  1. I think that would be an excellent move!
  2. Ah the wonders of gastric bypass surgery!
  3. Anyone wanna guess when the first game of the 2006 season will include Mabry, Neifi and Macias in the starting lineup?? (I'm jesting.... I HOPE!!!)
  4. Hehe thanks - I can't believe I was too lazy to look up the spelling :-P.
  5. I could live with Floyd - it's certainly not my #1 choice, but I don't think it would be that bad
  6. Yah, that's what they're asking here in Boston as well. I believe Wakefield was 0-5 when Varitek caught him during the season while Doug was hurt - he even admitted afterward that he's just not comfortable throwing to anyone else. They're guessing that Shopek (sp?) will step in as the defensive "specialist" and backup for Tek - how would you like to come in as a rookie catcher and be told your first job will be to catch a knuckleballer :-P
  7. Both WEEI and local Boston TV is reporting Mirabelli straight up for Loretta - no mention of anyone else.
  8. It's almost a guarantee that Millar and Mueller will not be returning, Renteria is being shopped VERY heavily, Nixon's name has come up in alot of rumors and I'll honestly be surprised if Damon re-signs with Boston. I think Boston will have a very different team come the start of the 2006 season.
  9. Jeez man, I'm sorry Same here - really sorry to hear that :-(. Keep the faith, maybe there's something that can be done!
  10. In response to us having Coleman, yes, he did help out in spring training last year - and I thought he helps us out in the minors as well. Yes, he's a roving minor league instructor. Well, it would be awfully nice if he "rove" to spring training and spent alot of time with Pierre working on reading pitchers and getting good jumps. I'm a pessimist by nature, but I take heart in the fact that I personally think we have a better person leading off and playing CF in 2006 than we did in 2005. I want to see more puzzle holes filled though!
  11. Just curious - didn't we have Vince Coleman helping out in spring training last year? If it wasn't him, I could have sworn we had a former basestealer in camp for awhile coaching. Pierre is only 28 and he certainly has the speed - any chance he can learn enough about basestealing to cut his CS down to a minimum?
  12. In 2004 Pierre hit .380 in (non-sacrifice) bunt attempts. In 2005 he hit .431 when bunting for a hit. This is interesting stat: We know Dusty likes guys who can excute a bunt. The tall grass in the Wrigley field IF will only help Pierre. If by "help" you mean "hurt", I agree. Pierre hits ground balls. On the ground. In the grass. they will go slowly. Fielders will get them. they will not go through holes to the OF. He will be thrown out That's really interesting, however let me toss this argument out for you to discuss. Pierre hits ground balls. On the ground. In the grass. They will go slowly. Fielders will get them. They will not go through holes to the OF. Pierre will beat out plenty of those ground balls for hits because the grass in longer. I don't see any reason my theory is any better or worse than yours so it looks like a wash to me.
  13. Those of you who are really complaining that we gave up too much for Pierre.... Don't you think that if Nolasco, Pinto and Mitre were so highly regarded by other teams that we would have traded them for something more??? None of us here have a clue what offers have and have not been made in any trades involving us, so we can sit here and discuss and argue the merits or faults of this trade, but to say that we could have gotten so much more for the 3 guys we traded just doesn't cut it for me. My guess is those 3 guys names have come up in many trade offers and other teams simply don't value our minor league prospects as highly as some of you do. Who's right and who's wrong - we'll find out in a few years, but sheesh let's just move forward from this move and see what other pieces to the puzzle Hendry tries to fill shall we?
  14. I've got no problem with the trade either DK - seems as though there are alot of second guessers here who are gonna complain any time we don't field a complete team of All-Stars. I've been sick and tired for far too long with "can't miss" prospects turning into big time flops. I have no choice but to trust that our minor league coaches and organizational evaluators don't see enough potential in the 3 going to Florida to keep them with us instead. Will it be a good trade for us?? Who knows.... that's the nature of trading prospects - it's a crap shoot most of the time. I'm just happy to see that Hendry has pciked up a major league CF who can fits into our ballclub right now. Now it's time to move on - Patterson has to be moved in the very near future. I wish he could have "discovered himself" and become the player we all saw flashes of, but I'm afraid his chances with the Cubs have come to an end. Wherever he goes I wish him well (unless it's the Cardinals!). So the question in my mind is.... with Pierre in our lineup, do the groundskeepers keep the infield grass really long, or do they cut it really short??
