  1. the 49ers run D is very good, but they have terrible cover safeties and a poor OL in pass protection; sounds like the kind of team we should fare well against (and actually just did) i feel pretty good about our chances You should, but their OL talent and Frank Gore might give more trouble than you'd think to expect on offense. Oh and I've wondered this for a while...who are the good coverage safeties? It seems like every safety's weakness is in coverage, and it makes sense because then they'd be big CBs. Well OK...Rolle on the Giants...Reed and Polamalu...is William Moore any good out there? Malcolm Jenkins?
  2. Good trade for the Raiders. They really might be coming around... Anyway, Jets lose to the Dolphins this week. Schottenheimer gets fired.
  3. Yeah, Wilson is the Cubs' Pac Rim scout. I'll repeat myself - I think the Cubs will go after Taiwanese-born NPB lefty Wei-Yin Chen who is a true free agent (no posting). Steve Wilson was heavily scouting him in 2009 when there were rumblings he had an opt-out clause to leave Japan for the U.S. (he didn't have one then but he does for this offseason). There's actually a decent amount of video on this guy, and it's interesting. He really likes that fastball of his (can hit 93 maybe 94), and he cuts it and such too. He makes two talented LH SP FAs who use a blue glove. Not a bad target at all...repeats his athletic motion consistently too...looks like he used to throw a slow curveball but has since tightened it up into a slider he can bury in on righties...good mound presence for sure...from the maybe 10-15 minutes I just watched.
  4. Probably solid top 7 in regards to guys 20 and under, perhaps top 5. To be honest, outside of the "known" factor, I'm not sure there's a significant difference between Javier Baez's upside and Jeimer Candelario's upside, unless one thinks Baez has a shot to stick at short (just to be clear, I think Baez's upside is probably higher as he seems to have a higher power ceiling, just not sure it's significantly higher). Marco Hernandez, for me, is still ahead due to position and a year stateside seeing what he can do. Probably Baez's athleticism, as they're sticking with him at SS until he bombs there (which will probably happen). He's more likely to end up a MIF than Candelario.
  5. Great to hear about McNutt's velocity. He seems like a better candidate to remain a starter than Cashner, who might go the bullpen for a while before eventually going back to the rotation (maybe). There needs to be more good Austin Reed showings. Any word on how guys like Schlect and Trey Martin look out there?
  6. It never worked to buy the dutch first!
  7. Where would Candelario rank in the players younger than 20 inside the organization? With his strong K:BB and contact skills he sounds alot like the kind of guys the Cubs seem to do alright with lately. They're saying some power potential and then switch hitting to top it off? Who's the big name superstar comparison someone would say just to get some kind of reaction? Juan Pierre?
  8. Damn right. Does this mean I'm passive aggressively unpopular on the internet?
  9. Hasn't this pretty much been happening since Eric Milton with Cinci? I think he got 8 or 9, but he wasn't all that good and loved to give up HRs. Fun fact: Back when Triple Play was around Eric Milton was pretty nasty in that game. Then again so was Dave Burba...
  10. They don't have Theo anymore. I'd be surprised if anyone left in that front office knew what OBP was much less WAR. I lawld. Call me crazy but I think it's possible that Soriano is tradeable. He's way overpriced but he offers some RH pop and in a small LF he could probably get by defensively...I like to tell myself these things.
  11. Not to put water on the fire, but anyone who doesn't know JD Drew was a really good player is kind of a baseball idiot.
  12. For real? I feel like the media is eating this up. They have certainly overshadowed Robin Ventura and cut greatly into Bears discussion time on sports radio, but that may also have to do with their play. He's saying that the fans aren't as excited as he expected. It would probably help if it was official.
  13. I agree with this, though I think that Crawford's bad season is overblown. I think he can hit really well there once he starts using the wall more. He's actually got solid power the other way IIRC. I had dreams of a Soriano for Crawford swap. Soriano might actually do alright in Fenway's LF is what I said to myself. They'd get a couple of years of financial freedom and let a rangy LF in a rangy LF.
