  1. I don't know if I agree that the Reds are the favorite for the division this year. Regarding the Cubs, I would guess about 3 years including the upcoming season before they have all the pieces in place.
  2. I think this signing was as much about PR as it was anything else. Losing Pujols hurt, but continuing to lose players that were part of the last two World Series teams would look even worse because of the supposed payroll flexibility. I don't think it's a bad extension for a few reasons: The Cardinals don't have a catcher in the pipeline that grades out as well as they have at other positions. They have a lot of young arms that are already at the MLB level, or will be there soon. Having Molina there as the constant is a good thing. He has a lot of mileage on those knees, but if his brothers are any indication, he should be fine for at least the duration of this contract. I don't love the deal, but it's not terrible. It's also not my money.
  3. I'm not a Cubs fan, but I live about 10 minutes from Wrigley. I'm looking forward to some spur of the moment decisions to take in a game and grab some cheap tickets outside the stadium. I figure during late August & September mid-week games there should be tickets laying around on the street for people. This will only last for a season or so as they start getting more young players and a couple free agents mixed in.
  4. St. Louis ownership has alluded to raising the payroll to 110 mil. This isn't a done deal, but "if" Pujols signs and the payroll can be raised to that level they should be fine. At that point they just need to keep moving guys like Jay, Craig, Motte etc. through the system and hope that Shelby Miller is the real deal.
  5. Or, you know, the Cubs. Only they don't have to find it laying around. It's there. Shhhh, cardinal fans are busy pretending like we don't have any money. The Limestone Cubs can't afford to pay Albert big money. The Cubs were part of my "etc". That said, I highly doubt that they're planning to spending that much on one player over the age of 30. They have enough of that already (Soriano). As Cubs fans, you should be happy that the focus seems to be on building through the draft & farm system. Everything I'm seeing is that Team Theo is looking at 2013 and beyond. Pujols doesn't fit that model.
  6. I think it's a decent hire. Because there's no track record to go on, nobody can say if it's a good or bad hire yet. I think it has the potential to be good. Matheny (like Alomar) is a player that was always talked about as being managerial material. I think this has almost no influence on the Pujols signing. If the coaching staff stays largely intact I think it's a plus. But as stated before, it's going to come down to money and the other offers he gets. If the Marlins, Washington, Toronto etc. find an extra 250 million laying around then it doesn't matter who manages any team.
  7. Hey folks, I've posted here for a long time, but lurk for the most part. I'm a Cardinal fan in Chicago, my parents are Cub fans and my wife is a Sox fan. I have a pretty good understanding of all the rivalries. I want to echo the sentiments of a couple other Cards fans. I'm excited that the Cubs are making bold moves that could set them up for some true sustained success. I don't expect anyone here to be happy (at all) about the Cardinals 2011 season, but I hope I'm not alone in recognizing this is a great rivalry. There is nothing I enjoy more than June & July games at Wrigley watching both teams. I went to Game 1 of the NLCS in Milwaukee and all I could think about is how amazing it would be to one day do the same at Wrigley. This last decade hasn't really seen the Cards and Cubs matched up on the same years. Rivalries are meant to be competitive and I can't wait for September and October games between both our teams that matter. 2012 and onward should be some fantastic baseball theater for all of us.
  8. That's what I've heard. A lot like old Tiger or old Comisky. The renovated Fenway is fantastic. And I generally hate both the Red Sox, and New England...
  9. Agreed, but it is far from a dump IMO. From the player's perspective, it's a dump I thought it was charming, then I took a trip to Fenway. Now I think it's a dump. You mentioned the players, and that is true because they see a side of Wrigley we rarely do. The clubhouses and general underbelly of the place is apparently a major mess.
  10. I lurk. I'm also a Cardinals fan living in Chicago so I intentionally don't post much because it can seem trollish when the Cubs are kind of a mess as an organization. I still like the site and the forum though.
  11. Last one I remember was Sheffield winning out in AVE and RBI but getting beat in HRs (by one or two) by then teammate Fred McGriff when they were in San Diego.
  12. Probably the strongest case for C0-MVPs I've seen in a while. Both teams would be in a world of hurt without them, and both are within margin of error of each other. Great race.
