge you the right to only pay attention to a sport when it matters, but it's pretty typical you to come in and act like an expert with no reason to do so. I don't wear the fact that I spend a ton of time watching and following soccer as some sort of badge of honor or to establish my territorial bona fides. I bring it up because it's pretty obvious that if one intelligent sports fan spends a lot more time evaluating a sport than another intelligent sports fan, he's going to understand it better.
  24. Sure. But 9 times out of 10, it won't be the difference, so I guess we can sit here and squabble about whether it's "significant" or not. But the result of the next game will have several times the impact that this draw did, no matter the result. I agree that the Slovenia game has always been the most significant, but this tie could have a huge impact in the knockout round. If Slovenia or Algeria can tie England and we win the next two winnable games, the difference in ease of advancing to the final 8 is much different vs Germany or Serbia. Serbia are talented but much more beatable that Germany.
