  1. The only Major Leaguer my hometown has ever produced. Hooray?
  2. It's probable that that'll happen regardless of who we face. We're just one of 8. Given one team or the field, gotta take the field. Knowing that, just enjoy the ride and hope it happens. True, but I like our chances against anyone else in the NL except Arizona.
  3. and depressing to know that if we go 2-3 in the first round of the playoffs, the season is over. no kidding...all playoff series should be 7 games. You guys are making me nervous and it's not even September yet. I've been nervous the whole season! Its a Cub fan thing. We could be up by 5 in game 7 of the World Series with nobody on, 2 outs and 2 strikes and be thinking now how will we blow this one. I won't believe it until the final out is recorded and I'm drunk from all the celebrating. Actually, maybe not until the next day when I wake up with the most massive hangover ever. I'm scarred that way. Give me a break I can't help it. It stinks that if (when?) we run into Webb, Haren, and Johnson, there is a very good chance that this whole amazing season could very well amount to squat.
  4. And hopefully at Christmas in the Wintertime I'll be opening all sorts of Cubs World Series Chamipionship merchandise.
  5. Sac fly (not far from a homer), and a bases loaded single. I see he has 2 hits tonight, too. I hope his bat stays hot the rest of the way.
  6. How did Fukudome get his 3 RBI? He's heating up. That's always good.
  7. Never thought I'd hear that sentence about the Cubs, especially after the last few years. He was talking about the Brewers (Gorzelanny threw tonight against Milwaukee) but it sure is nice to see the Cubs mashing against left-handers. But that hasn't been highly unusual though. In the last 6 years, the Cubs have been better against left-handers 3 years (2003, 2005, 2008) and better against right-handers the other 3 years (2004, 2006, 2007). They were the best team in the NL against left-handers in 2005 in OPS, and they are 2nd best this year. But last year they were historically bad against lefties. Glad to see that's changed.
  8. Never thought I'd hear that sentence about the Cubs, especially after the last few years.
  9. As much as I love Z, he's still far too emotional and still gets too pissed off sometimes to be fully trusted in a big game yet.
  10. Holy crap! I didn't see any of the game (all I heard was DeRosa's homer). Aram had a hell of a game today. 2 HR and 6 RBI? Geez.
  11. A Cuban Taekwando figher has been banned from Olympic competition for life after kicking the referee in the face after being disqualified. http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/judo/news/story?id=3549903
  12. If Shark keeps it up, Gaudin, Shark, Marmol, Wood is one HELL of a pen. I'm not necessarily advocating he goes to the rotation. Just throwing it out there.
  13. If I remember, I'll contribute too. Actually, I probably won't be here for playoff game threads.... they would drive me absolutely nuts and I'll probably be sitting on a friend's couch or at a bar or something. Most of it isn't complaining about the Cubs. Most of it is people complaining about the complaining. Apparently you're not supposed to point out when they suck. Who knew?
  14. Nothing like a drubbing by the worst team in the league to really put things into perspective, eh boys?
  15. ESPN just had a little screen stat about Z. He is now the active leader in pitchers for career HR, and has more career homers than Juan Pierre and Cesar Izturis.
  16. As it stands at this moment, our Opening Day Rotation is Z, Harden, Lilly, ?, ?. There is no guarantee that Demp will be here (and I'm very torn on him. I'll save it for another thread), and I can't see Marquis starting again. Samardija started in the minors, and actually did pretty well in Iowa. So, the question is multi-fold: A) Will there be any obtainable and worthwhile FA pitchers on the market who are better options? B) Do you want to break up a possibly unbeatable Shark/Marmol/Wood combo in the pen that could be possibly the best bullpen trio since Charlton/Dibble/Myers for the Reds back in 1990? I suppose there are worse options. I was reading the article about him in the current SI and got to thinking.
  17. It's just a slump, as I said on page one when everyone laughed at me. We'll be fine. People laughed at you because you arbitrarily removed about 11 runs of production from a 5 game span to justify calling it a slump. No people still we're laughing at me after I justified my gut feeling by showing the Cubs were battling like .233 with a sub .300 SLG during that same time frame. People only like the stats that are pleasing to them.
  18. I do too, I'm sure he's not happy about it. But, this is the major leagues and he's been a disappointment. You just have to take the criticism sometimes. If he doesn't like it, then he should start hitting. It'll go away. If you don't want people to point out that you suck at your job, then don't suck at your job.
  19. There was some overreacting last night, sure, but there was far more overreacting to the overreacting.
