    Revenue. Booster donations are way down because of the economy, so schools need to pay for sports programs how they can. Basketball is one of the few college sports that actually make money, so they need that revenue to pay for other sports. This gets more revenue to more schools, and doesn't negatively affect the teams involved in the tournament in any way. Well I'm sorry that the NCAA didn't realize they needed to fulfill your requirements of what benefits needed to be met, but I think "more revenue without much in the way of negatives" was sufficient for them. Increased revenue is a given. Obviously, that's why they're considering expansion, and it's why they'll do it, regardless of the public perception of the move. It's pretty obvious that, in this thread, people weren't debating the revenue benefits of expanding the tournament. They're debating how an expanded tournament affects the event itself. If you can't figure out the distinction between the two, you're kind of an idiot.

    mo' money (though possibly mo' problems) I meant an argument that shows how it improves the tournament as a sporting event and a championship event.

    I think totally rejiggering the schedule so that teams basically have to play every other day on the road to the Final Four is a horrible departure from the current format. Especially when doing so is purely the result of an effort to let a bunch of weak-ass teams in the tournament. And you haven't really made a compelling argument in favor of it the new format, either.

    Except as it stands now, only a handful of those crappy teams get in, not every single one of them. Like I said in another thread, we're talking about a 30 game season with schedules that are wildly different. The difference between at large #10 and at large #50 isn't really that great on a true ability level, which means the only difference in those play in games is in our perspective of the teams. First of all, I'm not sure i agree with that. Who was the #10 at large in the NSBB bracketology? And who would the #50th at large have been? And even if it is true, all we're doing is creating an extra round to ensure the right cannon fodder gets into the tourney. But one of the by-products of that is a week of condensed game play in the later rounds (when the teams that actually matter are playing.) As Parrish noted in his tweets, a one seed that advances will play Saturday-Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday to get to the Final Four. So basically, we're putting the teams that have an actual shot at this thing through a ridiculous, weeklong gauntlet to ensure William and Mary and Stony Brook get a shot in the tournament (and a chance to win 1, maybe 2 games.) Pass.

With all the slop the gets in now, it's barely a reward to get into it. Letting every team that didn't pull a total faceplant is counter to the whole idea of the tournament.

    There were like 30 automatic bids back then. It made some sense. Now you're paving the way for every Big 6 team over 500 to make the tourney. It's ridiculous. It wasn't even close to 30 auto-bids out of 32. What the crap are you talking about? He's saying that there was a time when you had to win your conference to be in the tourney, as only one team per conference was allowed. I think that lasted into the 70s. That left out highly ranked teams who had the misfortune of losing to teams that were better than them. this year, for example, there would have been no KSU or Baylor from the Big 12. No West Virginia (assuming we're using regular season conf champs.) No MSU or Ohio State. No Tennessee. There's no reason now to expand the tournament any further. Teams that will now make it have no reasonable shot at winning anything. Their inclusion will make what is now a borderline inflated field cumbersome, bloated, and unwieldy.

You know very well -- in fact, I think you've even mentioned it before -- that many of Duke's McDonald's All-Americans are such because they are committed to Duke, not because they're actually worthy (the same principle often applies to actual rankings, as well). Further, while it's hilarious to say "Duke hasn't been to the Final Four since 2004, ahahah" -- what a loser, he went five whole seasons without a Final Four -- Duke won 27-32-22-28-30 games over that stretch. Barnes has had four double-digit losses in the last six years, Coach K has had two since 1984 (not including the partial season he missed due to his back). I'd also argue Barnes has had more actual talent over the past six-eight years. This is a really stupid comparison and I'm going to stop now. You got me on your first point. All I can really argue with in this post is his ludicrous my team sucks so I'm getting back surgery and putting all the losses on this fall guy. [expletive] you K Yeah, i pretty much lost all respect for K after that.

    I think Butler in the title game has some viewing appeal. I'd be more likely to watch that than MSU vs either team.

    I'm not trying to knock Izzo because he's a great coach. But it's kind of a myth he does less with more. This team has a ton of talent. Most of his teams do. The bottom line is he has his teams ready to play when it counts. That's all that really matters. But they're not overperforming, imo. They were a preseason 2 for a reason. I think, from a talent perspective, he usually has one of the top teams in the country. Here's his top 9's scout rankings. Hardly the kids from Hickory. Lucas 4* (#5 PG) Morgan 4* (#11 SF) Allen 4* (#13 SG) Roe 5* (#4 PF) Summers 5* (#4 SG) Green 4* (#26 PF) Lucious 4* (#7 PG) Sherman 4* (#18 C) Nix 4* (#11 C) ETA: To be clear, I think Izzo is probably the best coach in the country. But he does it with Xs and Os AND elite level talent.

    That's what I am hoping. Not sure how this half of the bracket compares to the other half of Kentucky/Duke/WV/ and Baylor though. Gotta pull for a Butler/WV final. I'd root for Baylor if Scott Drew weren't such scum. No chance I can root for Cal and UK. Duke is Duke. You're a horrible person if you root for them (unless they play UK.)

    Heck of a game by Butler. K-State looked tired. But that was a nice run by KSU. And as much as it pains me, I really like Pullen. He's a good kid and a big time competitor. I hope Butler takes this thing all the way.

    Why would Howland leave UCLA for DePaul? I know UCLA had a rough year, but it's going to be a lot harder to win in the Big East with DePaul than in the Pac 10 with one of the top programs in the country.
