  1. I'm not implying that I believe the Cubs are going to oust Dusty Baker at the end of this season. Otherwise, I would have placed this in the transactions forum. However, I'm certain that many of you are more familiar with Jim Leyland's managerial style than I am. What I know is that he got his start coaching in the majors with LaRussa, he too had success with Barry Bonds, and he won it all with a VERY talented Florida Marlins team. Is he the type of manager that would embarrass a player by pulling him from a game if he loafed to first base for instance? Is he the type of manager that proactively mentions fundamentals during the regular season in addition to teaching them during spring training? Thanks for any info you can provide.
  2. Aye...I approve of that roster....And now who can make the numbers add up to 100M or so?.....
  3. Once upon a time there was a diminutive man named Donald. He liked to play baseball. He was mighty fast. One day, while playing baseball, he was spotted by three bears. Cubs, actually. When spring came, the Cubs invited Donald to play with them. Donald agreed, but said he would only do so if the Cubs called him Corey. Everyone was happy. The end. Exactly....but at the very latest that's the June '03 version.
  4. Hawaii beat Florida 10-0 today. Aglipay pitched the complete game shutout. Bichette, Jr. did his part though going 2-2 for the Florida team. It looks like the Hawaiian team will have the next two days off and then play again on Thursday....They'll be playing the second place team in the Pool B which will be the loser of the Lafayette, LA/Vista, CA game....
  5. Hey, so I believe that the Florida team led by Bichette Jr. is playing the Hawaiian team that I've been endorsing right now on ESPN. Can anyone tell me the score of that game? I'd hate to think that I've been talking up this team WHILE they are getting slammed by Florida. Thanks in advance.
  6. I don't think they said he was 6'5 230...but he is 5'5 and 150 or somewhere close to that. The Cali team is a good prediction, but the kid that JoshIQ is alluding to hasn't pitched a full game yet. He has started both games at pitcher for the Hawaii team and pitched the first inning in each striking out 6 for 6. This kid has major gas, and he also hit a homerun yesterday. In fact, this team had back to back HR's yesterday and the kid I've mentioned wasn't even part of the production in that inning. At least three kids hit HR's for the Hawaii team yesterday. Cali vs. Hawaii may be a great matchup. I'm sticking with my prediction though. Hawaii all the way.....no offense to the Lafayette team, Vance. You sure about that? Because they showed a picture of him and then all of a sudden a kid from the Japan team jumps out from behind him. They have a little sign that says the kid from Japan is 4'10. You seriously can't see the kid behind the tall kid from Hawaii. Maybe the guy I'm talking about isn't from Hawaii? trying to look it up now.. Alright..here's what I found. The kid from Hawaii that I'm talking about is Alaka’i Aglipay. Here's the story from yesterday's game: http://www.littleleague.org/series/2005divisions/llbb/gamestories/21sunday/game11/game11.htm Oh, btw...i wasn't able to find height and weight for these players, but I know for certain that Aglipay is close to the dimensions that I posted earlier...so Josh IQ, you must have been talking about someone else. Watch Aglipay though...he's dominant on the mound and at the plate.

  8. Oh, and I'm sure that most of you missed the Hawaii game yesterday b/c they were playing the same time that the Cubs were playing. I'm proud to say that I made the correct decision. ....they said that the Hawaiin "braintrust" has made the decision to start this kid every game and take him off the mound after the first until they meet a formidable opponent. That way, he gets work and stays sharp but keeps his pitching eligibility for the next game.

  10. Alright..I didn't see another thread dedicated to this, and I was suprisingly entertained by baseball again yesterday..although it was a product of 11 and 12 year olds. My pick to win from the US without question is the West Oahu Little League team from Ewa Beach, Hawaii. Has anyone seen this team play?...talk about murderers' row. And this team has at least two pitchers that can heave the ball up there over 70 mph which translates into about the same amount of time a major leaguer has to hit the ball when a pitcher is throwing 95+ mph. Vance, I did see a miraculous comeback yesterday by your beloved Lafayette, LA team. They're 2-0....not too shabby. Is anyone else watching coverage?
  11. ditto..I was two years older than you, but I remember watching that series on WGN. At the time I was oblivious to the tremendous foreshadowing that was involved.
  12. When Patterson actually puts the ball in play - Excluding infield singles, Patterson has a total of about three hits to the opposite field and a tremendous amount of lazy fly outs. Conversely, if he gets the ball in the air to right field...it's usually a frozen rope and goes for a hit. Unfortunately he hits many more ground balls to the right side and they are usually a product of trying to pull a ball on the outside portion of the plate. These translate into easily fielded balls by first and second basemen. Was it Jeff Brantley last night on ESPN that made fun of Dusty Baker for mentioning Corey in the same breath as Lou Brock?
