  1. Why didn't the Cubs just cut Izturis if they wanted to open up a roster spot? Because this way they save a couple hundred thousand and presumably get some sort of asset in the form of a PTBNL. Yeah, might as well get something back. Look how Fontenot has turned out for the Cubs after coming over as filler in the Sosa trade. Look how A ball prospect Dontrelle Willis turned out for Florida. You never know, it worth getting something back in return. Not so well recently. Still helped them win a World Series regardless of how poorly he has played this year. And I am guessing he will be shipped out for some decent prospects in the next week or so.

  3. I don't think that will be such a huge number by the time the bidding is done. It is likely IMO that the bidding will reach close to 1 billion just because of the number of buyers involved and the passion that some of them will have to really want to buy the Cubs (Cuban won't be the only one who won't look it as completely a business decision). Yeah...if $850 million is his cap...I don't know if he'd even be the top bidder...which would make it much easier for MLB to say "we gave him a shot!" Yeah I've heard as high as $1billion. $850mil doesn't seem all that much. The Forbes value of the ballclub is pretty much meaningless when determining how much it will sell for. The Forbes number is for just the ballclub I believe, and does not include Wrigely Field, which in all likelihood would be sold along with the Cubs in a package deal.
  4. Pirates 1-0 on a Doumit homer to lead off the second
  5. 10 pitches to boot, nice. Come on Buccos
  6. He's batting 2nd. I should learn how to read. I guess the "Chicago Cubs" are not batting leadoff.
  7. Ok, but the last time he went PAST the fifth inning was May 24th. Which tells me that's he's been sucking. Last three starts he has pitched 5 1/3, 5, and 5 2/3. so he has actually pitched past the 5th inning twice in his last three starts.
  8. I am not sure what is going to happen but I think they are going to go with a 12 man staff. They may send 1 pitcher and 1 position player down and call up two pitchers. Or someone may mysteriously go on the DL.
  9. It's been 2 appearences and he was a bit of a surprise callup to begin with. I hardly would consider it a shocking move. I'm not going to upset if its Billy. He'll be back. I agree, people are talking like Petrick has been the second coming. He got a taste and if he continues to pitch well he will get a chance. Right now the Cubs are a man short in the bullpen and logistically this was an easy move to make. I think you will see some mixing and matching as needed through the all star break and when Dempster gets back you will see a more set bullpen.
  10. Cherry it is, with Petrick being sent down. I think they will try and get through the all star break mixing and matching the best they can and when Dempster gets back I think the roles in the bullpen will be more defined with Dempster closing and Howry and Marmol setting him up. Eyre is going to get some mop up and middle inning work, Ohman will be the loogy and Wuertz will be Wuertz. With Guzman, Wood, or a host of others looking to fill that last spot.
  11. Just heard an update on the Score - they did verify that Cherry is at Wrigley but no announcement has been made yet as to who has been sent down.
  12. It's not Pagan. If the lineup anounced in the game thread is correct, he is starting in CF today.
  13. With Hill only lasting 3 innings today and the fact we have a short pen, assuming Jock is not traded do you think a move needs to be made? If so, who gets sent down and who comes up? Theriot down and Rapada or Cherry gets brought up?
  14. His lack of homers are starting to get frustrating. Extremely frustrating very quickly. I am not worried. Lee is still hitting a lot of line drives has 26 double and a .900+ OPS. If the doubles were down too, I would be more concerned, but he is stroking it, I think the homers will come.
  15. he won't. he's said he's not going back to China, and even though is "people" wanted him to land in a major metropolitan city, I doubt he walks away from the Bucks I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucks trade Yi. He doesn't want to be there, and the Bucks just picked up the options of Bogut and Villanueva. The Bucks need a point guard and that Sessions kid out of Nevada isn't it. I have heard a few unsubstantiated rumors floating around of the Bucks looking to acquire last years #6 pick in the draft Devin Harris who is from Milwaukee.
  16. With how the bullpen has been worked lately I would think they will keep Dempster in the pen, probably closing. If Marmol continues to shine over the next 10 days. You might see Dempster as trade bait.
  17. Really? I looked at the radar earlier and didn't see much of a threat. Let's hope they can get this one in. How many innings do we need? 4.5? yep assuming the Cubs are still leading
  18. While Zell may not have been involved due to financial matters, he is still a part owner of the White Sox and maybe he vetoed it for other matters not having to do with money. That may be a cynical look at it, but people have done things for lesser reasons.
  19. Looking forward to the season. There are high expectations for the Badgers this season with, I believe 17 returning starters. Should come down to Wisconsin, Michigan, and Penn St. I am disappointed that I am going to miss two of the biggest games of the year though. I am getting married 11/3 when the Badgers play at Ohio St. and then will be on my honeymoon when they host Michigan (I hope my brother appreciates the fact he will get 2 extra tix for that game)
  20. Not booing him as a person, but you can boo his performance. Booing has been shown to not improve player performance. See Patterson, Corey and Hawkins, LaTroy. Booing shouldn't make a difference one way or another. Those two were just plain bad and are still bad. By booing, fans voiced their displeasure, management took notice, and now they are gone. If a player has that thin of skin and can't own up to their own suckiness, then too bad for them.

  22. Jacque Jones was doomed from the start with the Cubs because of the contract given to him. I think Jacque is a really nice guy and wasn't terrible in his only full year with the Cubs. He doesn't deserve the racist comments and random booing that Cubs fans gave him. He will always have a negative impression of this city and Cubs fans because of it. Oh well. A) no one deserves the racist comments that may have been made. B) the contract wasn't that bad, if he actually produced this season like he did last year, no one would have said anything aside from "trade him while he's high" C) being little-league bad for a large portion of your contract will get the fans mad at you, true. He's only been "little-league bad" for half a year. As was pointed out earlier, he was good for the full 2006 season. UMFan is correct, Jacque was doomed from the start. He may have recovered from a slow start offensively, but he was little league bad in the field and on the basepaths last year. Still wasn't worth his contract. By the time he started hitting the Cubs were out of it, this year is what can be expected.
