Here's the full story: http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1118/1462593.html Considering the Braves will get insurance $ for because of Hampton's injury I think they did alright. Thanks CFICT! Do the Braves get reimbursed the whole salary? Also, is Hampton done for his career? I've ready anywhere of 66% to 80%. He's out until 07 with Tommy John surgery. I guess this wasn't a good deal for the braves after all. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2167545 Have you heard those percentages specifically on the Hampton contract? I've heard that insurance agencies won't insure pitcher's contracts for more than 3 or 4 years, because of the unpredictability of their chance to get hurt with the strain on their arm. I highly doubt any agency is insuring Hampton's contract at this point, and if they are, the premiums are likely ridiculously high (as in over the 1M range). I don't think we know for sure, but the fact that the Braves are worried about money is a pretty good indicator that very little, if any of Hampton's contract will be reimbursed by insurance. Yes, in fact it's contracts like Hampton's that made insurance companies decide to stop giving out so many years. Great observation though! So you have heard those quotes specifically for Hamptons contract? I heard the 3-4 year limit in about 2002, so about 2 years after Hampton signed his contract and well before his injury. I work with insurance agencies and if theres one thing they know how to do its manage risk, I just dont see anyone underwriting a policy on that contract that pays any significant amount of money without insane premiums. And again if they were collecting anything significantly they wouldnt have a problem resigning Furcal without doing anything else.

Sorry BD. I have no relevant information about the Cubs interest in Brian Giles. That's not to say he isn't on the radar, but rather, I don't know if he is or isn't. All I can say is that I have verified through my sources that Jim Hendry is aware that Giles is a free agent. As for my personal opinion, I'm 90% confident the Cubs have more money available to spend this offseason than any other NL team. I base that comment by taking the 2005 payroll for each club and subtracting off 2006 guaranteed contracts. That puts the Cubs at about $43-44M. The Mets have about $39-40M. The Cards, Padres and Braves have about $29-32M. So, if Giles is looking for the most money, the Cubs and Mets can offer him the most money. But, if he's looking to win consistently, the Cards and Braves do have enough money to make it happen. It would be terrible if he went to St. Louis. He could end up in Atlanta if he provides a bit of discount to play with his brother. SD can afford him too. But unlike St. Louis, who has the majority of their guaranteed contracts in guys like Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen, Mulder and Isringhausen, or Atlanta, who has Jones, Jones, Smoltz and Hudson, the Padres have their guaranteed contracts in Chan Ho Park and Ryan Klesko. Assuming Giles does not want to play in the NY spotlight, does not plan to give his hometown Padres a discount, and prefers to play for a consistent playoff team, I see Atlanta 1, St. Louis 2 and the Cubs 3 in the Giles sweepstakes. Hoops Ugh, I just did the braves salary and lost it, but trust me, fill out their roster and without signing furcal, or anyone other than the arbi and prearbi players they can fill out their roster in house for 80-82M (based on a few difficult arbi estimates. Their current salary is 85M, Hoops, I have no clue where you got your number. The card are a little more difficult since most likely they will get some extra cash to play around with due to the stadium, but basically without Walker and Sanders, they come out around flat compared to last year because of built in raises. If some one really wants me to go through and fill out the salaries again I will.

It'll take much more than a tweak. The problems that have plagued this team, have plagued them for years and are not being exaggerated. The Cubs were 9th in runs scored this year. They were that low because of low OBP, and the low OBP was because they took few walks. It would take 1 or 2 bats to turn things around if those 1 or 2 were big impacts like Giles. But things will not be fixed with Furcal and a mediocre RF. They need impact out there. No matter what you do with the pitching staff, there's no way to guarantee a top 1 or 2 staff, with the fragile nature of that aspect of the game. You can't put all your emphasis on pitching and just think this offense will get fixed with tweaks. They've been tweaking it for 3 years and it just keeps getting worse. They were 23 runs out of 6th and 36 out of 5th. Replace Neifi/Patterson @ the top of the order w/ Furcal and replace Floyd w/ Burnitz, and they should be able to get into the top 6. Get some hits w/ runners on base for a change and they can be top 5. Weren't they near the bottom in hitting w/ RISP?? Burnitz needs to go!! If you call those two moves "tweaks" then no offense, but you are on crack. Actually saying somebody might be on crack is offensive IMO. Frankly if you consider signing a top 5 FA and trading for 6M player who just put up 275/35/100 "tweaks" then you can't be sober.

I'd trade Hill before others figure out he has only one ML quality pitch, even as good as it is. With his major problem being HR allowed, perhaps he would be better suited to Dodger Stadium. He has a low 90's fastball to go with that curve. I'm not opposed to trading Hill, but he wouldn't be the first chip I'd offer up. A very straight and hittable low 90's fastball. And I wouldn't throw him away, but I wouldn't hesitate for a nanosecond to trade him for any significant offensive help. The key word there being "significant." I would definitely include Hill in a deal for the right player. By right player, I mean Wilkerson, Dunn, Manny, Marcus Giles, or players of that caliber. I'm not sure I'd be eager to include Hill in a deal for Jose Guillen, Raul Ibanez, Cliff Floyd, or players in that tier. A lot depends on what I'm getting. I'd trade him for Milton Bradley. If the Dodgers are looking to move Bradley, I don't think it's necessary to trade Hill to get him. If it was Hill for Bradley straight-up, I might look to do that. I seriously doubt I'd offer Hill + something to get Bradley, unless that "something" was stuff I didn't want. Remember when Bruce told us Hendry said he wouldn't do Hill for Dunn straight up? Yeah that was the saddest day ever...something tells me Hill for Bradley isnt gonna happen.

