  1. i'm not so sure. he tends to get painted this way because he grew up in the burbs and went to Northwestern I am pretty sure he grew up in NY; he was certainly born there. Stuyvesant is a prominent private school located in Manhattan. My stepfather attended in the 60's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Greenberg Thus he is a Jets fan. He covered the Bulls and to a lesser extent the Cubs while working here back in the early and mid 90's following his graduation from Northwestern. I doubt he grew up loving Chicago baseball, but he doesn't seem to mention it on-air.
  2. Awesome. I was really concerned that Reinsdorf would try and block this with all his might. The Cubs are only half of what they could be and they still make the Sox look silly. Imagine what a motivated owner will do with them.
  3. I think Konerko's on his way out. I don't know. He still has $24 million left on his contract over the next 2 years. White Sox would have to pick up quite a bit of that to get him traded. And the fans love the guy.
  4. Do it Jerry - send them a 2nd Rnd pick and get a real QB. Then you can cut Sexy Rexy and we can all move on.
  5. I like Giles, but DeJesus makes more sense insomuch as he gives you more options going forward. During the offseason you can package Pie for another starting picther, or do the same with DeJesus himself.
  6. I just don't understand this trade from the Sox perspective. I know we don't know who they gave up yet, but how does this make them an appreciably better team?
  7. Sheesh, the Sox are well on their way to becoming the midwest version of the Giants - maybe not this year, but check back in 2010.
  8. They tried to move Hester to WR at Miami and he couldn't hack it. Obviously he can put far more time to making the adjustment at the NFL level. Just saying.
  9. My man-love for Manny is well-documented on this bd. I just don't think we have the prospects or ML players it would take to get him. Would you trade Kosuke for him straight-up?
  10. Crud. I was hoping Jim could land him for our bench. He could give ARam and Derrek a day off here and there, plus be a valuable RH PH'er off the bench.
  11. I guess that isn't a great haul for the Bucos, but Nady and Marte aren't exactly top-flight players either. If one or two of those guys turn into solid ML contributors then its a nice trade for them.
  12. Does this trade in any way open up some roster position of import? Otherwise why even make it?
  13. I'm going to that 4th game. I want to see Harden in person, dangit! Likewise - its my son's first Cubs game and I don't need him thinking Marquis is a model for the big league picther.
  14. This. Interview AGon (who dropped the ground ball), Alou (who through a temper tantrum in the middle of arguably the biggest game in franchise history), Prior (who gave up most of the hits), and Baker (whose craptacular management left Prior out there to twist in the wind after the team behind him folded-up mentally).
  15. I think some of the questions that are being asked of RedIvy are appropriate, but some of the attacks are inexplicable. I don't think she is claiming to "know" what will happen - its pretty obvious that she is simply stating her opinion, which is informed by the fact that she worked for or around these people for several years. Take it with a grain of a salt like all the other insider info that comes out on this bd and through the press. I hope RedIvy continues to post here so that we can have an insider perspective on some of the peripheral issues involved here.
  16. Agreed. But his agent is probably telling him that the risk-reward balance is weighing pretty heavily on the side of reward. That is what I would tell him also.
  17. I think Hester is in the higher leverage situation here. The Bears need him far more than he needs them.
  18. I would think that a pitcher wouldn't want a callous on the pads of his fingers as he would lose "feel" for the ball Good point. Anyone have any info on this sort of thing from a pitcher's perspective?
  19. I wouldn't have spent that kind of money of Berrian either. He wasn't even close to being worth it. Are there any good WR free agents out there next year? Not sure. I think in football that depends on too many unpredictable factors (how well a team does determines what they do in the offseason with their pricey vets, etc.).
  20. Like not winning a playoff game in 12 years. Do we rate owners by how much money they make, or by how successful their teams are? 1 usually follows 2, so I guess you can say the Bears ownership isn't capitalizing if they are only middle of the pack in profit. But they Bears have been inconsistent lately which doesn't help. True, but I think its unfair to imply that they have been cheap. Angelo is frugal - partiucularly on offense - but I think that is more of a philosophy of how best to build a quality team with depth rather than tight-fistedness. Look at the Skins - Dan Snyder throws money at everyone and anyone who will take it, yet they haven't been a serious, top-of-the-line contender since the first Gibbs era. It takes more than just money to make a good NFL team. Without having looked, I would bet there is greater correlation between winning and solid drafting than there is solid FA pick-ups.
  21. How about an evaluation of the upcoming FA class juxtaposed against what the Cubs will likely need and/or want. Might be a bit premature since the jury is still out on this season, but could be a good one for the future.
  22. Does a pitcher's blister eventually become a callous? When I first started lifting weights as a teen I would get blisters, but eventually they hardened. I have been lifting pretty consistently since and have never lost them. Is it different for pitchers because of the seams on the ball?
  23. Time to stop pitching him in blowouts. Actually I prefer that he be used in less intense situations until we are sure he is back up and running. He hadn't pitched since the ASG, so he does have to stay sharp. With Kerry not able to go right now, you need to make sure that Marmol keeps his confidence up. To me today was a good outing for him. Demp finally got the road win out of the way, and Carlos got a bit of work. No harm done. Now if the same thing were to happen tomorrow, then I would question it.. Not to mention the game wasn't a blowout at the time he started warming up and the decision to not pitch Dempster in the 9th was made. It became a blowout in the top of the 9th. At which point 'Los was already warm and it would have been a waste not to let him get the work.
  24. If you forget the possibility of 'roids ands corks, Albert Belle had a few seasons that were as dominant as any in history. Career: http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/belleal01.shtml Highlights: The man finished with a career OPS-plus of 143 and slugging pct of .564. Had he stayed healthy, its reasonable to believe he would have finished with 500 HR's, more likely 550 or so. What a hitter.
