  1. If it's true he's staying in SD, it may be just as well. Giles could have signed with STL before even considering the Cubs. With Sanders ($4M) and Walker ($6M) both free agents, and Roger Cedeno off the books ($1.5M), STL could have easily paid Giles $10-12M per year. That type of dough and the chance to win year-in/year-out is hard to pass up. Let's see if we get confirmation reports in the next 12 hours about re-signing with SD. That's about the most positive spin to put on it. Thankfully's he not going to St. Louis. The Cards would have had to add about 10M or so to their payroll to snag Giles. Even with that money coming off, it is nearly equal to the amount of money they have to pay inhouse for raises. Plus the have the matty mo decision to make. Also if Im not mistaken they need to get two corner outfielders with whatever money they have.
  2. If theres a GM position in baseball that I would want it would be for the Milwaukee Brewers. They have great position prospects stuck behind very good cheap major league players. Which means lots of fun trading. They have a little bit more money to work with but like I said, I dont think spending an extra 5M on a vet is going to make or break this team. Now using that to sign 5 substantially talented draft picks is going to have a significant impact on the team in the future. Plus theres not a lot of pressure. Sure the DRays have lots of good talent but I'll take any team not in the same division as the bosox and yanks. The brewers are the new indians, only even better. They should be smart and be able to churn their young studs the year before FA to continune to replenish their org.
  3. Yay, I bought stuff!!!
  4. I know sox fans that were very veyr pissed at the sox for doing this. Brokers can buy season tickets, get the series tickets and sell them for almost as much as the entire package costs and take more tickets off the market for next year (not like it matters).
  5. The feeling I got was that Girardi was going to wait for the Cubs to open up, but seeing as he is gonna take the Marlins, he feels the job in Chicago won't be opening up soon. :x As I've said before I've heard from people close to Girardi that he and the cubs parted ways about as far from amicably as possible. From my understanding there was no way he wanted to come here.
  6. I am not convinced that Wood will comeback 100% healthy and be able to contribute a full season, nor do I think anyone else can be certain. I'd like to think so, and I hope so, and I think theres a good chance, but this team cannot win with Williams, Maddux, and Guzman/Mitre in the rotation. I'd rather go the safe route and pick up another sure thing starter. Lowe is a good bet to do well in Wrigley with his extreme sinker. I like Nomar and I think his defensive deficiencies are overrated, so I'd be just fine with him at short, however I wouldnt mind giving Cedeno the job and using that money to make sure we sign Giles. However, I think if LA is taking money off their books its for the very specific reason of signing Giles themselves.
  7. That is the most ridiculous trade proposal I think you've ever made. Why would the Red Sox give up on their most promising young pitcher, an OBP Machine who will probably take over at third next season, AND Hanley Ramirez for two guys who are overrated? Overbay is overrated? The guy is an OBP machine too, and a great defensive 1B. Clark may fall of this year's numbers, but he's not a terrible(especially considering cost) replacement to Damon. I didn't think the proposal was that out of hand at all. However, Boston has put a lot of money into "the greek god of walks", he can put up Overbay numbers now and has a much higher ceiling, AND is 2 years further away from free agency. I dont think the Bosox would value Clark a ton as he really hasnt shown anything until recently. A straight up youkilis for overbay trade is somewhat reasonable, but highly unlikely, however throwing in ramirez and papelbon brings it to the ridiculous level. I would not consider Overbay overrated at all though, I like him, hes a fine player.
  8. Even though the bosox have jerked him around Boston isnt stupid enough to trade Youkilis for Overbay and Clark straight up, let alone throw Papelbon and Ramirez in.
  9. If Im the Brewers FO, I continue with the youth movement. I trade Overbay, Clark, and Hall for some one season/half season proven young cheap starter (think Chacin/Santana) and/or try to get multiple nearly there starters. Invest any money the owners want to spend on signing some big time talent in the draft, NOT free agency. Try to get some college pitchers that might make it to the majors when their core position players will still be arbi eligible. Depending on talent I focus mostly on pitching this draft and then start phasing in more high level position players over the years. I think their track record has shown that they are successful at it, and it can really pay dividends. Down the line they are going to need to replace their talent when they because free agents/when they trade them away the year before their free agency to replenish the org with top prospects from foolish teams who will overpay.