  13. He didn't look very good last night, but I have no problem excusing his performance against a LH like Pettite.
  14. So I'm hoping that Fred isn't getting married today.....Don't take that personally Fred...i wish you all the happiness in the world, but 0-2 is not a good trend to follow
  15. What was the exact description of his injury? My perception was that it was a sprained ankle, but I'm guessing there was some damage done to tendons and/ or ligaments. Can anyone advise what progress he has made thus far? I'm sure they are still trying to strengthen the ankle at this point, but it would be very nice if we were given a bit more info so this wasn't such a guessing game.
  16. Were these firings really catalyzed by the racial remarks or does the Alou family have a mysterious secret power that sends those critical of them straight to the unemployment line? (see Steve Stone last year) :-k Yeah...I guess the racial remarks are what did it this time...Krueger crossed the line.
  17. lol..i was wondering when JC would make an appearance in this thread....I'll wait until I know for certain how hard he's throwing before making an opinion on all of this.
  18. Oh, ok. .250 then. Thanks for that, Fred. Trend analysis definitely dicatates that it's time for him to get super hot again..if only for two weeks. Please...
  19. April - superhot May - hot June - superhot July - hot August - September - October - I'd settle for Lee continuing the trend.
  20. I knew that the name Sisco would find it's way into this thread..
  21. Mr. McGehee, Congrats on your very fine first half of the season. Descbribe what it feels like to know that you are succeeding at the AA level...a level that most believe separates strong prospects from other minor league players. I was in attendance at the Southern League All-Star game, but I haven't been able to catch a replay of that game. What pitch were you thrown that you nailed for a HR?
  22. I've mentioned previously that Jim Hendry graduated from Spring Hill College in Mobile. The morning duo of the radio station for which SpanishFortCub works interviewed Hendry for ten minutes this moring. Unfortunately, I only caught about five minutes of it on my way to work. I'm sure that SpanishFortCub will hear the entire interview today if he hasn't already, and maybe he can comment on anything that I missed. There's nothing shocking, so be forewarned. - Hendry stated that there was no truth to the rumors regarding Dusty Baker departing for LA after this season. In fact, Baker was extremely upset by this story. Both Hendry and Baker contacted Jim Tracy to state this, because they both respect Tracy a great deal. Hendry met with the Dodger's GM over the weekend to discuss a couple of trade ideas, and neither Baker nor Tracey were a topic for discussion this weekend...lol - Hendry is happy that they were able to add Lawton. He feels that he could be a difference maker for the remainder of the season. Many GM's were shying away from the "rental" type deal and that's one of the reasons that there weren't too many other deals made around the league. Gerut will most likely play very well next season after fully recovering from his leg problems, but Lawton should be able to aid more in helping the Cubs get to the playoffs this season. I came in during this discussion, so I'm not certain if Lee Trevanian asked whether there will be a priority to resign Lawton. SpanishFortCub???? - They are tinkering with both Corey Patterson's stance and where he holds his hands. He initially struggled with this, but he's starting to hit the ball more solidly. Hendry didn't put a timetable on his return, but he did state that this won't necessarily iron itself out quickly. I think this somewhat contradicts Bruce Levine's report that Corey would be back with 7-10 days. If Corey continues to hit for the next week and a half then, he'll probably be back with the big club. I got the feeling from Hendry's tone this morning that they wouldn't be bringing him up if he's struggling though...not suprising. -Hendry stated that he'd be back on WNSP in 2-3 weeks once we have a good idea as to what the remainder of this season holds for Cubdom.
  23. Unfortunately, I was only able to attend one game in which Sandberg played. It was in 1992 against the New York Mets. Greg Maddux pitched a complete game four hitter, allowed one run, and struck out 10. Dawson homered and Derrick May had three hits. Sandberg didn't do anything spectacular in this game, but he was absolutely my favorite player at the time. I have quite a few pictures of that game somewhere. We sat on the first base side fairly close to the field so we were pretty close to Grace and Ryno. The Cubs won the game, and Maddux went on to win the Cy Young, and then subsequently leave for ATL. Ryno managed to only go 1-4, but he hit a double...didn't score. Still it was the only time I saw my favorite baseball player as a kid play in person. It's a lasting memory.
  24. k..few more minutes and they'll be up
