  1. Do like European soccer does and demote the bottom 3 teams every year to the minors.
  2. The Summer of '98 was probably the most fun I've ever had watching baseball.
  3. Just saw this on ESPN.com. This is going to absolutely kill the Sox with Manny being hurt right now as well. Hopefully he gets better. I think the Sox are pretty much dead anyway.
  4. I've lost all faith in Jim Hendry to make any competent moves anymore.
  5. Say what you will, but they always find the postseason, and they'll probably win their division this year as well. Come to think of it, how many of the Yankees starters came up through their system? Jeter Wang Cano Cabrera Green Maybe this year will be different, but they've yet to show that spending the extra money actually works. That's what happens when you're stuck paying the Randy Johnsons of the world $15+ million a year. And practically speaking, if a team tries to buy a championship in a single season, the odds are that they'll not only fail, but that they'll have to drastically cut payroll for several seasons and go into rebuilding mode. See: 1997 Marlins.
  6. Agreed. How pathetic is it that I'm 25 years old and highly doubtful I'll see the Cubs win the World Series before I die?
  7. I'll take up a collection right now to pay for the plane ticket.
  8. Maybe one of the many smarter-than-me NSBB'ers can answer this question: At one time, I think the early 90's or so, the Cubs required their starters to throw twice in between starts instead of just once. Was this just a rumor or was it fact, and if it was fact, is it still going on today?
  9. I don't think that Williams display was an actual statistical measurement of his batting average on pitches in that location, but rather his guess on his batting average.
  10. I disagree with anyone who says these tests are unhelpful. I think testing reflexes is hugely important. This game is all about reflexes. Also, seeing how Pujols took to that one test where he needed to cross out all the a's and the way he analyzed it was very interesting to me. On the field you often times have one second or less to analyze a situation, problem, etc and find a solution for it.
  11. I forgot...who did we trade Bay for? Bartosh.
  12. We should have a "Rob Neyer is stupid" thread.
  13. He was damaged goods when the Cubs traded him. Frankly, I suprized the Cubs didn't get called out. Beltran never did it for me. He had good stuff, but his control issues were absolutely maddening.
  14. What about that Willis guy?
  15. I would happily pay for the plane ticket from Chicago to Toronto.
  16. That's my favorite moment, too. Think Dusty is crying like a baby on the floor of his office right now?
  17. So the very last team who could have taken him did, right? Did the Tigers claim him, or did he pass through and were we able to convince Detroit to take him?
  18. Now that Dusty's favorite toy is gone, I hope Dusty won't be far behind.
  19. Mannon Rheume or something.
  20. I wouldn't say ALL ex-players. Lasorda, Cox, Torre, etc are all ex-players and they're doing pretty well, I think. Disagree on Torre and especially Lasorda. Lasorda got a good GM (Depodesta) run out of town, and Torre is far from a tactical mastermind. Just because Lasorda had some personal issues with his GM does not necessarily mean he was a bad judge of talent.
  21. I wouldn't say ALL ex-players. Lasorda, Cox, Torre, etc are all ex-players and they're doing pretty well, I think.
  22. I've never been a huge pitch count guy, but that was just stupid of Dusty. What was the point? Dusty always pulls crap like this. I remember sometime in April of '04 in a game in Pittsburgh when the Cubs were winning in a laugher, and Z was in until the 8th I think up in the 120+ pitch count range, when he could have been taken out 2 innings earlier and the Cubs would have been fine. That still makes me mad when I think about it.
  23. For the life of me I can't understand why Hendry doesn't just give him the ax now and let someone else take over for the rest of the year, then find a permanent manager in the off-season. Oh wait, yes I do. It's Jim Hendry! It makes perfect sense to me now.
  24. That was the prevailing rumor at the time. He was hesitant about returning to the Cubs. For good reason.
