    It was a much different environment but teams like the Rockies (07) and Marlins (03), weren't great teams, but they were playing the best sustained baseball going into the playoffs. Obviously the Rockies lost and the Marlins won, the point is this Cubs team is capable of winning 11 to 13 games against any teams who make the playoffs; it's not that likely, though.

    They have painted themselves into a box b/c they have a formula that appears to produce good, not great teams by drafting and signing (in free agency) good, not great players who fit their formula. There is nothing necessarily wrong with the process, but it relies on positive outomes that are possible but slightly improbable. On the plus side, they have Josiah Hartshorn who looks like a true find and if he continues on his path is a game changer. They have some real potential in some of their starters so we will see. They have a set lineup for the next few years with room for catcher, RF, LF, and 1st base (potentially). They do not have much pitching certainty (who does?). So their top prospects or at least tradable for SP have no place to play. It puts them in a potenitally tough bargining postion. Jed and his team will need to be very creative to improve this team to move the margins from good to great. They should get into the playoffs. If that is the goal every year then their formula is working. I think we'd all like the bar set higher, but the ROI for guys like Jed and Tom isn't there. It will be interesting to see what they do this year, if anything.

    When he's throwing 103 on the corner with movement, all the motivation in the world won't matter. The main difference is that he learned how to throw strikes. If I'm the Cubs I approach every at-bat with location in mind and lay off anything not in that location until I have two strikes. Their only hope is to run up his pitch count.

    Is it time to be sellers if Cabrera’s injury is season ending? Realistically they have no shot, and it makes little sense to sell the future for a present that looks untenable

    Because you are selectively applying whatever criteria you think you have. RISP hitting is about the same as hitting without RISP across a career. The problem is you have a sampling error that you are turning into a skill or something.

    They aren’t a bad team. They are a Jed Hoyer production. It’s the same every year. on the plus side, there are only a handful of teams who are trying. The rest of the owners are waiting to get all the money after the next CBA.

    Since I stopped paying attention and watching/listening to games, they are doing better. I'm going to continue not paying attention or listening/watching games.

    Titanic and deck chairs? I don’t think so, but at the same time the Ricketts will find a clone. They’ve changed/overhauled the development team. I see that as a sign he’s here for the long term. Jed is a B-grade administrator who is a company man. He has to be to stay in his job. They could do a lot worse and only a little better. I would not shed a tear if they fired him (they won’t), but do not have any confidence the Ricketts would do better.

    Lorenzen lowered his ERA half a point last time he faced our Cobs.

    Neither. It's being pushed as some sort of equalization process for baseball, but there is no evidence that a salary cap produces a flatter field. In reality, it's a money grab by billionaires who don't want to share with millionaires.
