  1. aramis hasn't hit for [expletive] all year and is coming back after several days of not playing, so hey let's just throw him in the cleanup spot anyway.
  2. who cares he's 40 years old and uses steroids
  3. not a lot of pitchers worth $20M a year but he's definitely one of them.
  4. it doesn't make sense to carry four lefties (gorzo, marshall, grabow, russell) in the bullpen. who gets sent down? russell isn't that good but he's probably pitched well enough to hang around. grabow should go away but won't because of his contract. i guess it wouldn't surprise me if gorzo got sent to iowa and kept starting there.
  5. who was that on the mound today and what did he do with carlos silva?
  6. over the plate... just because you got a gift against lopez doesn't mean you'll get that all the time.
  7. man strikes two and three to lopez were awful calls. strike three especially, that was a good foot outside.
  8. now one time when it actually makes sense to bunt, and they don't do it. ok? maybe koyie blew the sign on pitch 1?
  9. after 10 years in the big leagues, i think it's unlikely that soriano will change what he is.
  10. there's a difference between throwing a good game and pitching a good game? what the [expletive] does that even mean, mccarver?
  11. why does jim belushi have to sing the stretch 5 times a year? just go away.
  12. can't believe the cards think mitchell boggs could be a future closer. he's terrible.
  13. that chunker had two triples in a game???
  14. the cubs are doing a nice job of getting around lou's overmanaging this half inning.
  15. i love that someone pointed out to lou that theriot has been horrendous for pretty much all of may, and lou continues to bat him at the top of the order. it's almost like lou is trying to lose games.
  16. therrible... but hey let's keep putting him at the top of the lineup even though he's gone 3.5 weeks without an extra base hit or a walk.
  17. more fantastic execution by our well-managed ballclub.
  18. neither of our middle infielders are hitting for [expletive] right now.
  19. i think it's funny that people started losing their [expletive] about boston collapsing. yes they lost game four and got beat pretty soundly in game five, but once they lost game four it was all about tonight. they had to win their home game. they did it pretty easily, on to the finals. i guess i have to root for them to beat the lakers.
  20. the point isn't that other teams break minor league starting pitchers into the bullpen before moving them to back to the big league rotation down the road, it's that those guys were full time starters throughout their developmental years. they had lots of innings to develop. cashner threw 100 innings last year and 74 innings in 2008 (54 of those from the TCU bullpen). it's just silly to compare a pitcher with so few innings to guys like lester, price, etc.
  21. yeah the main thing is having top two lines back and two top defense pairings. let's say they get rid of versteeg. they'll still have: buff-toews-kane ladd-hossa-sharp keith-seabrook campbell-hjarmallsson plus a third line of something like kopecky-bolland-brouwer. that's still a deep, young, talented team. sure it's nice to have really good checkers like madden but you can find defensively-responsible forwards for pretty cheap on the open market (the flyers got ian laperriere for $1m/year and blair betts was a non-roster invitee).
  22. i wouldn't say with any confidence that the wings will be healthy. holmstrom always misses a bunch of games and is old. rafalski and lidstrom (if he returns) are old; draper is old, kronwall and cleary always get hurt. it's an old roster with a number of injury-prone players. they can replace lidstrom with another d-man but they don't have big cap problems and the $7M cap hit isn't as big a deal as replacing his talent and leadership. the best d-men out there are probably niedermayer, gonchar, maybe paul martin? pretty far cry from lidstrom.
  23. oh i'm not downgrading him at all - he's one of my favorite sleeper prospects because everyone seems to agree that he has big league stuff, just spotty control. i do think he has a good shot at making the bigs as a setup man even if his control and changeup don't improve much from where they are now.