Plus Pierre has a ring, hes a champion, thats the type of guy I want on my team. -
Sure he won a series, but with a massive payroll, and he has only been a GM for 3 years. You can't even say he has a track record. You can't justify paying him as much as guy like Shuerholz, who had put together 14 consecutive division winners. It's not like he is a super genius. He let both Lowe and Martinez walk this year and did little to improve the bullpen when it was obvious it was pretty bad, and that is why they went out of the playoffs like lambs. I give him credit for Ortiz, Schilling, Millar and Foulke, but I think a lot of guys could have put together a winner with 140 million dollars. He is a good GM, but not elite just yet. What do you hire a GM to do? Win the World Series. Maybe more than once if he can. He did it. He went out and got the players that would win a World Series and they did it. They did it going head to head against a 200m payroll team. If Schilling was healthy all year this year, they might have done it again this year. If the GM who puts together a 140m team can't be afforded 1.5m or whatever it is he actually wants, I don't know what to say. Without him, they may have been sitting at home in October last year. There have been a few average-poor GM's who have won titles. Kenny Williams is a prime example. Should he get top dollar? It's not the amount alone that bothers me, but the amount relative to other general mangers who are better. Sustained success is more indicative of a good GM than one WS title. I just can't see how you can pay a guy with only 3 years experience mor ehtan a guy like Schuerholz, who has overseen the management of 14 consecutive division titles, 3 pennants and a Championship. Epstein is a neophyte GM, and you can't just pay him more money than guys who have done far more than he has, and done it for longer. Giving Epstein top dollar would be like making Miguel Cabrera the biggest contract in the game right now. Yes he has been impressive, but it been over too short a period to anoint him elite. Let him win a few more division titles and pennants. Bad analogy...Epstein will be a FA in a week, Cabrera is under the Marlins control for many more years.

Cautiously I'll take the over  Thanks for providing a laugh on this miserable day. My laughs are coming from the local news showing the 50 or so people outside celebrating the WS win, if the Sox think this is turning the city into a Sox town they have another thing coming. Well Jabroni since you signed offline so quickly, I'll post my reply here as you are sure to be checking "Jesus Jabroni, when the White Sox win the world series the first thing you do is check nsbb!!!!" I really meant that post more of an observation than a knock of the sox. IMO its really really sad

Right? I'm looking forward to my fiancee yelling at me for spending too much time on here! But whatever. This wedding will plan itself, or, failing that, will have to wait! Just tell her the wedding doesnt take place until the sign reads AC 000000 -

If you don't want to say, I completely understand, but... out of curiosity, how much do you receive from them per sale? Or is it per site view? No, I don't get paid by those guys on a per view basis. At this point it is just when something is purchased through them. I'm not sure how much nilodnayr spent, but I made $0.80 on that commission. I think it's an 10% deal, IIRC. I bought 40 bucks worth of stuff, im no actuary but that works out to 2% -

Depends on how their OF situation shakes out in the offseason. They don't have much in the way of good options in terms of CF options plus they have their share of contracts to unload. They have Michaels, Lofton(FA), and someone who I believe won a AAA MVP(the name escapes me, hispanic name). If anything I'd say they have a wealth of options at CF. Victorino -

Why don't we ask the Mets to give us Cameron ($6M), Floyd ($6.5M) and Glavine ($9.5M) in a pure salary dump move for some prospects? With the $22M they save here, and the $15M freed up with Piazza as free agent, the Mets can trade for Mannys' $20M and Delgado's $16M. We fill the needs for CF, RF and a >200IP/<4.00ERA SP. And, all 3 guys we get are free agents after 2006. That's a good thought. Only trouble is that, unless CPatt were out of the picture, would it give Dusty an excuse to bench Murton? Put Patterson in the deal to the Mets. The Mets can then deal Beltran to Boston for Manny, and Kris Benson to Miami for Delgado. I think we've gone just a bit too far here. I always thought that if the mets were to get manny theyd have to give up camron and Milledge, so thats the first problem. Unless of course we think Theo is stupid enough to throw 5/50 at Caveman, I dont. Whats the point in the mets getting manny if they are going to get rid of beltran? What are they going to do in centerfield? It all seems like way too many trades for the sake of trading that doesnt have a clear strategy and doesnt get any team anywhere (except obviously the cubs). I think theres a real possibility of a blockbuster mets/boston deal, but its not going to include a third team. Plus this whole trade is based on the mets clearing salary. They have not been a team that has cared about fiscal responsibility, and have shown no desire to clear salary. I can see in principle, Cameron and Milledge for Manny. Plain and simple. Now after that I think Floyd can be delt with Victor Diaz taking over the other corner spot, but who knows, they have jerked Diaz around so far.
