  1. I can't see any way they don't get a deal done. Iwakuma isn't Daisuke by a long shot and one would think that a team with a limited payroll like the A's didn't put up the money to win the bidding for him AND trade away cheap, young rotation filler for DeJesus just to lose Iwakuma.
  2. At the age of 75. Hall of Fame broadcaster, with the team since their inception in 1977. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-obit-niehaus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOWnLqjF40g
  3. This was almost the exact reasoning behind their bidding on (and winning) the rights to Iwakuma, if I'm not mistaken: so that they could trade one of their vaunted young arms for a bat.
  4. Bears wearing their throwback jerseys again for this game.
  5. This group is people who's most significant impact was 1973--present. That's too recent for Santo to be included. To add to this, the Veteran's Committee now votes on a three-year cycle. This year is 1973-onward; next year will be 1947-1972 ("the golden era"; I don't name these things, honest); 2012 will be pre-integration, 1871-1946. So Santo's next chance to get jobbed by the committee will be next year. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-halloffame-veteranscommittee

  7. Just as weird as calling it "the program". Hope Quade doesn't commit any recruiting violations.
  8. Prior to this, I could have seen the Rangers really taking off, as many others have said. New and ostensibly better ownership, a huge TV contract, an influx of new fans drawn in by the postseason run, and they've always been in a pretty decent-sized market. Now I could just as easily see them being like the Arizona Cardinals - from obscurity to the losing end of a title and back again. So the question is, where does Texas go from here?
  9. http://bit.ly/dtWq2Z What a game. 8-)
  10. Mostly, yeah. During the game, it's an extra set of eyes in the dugout, another guy who has full knowledge of the scouting reports and your own players, who can watch the game and say to the manager "this guy's slow to the plate, we should send the runner" or "this guy's a dead pull hitter, we might want to shift the center fielder more towards left center" and stuff like that, a guy off whom the manager can bounce ideas like "what are your thoughts on a double steal here?" or "what do you think about pinch hitting this guy for that guy?", that sort of thing. Off the field, as you said, the bench coach will usually be responsible for some facet of instruction: on Lou's full staff, Sinatro was responsible for instructing the catchers, Trammell for working with the infielders and Quade for working with the outfielders. Those three - infield, outfield, catching - will usually be split somewhere among the bench and two base coaches. The bench coach is also responsible for coordinating daily practices, stretching and drills, both in the spring and during the regular season.
  11. Levine reporting that Ryno will not be considered for the bench coach vacancy. Take that however you will.
  12. Also his wife looks kinda like Megan Fox minus the crazy.
  13. Kopecky out with a "short term upper-body injury", Evan Brophey (no. 47) recalled from Rockford. Crawford in goal tonight.
  14. Let them. Cliff Lee is the only free agent worth anything this offseason.
  15. Yankees fans worldwide searching dictionaries for new epithets to hurl in the direction of Rangers, their fans, their ballpark, Nolan Ryan, the state of Texas and everything else they see. Your boisterous tears are a river of smug satisfaction to the rest of the world, you loudmouth [expletive]s.
  16. Two games for Hjalmarsson.
  17. Late 2004, the Cubs were on the wrong end of a game that got out of hand late. Remlinger seemingly hit Berkman in the head with a pitch and Berkman was on the ground for a while; the replays showed it hit Berkman's bat and Lance was doing a world-class acting job. pretending like his brains were spilling out his helmet and his world was collapsing while he was down. Mike was less than pleased and had a few choice words for Berkman. Keep in mind that this was while Remlinger's daughter was recovering from being hit by a car. http://www.cantstopthebleeding.com/C1882343933/E133290754/index.html
  18. Okay, four words. Add "lightning" in there.
  19. I believe you are in erra in saying this.
  20. Sorry Braves fans, but if your anguish means Dick Stockton will not call another game in the 2010 playoffs, we must place the needs of the many over the needs of the few.
  21. Three words for you, Fat Elvis: Twinkie Mike Remlinger
  22. Sharp out tonight with "undisclosed injury", Brandon Pirri recalled from Rockford to take his place. http://www.csnchicago.com/10/09/10/Sharp-to-miss-opener-Blackhawks-call-up-/landing.html?blockID=328101&feedID=661
  23. Any team still giving David Eckstein the starter's share of plate appearances deserves nothing less than what they get. The fact that they have seven players with over 200 PAs and an OPS under .700 but they're still in playoff contention after leading their division most of the season also makes me happy that the Cubs all but derailed their playoff hopes.
  24. I see Melvin's name and I can think of nothing but that astronomically-overachieving Arizona team he managed in 2007. Makes my stomach turn. As for Wakamatsu, Managing historically bad Seattle teams isn't going to pad anyone's resume. I would think he's due another chance somewhere else, but I agree that I don't want him managing the Cubs.
