  1. No. They will go to the last minute on this. Why would they announce this now? It's probably that Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn is staying and not going to St. Louis. That's what Bruce Levine reported today anyway.
  2. I'm told they "still have some work to do" on that. I don't know why. I don't understand how the team can pay Dempster and Wade Miller to rehab when they had about 1/200 of the upside that Prior has. It could be that they're trying to negotiate a sub-mandatory offer with Mark. What they could do is agree to non-tender him and then sign him as a free agent the day after the non-tender deadline. This is exactly when they did with Barrett in December of 2003 after they traded for him.

  4. Your intrepid Cubs beat writer has "blogged in": http://www.beepcentral.com/blogs/bindex.aspx?ubid=3103&blog=3990
  5. Thanks for the link. I had a great deal of fun working on the book with Pat. If you buy it, I hope you enjoy.
  6. I read that earlier today. Is that your opinion, or is that from Hendry's mouth? Because it reads like you're speculating that they wont pick it up. It's based on very good sourcing with the Cubs. I talk to them every day.
  7. Cubs are NOT picking up Trachsel's option. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=55472 Item is at the bottom of today's column.
  8. what if you worked with marriotti? No hypotheticals, please. :clown:
  9. You might see more of their action coming via trades. Just a guess at this early date. I don't see them paying $30 million a year for A-Rod. The protracted sale of the team probably will factor into things, but McDonough has given me every indication the team will be able to upgrade. Remember, people thought the Zambrano deal was dead, and it got done.
  10. Three words: No. Trade. Clause. That sums up Ramirez's situation. The Cubs don't want to trade him. They haven't thought about trading him. He and his agent didn't bargain for a no-trade clause (complete through 2010 and partial through 2011) to be traded. It's simply not happening. I'm not going to get into bashing somebody on my own paper. My view toward Ramirez: Great player. The "hustle" thing is a complete red herring. His teammates like him.

  12. Before we jump to conclusions about stupid decisions and such, let's find out if Zambrano suffered from cramps again. Lou talked before the game of letting him go 100-110 pitches.
  13. Actually, yes. I was part of ESPN's "Five Reasons You Can't Blame Bartman" special. I hated to see this kid get tarred and feathered. Alex Gonzalez ought to send Bartman Christmas cards every year. The thing I hate about the networks is their fascination with Bartman and the goat.
  14. Here's the thing: Sometimes you've got to go out on a limb. In '05, having watched the Cubs-Astros finish the regular season, I thought the 'Stros bullpen was pretty vulnerable. So I toyed with picking the White Sox in four in the Serious. But I chickened out and played it safe with picking the Sox in 5. So, what the heck, let's go with a Cubs sweep. BTW, I've got a great right-hand man helping me in Tim Sassone. He's our Blackhawks writer and a nominee for the writers' wing of the hockey Hall of Fame. Check out his stuff on our page. Tim does a great, great job. If he has the Hawks winning the Central I'll know you two have either spent too much time in the sun or the bars. Wait a minute, does this mean nobody is minding the ship up there in Minnesota for Thursday's game? We'll have somebody else in Minny. I think Tim has the Hawks 11th in the West or the Campbell or whatever they call the conference nowadays. Being a hockey fan myself, all I can say is: Drop the puck!!

  16. Happy playoffs to one and all. Hey, over at dailyherald.com, we've got a page devoted exclusively to the Cubs. Check it out: http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs/ They also gave a blog to some dorky Cubs writer to likes Rush. Cubs in 3. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
  17. DeRosa will go in later in the game. The other regulars wanted some ABs. Looks like Lilly will pitch 2 innings followed by a parade of relievers for an inning each. That'll be the spring-training part!!
  18. Soriano, LF Fontenot, 2B Lee, 1B Floyd, RF Ramirez, 3B Jones, CF Cedeno, SS Kendall, C Lilly, P Keppinger, SS Hanigan, C Votto, LF Encarnacion, 3B Cantu, 1B Coats, CF Ellison, RF Lopez, 2B Bailey, P
  19. Lilly will pitch tomorrow, but maybe only a couple innngs.
  20. Lineups Cubs Theriot, SS Fontenot, 2B Murton, LF Soto, C Pie, CF Cedeno, 3B Blanco, 1B Fuld, RF Hill, P Reds Hopper, CF Keppinger, SS Votto, LF Phillips, 2B Encarnacion, 3B Cantu, 1B Ross, C Ellison, RF Harang, P
  21. Was he provoked in any way to lash out or was he just irritated the media were there and felt like being a jerk? It doesn't seem out of character for him to act like a pompous ass. He was clear at the other end of the clubhouse. We didn't even know he was there. He made a special effort to yell down at us for no apparent reason.
  22. Yeah, I heard the same thing. Jesse Rogers said Trachsel was just giving the reporters a hard time and was laughing when he did it. He said he also asked them if they had a deadline or something to worry about. He said it was pretty clear to him that Trachsel was playing around with them and he was surprised at the reaction to it. That's what you get for listening. Trachsel clearly was not laughing or joking. No, it wasn't all that big a deal, but it was totally uncalled for, unprofessional, and Lou and the coaches were not amused. The clubhouse has been a pretty nice place this year, and I'm sure Lou feels they don't need a sourpuss like Trachsel ruining things. (And Cubs players were watching the game.)
  23. Cubs go this way Soriano, LF Jones, CF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Floyd, RF DeRosa, 2B Kendall, C Theriot, SS Marshall, P
  24. Bruce, What's your take on this? Are Selig and the boys trying to ram Canning down the Trib's throat? Is there a lot more to this than what's being reported? I sure would like RedIvyCub to make an appearance. She seems to have a handle of some of the inner workings of these things. I'm not privy to a lot of this stuff, being with the team every day and all. MLB will have its preferences, but how hard they're pushing for one group or another, I don't know.