  14. Absolutely none, but so many hopes and dreams can be read. I can't celebrate until official...
  15. You're gonna jinx the whole thing man. Either way, very cool.
  16. Anyone else see that first inning coming from the second the ump called the first pitch to Furcal a ball? It that wasn't a strike then...W/e...I hope Milwaukee's lineup lays waste to Carpenter's pitches. BTW: I [expletive] hate that team but man the makeup of the Cardinals is consistently impressive. Of course this works because they have Pujols and Carpenter, but Pujols ad Carpenter are as tough as it gets too (Has anyone ever heard about Carpenter's routine to maintain his shoulder? NOT human)...And everyone feeds off of that and plays up...It's [expletive] impressive and its something I'd like to see in the Cubs one day soon. Oh and to be posi on the Cubs...I see that kind of makeup in DJ LeMahieu, which is why I'm such a big fan of this future non-superstar but solid something.
  17. I actually really, really like the talent of this guy. I would not trust him to be an ace, I wouldn't trust that on any IFA who signs to the big leagues in his 20's (culture shock, tougher competition, different mounds and balls). OTOH, I do think he can be a 2-3 starter capable of throwing up an ace-esque season or two. His stuff is excellent, so I have very few worries there. What separates him from other high end Japanese pitchers is 1. his age, 2. his height, 3. and his build (along with his height he's a very long and loose athlete). He's built more like an American pitcher than a Japanese pitcher IMO...and that's a big advantage for him. I also like that he seems to have more of an extroverted personality than guys like Matsuzaka for some reason...I guess because it's a clash with a stereotype. I do think he'll need some coaching to work on some mechanics, but otherwise I actually buy most of the hype on this guy. Anyway, money is a factor to me to a point. He'll cost a pretty penny, but if he's any good at all the Cubs will make that back fairly easily. I would not be mad to see this team in on the chase there. I'd prefer Wilson, but only because I know for a fact that Wilson can be a high end starter in the majors.
  18. I'm still heavily rooting for Randolph no matter who the GM is. I really like him with an Epstein/Beane/Cashman...basically a big name GM. Necessary post is necessary.
  19. Not confused, incredulous! I think/thought that more critical analysis for determining injury risk than "he was once a reliever, then he became a high IP SP, then they left him in for some of an inning he looked bad in after a rain delay. Injury risk just flew up!" It DOES make sense to say that...it's a fairly common train of thought nowadays I think...but risk assessment should go deeper/be a little more individualized than that.
  20. If it happens, nicely done RIcketts.
  21. He has nothing touching Harden's injury history. Does Wilson even have an injury history? He had TJ surgery 8 years ago and that's pretty much it... Other things: The reliever to starter change is nothing new, and his was not fully spontaneous. Wilson has wanted to be in the rotation since he came (as a starter btw), and is a pitcher known to keep himself in tip top shape for the day his chance came up. Given the state of Rangers' pitching before the late 2000's his getting a shot again was almost inevitable... He doubled his workload at 29 and 30, far safer ages to do that than say...21 to 22. He's come out with those pitch counts rising completely unscathed. Hell, he's come out from it a far better and more valuable pitcher than he's ever been. EVERYONE is a risk. Fielder to the layman is a tub of lard. Pujols to the layman is old. CC has been worked like a horse for a decade now. Justin Verlander threw 250 innings throwing really hard (imagine all the work his muscles and joints are doing!). Babe Ruth liked to eat, smoke, and drink. Mickey Mantle played through pain for most of his career (while smoking and drinking...or at least drinking). Ted Williams was an [expletive]. I can do this for anyone. Risk is inherent, and very easy to find if you're looking for it.
  22. And he's coming off 230 IP and 232 and counting so far this season. And he racked up those extreme innings with an arm that was absolutely not prepared to do it. Yet it did it? Absolutely not prepared? What?
  23. Glanville can write. He's also the only player who's 100% Trinidadian that I know of too, so he gets points for that. The big thing is that I heard he was one of the players who was really into the analytical part of baseball. I hope he becomes well known to the mainstream as a good baseball/former player.
  24. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Who considers this informative? Exciting? Anything but stupid?