  10. The cubs spent just as much money in 2005 as the world champions in 2002 and 2003 spent combined.
  11. This is true, I dont know how he could be a class A FA.
  12. Is anyone else hearing this rumour: Jim Thome and David Bell to Seattle for Adrian Beltre? Oh, that's why the Mariners are terrible. Why would they consider that? They lose a guaranteed year off a terrible contract, but in the long run they save nothing. Beltre for his down year is still extremely talented, and what, 10 years younger than Thome? Plus they're paying Richie Sexson 8 figures to be a 1B/DH/LF. I don't get why they'd consider that deal. If that happens then I'd give Bavasi a call, Ibanez wouldnt be a horrible option, should we lose the Giles sweepstakes. EDIT: I dont know if they have anyone coming up, but I guess they'd most likely keep Ibanez and use him in LF.
  13. I don't recall ever hearing Cubs officials reference the other team's failure as a means of soothing fans' frustration. They haven't. But I think there is that feeling about the Chicago teams in the press and in TV coverage. "The two Chicago teams have the longest stretch without titles." Well if the Sox win, the focus of the "longest drout" talk will all be on the Cubs. Of course, the Trib is ambivalent about this at best. The press rarely acknowledged the fact that the sox had almost as long of streak as the cubs up until very recently. It was always all about the cubs streak.
  14. I'm for signing Lofton, only if we don't sign Furcal. If we get Furcal, I'd rather have Preston Wilson out there than Lofton, and I have little love Preston Wilson. My ideal scenario is to re-sign Nomar, sign Giles, and then sign Lofton for CF. If we sign Furcal, I'd still hope to sign Giles, but I'd prefer someone like Preston Wilson in CF or just keep Patterson around. Im for Milton Bradley, other than that I guess Id take a flyer on lofton and if he regresses as his BA/BIP shows then I'll give the job to JHJR.
  15. Thats a good point, I'd have to think Seanez would be a type A, making it 4. Does resigning your own players in the exclusive period count to that total...i.e. resigning nomar and not picking up furcal? Nope. I'm pretty sure re-signing your own players doesn't count against your total. But if Nomar were to re-sign before declaring, it definitely wouldn't count. Ok, then everything rotoauthority said except Nomar instead of Furcal, I like it.
  16. If the Cell doesn't draw after a WS, their fanbase is hopeless when it comes to attendance. There were still tickets available at the box office the day of for the first playoff series. And looking at the attendance records they only hit their SRO mark of 41,000 once so far in the playoffs. I went to about 25 games this year, many of them important games and the attendance was always insanely poor.
  17. Thats a good point, I'd have to think Seanez would be a type A, making it 4. Does resigning your own players in the exclusive period count to that total...i.e. resigning nomar and not picking up furcal?
  18. If you gave me a choice of no one or furcal, I'd take no one... and bring back nomar.
  19. All of Walker's money and then some will go to raises. I think the cards and the astros cant get anywhere close to competing financially with the other contenders. The dodgers are about 5M cheaper next year but they will need that money to resign/replace Weaver so that puts them at about a 5M increase. If they are staying pat salarywise they arent going to be able to make a realistic offer. I really think Anaheim might be the best bed. Arte Moreno has an open checkbook and a WS contending team should not have Jeff DaVannon and Juan Rivera DHing. DH Garret Anderson to keep him healthy and stick Giles in left. If (and thats a big if) boston trades Manny then they become the front runner.
  20. Unless Atlanta shuffles payroll, there's no way that happens, unless Brian plays for 5-6 million a year which will not happen. Even if he takes 5-6M that means by by Furcal, which it doesnt appear they want to do.
  21. I'll take that bet!!! Ohh and Giles will be 35 next year, not 32.
  22. The whole point here isnt that Damon is a bad player, just like with Furcal he is a fine player but nothing great, and nothing that will live up close to the contract he will get this offseason. By bust people dont mean hes going to hit 200, they mean hes not going to produce like a 10M player is expected to produce.
  23. If that's the case, then we need to trade him to the ChiSox pronto for their minor league version of Carlos Lee. Brian Anderson please...and that trade worked out well for both teams.
  24. If we were to get Giles, what would the Braves want back? Would they want Walker? Would they rather go cheap with Marte and Betemit and second and third? If they dont want Walker then we need to flip him to a team who needs a second baseman either for something to go to the braves or for bullpen help. Teams that need second basemen: Twins (is the FO different from the guys who ruined Walker's career from giving him the unfair defensively incompetent stigma) Mets I cant really think of anyone else. And I guess the Dodgers if they move Kent to first.
  25. I dont want to wade through the pages, but some one tell me what the yanks are going to do at third?