  15. I guess I would be satisfied as long as we don't sign any of them to long term untradeable contracts. I don't think it would be enough to make us a force in the NL Central, but there's always the "if" that Wood, Zambrano and Prior stay healthy all year and pitch like we know they can - a couple other hitters step up and have above average years and we could be right in the mix. If we signed them to short term/tradeable contracts, play Murton and Cedeno and find out just how good or bad they are, we might have the money to hit the FA market hard in the 2006 offseason and really put together a contender for 2007 and beyond. Alot of if's, but I don't see much other choice right now.
  16. FWIW - WEEI in Boston has been talking to their folks down in Dallas and the names Matt Clement/Trot Nixon and prospects for Abreu has come up. The sportsshow guys can't believe Philly would make a trade like that, but if the prospect(s) weren't top line guys, they expect Boston would jump at that opportunity. Also - more talk of Boston getting Glaus and getting rid of Manny - putting Glaus at 1B and hoping he can be at least a better defensive 1B than Millar.
  17. Loretta can play a decent 2B, Mueller is an unknown. Aye - not only that, but Mueller not only doesn't want to play 2B, but the pivot causes him problems because of his legs/knees and I doubt he would be able to hold up with extended use there.
  18. I'm always of the opinion that if a deal can be made that improves the team, then NOBODY is off limits for trades - and that means Lee, Prior, Zambrano or Ramirez. Now granted it would take me alot to move those guys, but I entertain any and all offers and see what happens. I'm also of the opinion that if a team thinks they are 1 or 2 players away from truly fielding a WS caliber team for the next 2-3 years, then any and all minor league prospects are also on the block - again for the right trade. My problem with the Cubs has always been that I mistrust our "braintrust" to evalute both our organizational talent and that of other clubs (with Aram being an exception at this point). I'll wait until spring training starts to evaluate our offseason moves and make any bold predictions for 2006, but as of right now in general I'm not too impressed with most of the names I hear in trade rumors possibly coming to us. *sigh* - life as a Cub fan is truly an effort at times. Oh - by the way, I'm sure this has been answered before, but Is_Pedro_There, who in the world is that amazingly attractive woman you have in your sig!!???
  19. The difference is, Neifi will get a whole heck of a lot more AB's than Deivi thanks to Dusty's love for him and if Hendry trades Walker and doesn't get a SS, Neifi will be a regular.
  20. Only if LA eats about 1/3 of Furcal's contract. I'd only do the swap without money involved if the Cubs can throw Neifi in  I say fatten the deal and add in Macias too!!!
  21. I have no problem with Trot in RF, but not at 7.5 mil per year. He really hasn't gotten alot of chances against LH pitchers over his career, but I suppose that's because when he does, he hasn't shown he can handle them. The injuries are something I really have a problem with though - we just can't afford to sign another guy with that kind of injury history. He'd be an excellent plattoon RF if he was only making around 3-5mil per year and we could find a RH outfielder to play against the lefties. As far as Corey in Boston - all I can say is he better come out smoking or he'll think Chicago fans were a walk in the park!!!!
  22. I have a true respect for a player who does something unselfish like this!! If I were a Braves fan, I'd want to give him a standing ovation every at bat! It's not very often in this day and age of sports to hear of a "star" quality player thinking of an organization and something other than just himself. I won't be shocked if Furcal ends up back with the Braves - disappointed if it happens, but not surprised in the least. Chipper Jones = class act
  23. Then the Red Sox don't have to trade him. If he doesn't show up for spring training he's violating his contract. Red Sox might be able to void his contract. Let him sit out if he wants to. Not a bad strategy actually. Yup - they mentioned that as well as far as what Boston would do if Manny just simply refused to every show up, but they guess that instead he would show up as late as humanly possible and be a pain in the ass all season because he wouldn't turn down the $20 mil. Keep in mind too that if Manny were to just stay home and allow his contract to be voided Boston would besically be minus a starting left fielder at the start of the season and also have wasted any opportunity to replace him this offseason - the only upside is they would have $20 mil to spend, but nothing to spend it on until the 2006 free agent class at the end of the year.
  24. Put it in the FWIW column, but the sports jocks in Boston have been commenting that Manny wants out of Boston so badly that he may not show up at spring training - of course in the same breath they said they doubted very much whether he would sit out 2006 and pass up on $20 mil.
