He's not worth what he'll get. If we could get him cheap then of course, but he's just not worth the long term investment he'll want. If we can get him for 10 per or under I think we should sign him. I think we've got to take a chance with a pitcher like him. If some of our young arms emerge as legit starters over the next two years then we can always trade him. I'd have to agree with Wolf here. Burnett has a career ERA plus of 110, serious injury concerns, and he'll be 29 next year. His age leads me to believe perhaps he's a guy with great stuff, but might never be able to put it all together. Why did he collapse down the stretch this year when the Marlins needed him the most? It will also compromise what I believe to be our biggest need, a productive RF. I read your initial post, VA, but I'll have to go back and see how you solved our outfield. I don't think 10 mil will do it for Burnett, but even if it does, we'll be bone dry and left with more holes than we started with. Well if 10 million doesn't do it for Burnett then we pass. Even that is probably too much money for him. I'm being super greedy and thinking that we can get Giles and Burnett. In order to do that we let Morris go, let Walker go, that frees up some cash. 2006 is Edmond's last season before a club option which we do not exercise. We trade Marquis and whatever he would make in arbitration and bring up Reyes who is cheap and will probably won't do any worse than Marquis. There is an assumption here that the owners are going to spend more money next year like the said they would. I haven't done the math, so if it doesn't work for both Giles and Burnett, we still get Burnett and trade for a young impact outfielder from possibly Texas, Tampa, or Cleveland, or wherever for that matter.