  13. Often the description of the South Side of Chicago...
  14. If somebody kicked you in the back with metal spikes you might be upset for a couple days. If that's your definition of being "a little bitch" then I guess you're right. If that garbage happened to Dempster this board would be melting down right now.
  15. I think there's something to that.
  16. ...I see. Based on this knowledge, my question still stands, why didn't Cueto get hit hard until 5 innings after the fight? Molina did come right back and hit a home run in the 2nd, but I see your point. No one will ever know if Cueto gassed out or lost his edge later in the game because of brawl. But I think it's very possible.
  17. You're right. They are robots that you can predict their results with a series of simulations. Emotions play no role in what happens on the field. How a player or group of players react to something has nothing to do with actual results. I get what you're saying (i think). The Cardinals are just a better team and what any player says doesn't have an impact on how well they can hit a ball with a bat. But do you really believe that without all of the hubub over Phillips' comments they would have taken them behind the woodshed that badly? My thoughts on your 2 questions. 1) It was the Cardinals that were defending their honor to begin with. The Reds seemed a little punch drunk for the last 2 games. 2) I think they were motivated, and as I already said, I think the bigger impact was the negative one for the Reds.
  18. So you think Phillips made the Cardinals play better or the Reds play worse? I'm saying that his comments had an effect on the series. For instance. The brawl was a direct result of Phillips comments. I think the brawl had a big effect on Cueto and how he pitched that day. He was on a roll of several great starts in a row, and then he blows up. So yeah, I think Phillips' comments helped result in poor play for Cueto. I do not think that he helped Jay or Holliday hit key doubles, or kept Stubs from making routine plays on foul balls in the outfield. I don't believe in a magic on/off switch that players can flip to play better or worse, but I do believe that later in a 162 game season that players can be searching for motivation in any form they can find it.
  19. I'm not saying that the Cardinals will win the division because of what Phillips said. I do believe that his comments had an effect on the level of play in the series, and "if" the Cardinals win the division this will probably be looked back on as a turning point in the season. The Reds' terrible defense and poor hitting were the big reasons for the sweep, but I think taking the emotional element out of a 162 game grind is short sighted.
  20. If somebody called you and your teammates a bunch of little bitches and then tried to act like he was just kidding and it's all good... I was concerned about the Cardinals winning the division again this year until last night. I'm not anymore. Phillips poked the bear. The Reds are a Dusty Baker team and they're showing it.
  21. I think it may only be the hicks from Cincy and STL that have problems. Them and the cheeseheads. Gee, and with comments like that you wonder why people in St. Louis have strong opinions about Cubs fans. Go to a Chicago Rush game sometime. Chicagoland has it's fair share of toothless wonders. It sounds like Votto was joking around, and Bruce Levine was trying to get some headlines (that's who the Chicago reporter was). "If" Votto was serious, and I don't think he was, it would fit with everything I've heard and seen from Dusty Baker teams.
  22. I read that he's going to chase a 200 Million Dollar deal. The idea of him playing in his late 30s and making 25+ a year? You thought the Soriano contract was bad...
  23. I don't see Gonzalez landing in the NL Central. Maybe not even the NL. The asking price is going to be sky high, and even if it gets to a half season of service it will probably cost a very good prospect. Remember a couple things. A) the rumor about the proposed White Sox trade had Beckham involved. That's a young but already MLB quality guy with a good to great ceiling. B) if the Padres hold onto him all the way to free agency, they'll probably get a first round draft pick. "If" he gets dealt this year you can look at the Halladay trade for what it would cost. If next year, you can look at the Holliday trade. Either way, is Gonzalez the kind of player that the Cubs should even be looking at? With Lilly leaving (probably) and Zambrano entering his decline years they may want to refocus on investing on pitching. Just my thoughts on it.
  24. Yeah, because Favre was in his peak years, and the Packers didn't have a replacement in house ready to take the job. Thanks for proving my point.
  25. Come on. This is a smarter baseball forum than most. You should see the difference. The Cardinals have upside talent around Pujols for the next few years that's either already locked into contracts, or still in arb years. St. Louis is a Baseball town and having the best player in the game is not lost on ownership or the fans. Franchise players rarely leave their teams in their peak years if the team can afford to resign them, which the Cardinals can. I understand that he could go to another team if something crazy like a 350 million dollar contract is offered, but I just don't see it getting to that point. I think St. Louis signs him to an extension before opening day 2011.
