  1. cobbling shoes or something in san pedro de macoris.
  2. no. it's stupid that it even gets brought up. if you're going to hand-wring about josh hamilton not being kept by the cubs in the rule 5 draft then you mineaswell just bitch about every awesome player that we passed on in the amateur draft and international free agency.
  3. the 2006 draft was God-awful and the cubs actually spent money on later picks to get them for well above slot money. if you're going to drop big coin on guys like huseby, cliff andersen, rundle and samardzija then you have to hold the scouting guy accountable when those players don't pan out. they weren't even close on the first three either; none of them even made it to AA.
  4. the never-ending josh hamilton debate makes me want to go on a josh hamilton-type cocaine binge.
  5. well i won't be the one you're bitching at when tim collects early first round picks this offseason.
  6. i already confiscated it
  7. yes i had some fuzzy math there. but ok, even if you take his two healthy seasons and throw out the injured one (which i don't think is totally fair, since he's old and will continue to get hurt), you've got him averaging 2 wins a year for 2010-11. that still pretty much sucks.
  8. i like that a lot more too, but i'd like for the line they start from to be a little closer or for them to have a couple of extra seconds.
  9. I don't get the Barney hate. Sure I love to see more OBP, maybe some pop but he's making the league minimum, plays good defense and hits .300 I would love to get more production out of 2B but with so many other glaring issues and aging/high priced turds with this club I'm not going to hate this kid. how many times has he hit .300 during the course of a minor or major league season? hint: the answer is not greater than zero. but what SSR was not "hating" barney. utility infielders have value. people hated theriot and wanted him to go away; nobody is sying that we should get barney off the team and replace him with whoever is lying around.
  10. if anyone's allowed to have leonys martin then i want him back, since i picked him up like a month ago and was told i couldn't have him.
  11. that'd be fine with me. you'd be getting better production at a cheaper price. but willingham should be more than $5m a year (though he'll potentially be undervalued because he's not a big name and is having a down year in oakland's cavernous confines).
  12. zambrano i can agree with, but not soriano. fangraphs has him worth 1 win per year over the last 2.5 years. baseball-reference has him worth a little less than that. you can pick up a corner OF out of the bargain bin and get something better than that for a couple mil a year. if you can get someone to take $18m a year for 3 years on a player who will probably be pushing replacement level, you have to do it. even if you run out and grab someone like josh willingham, you're likely to get better production for a cheaper price and can spend the savings on relief pitching or bench help or overpaying pujols or whatever.
  13. steelers announcers often just say "ben" when talking about the quarterback, but when doing PBP i can understand not wanting to always say roethlisberger.
  14. he walked again (making it 0-1 with 2 hbp, 2 walks) and then stole 2b, so ended up with the fun line of 0-1 with 4 runs and 5 SB. frankly if he's a fast guy and a marginal power hitter than i like the shift he made this year, making lots of contact, hitting for a high average, seeing a lot of pitches and running a lot. if some XBH power comes along, great. but his tools seem more suited to the speed game and i'd rather have him playing that way than trying to hit 15 home runs a year but ending up hitting .250 with not enough walks.
  15. he's going to be a fun one. my main question with him is whether he can keep getting on base a lot via the walk (or apparently getting hit by pitches too) when pitchers in the high minors and majors see that he doesn't hit for much power. and i guess also what position he will play since his main positions are 2b and cf, and we seem to have about 1000 prospects at those positions and no good prospects anywhere else.
  16. none of the multitude of potential 2b in our system can play adequate shortstop, and barney serves as good insurance in case starlin gets hurt or needs a day off. i guess you could always bite the bullet and hope that flaherty or lemahieu hit enough at ss to negate their bad defense there.
  17. i'm much more concerned about his horrific defense than i am about the strikeouts. fangraphs has him at 0.5 WAR because he's cost the o's about 19 runs on defense so far. i guess it depends on how much faith you put into those metrics, but the reviews of his defense have always been negative, so you sign him knowing that some of that run production is going to be negated by his lousy work in the field.
  18. found this, not sure if it's 100 percent accurate: top three are garbage, so is kouzmanoff, jones will almost certainly be retired, polanco may stay in philly for that price and if not, he'll be lousy and not worth it. reynolds comes with atrocious defense and a bucketload of K's, rolen will be an old man, teahen really isn't even a 3B, wigginton really is a utility guy. that leaves: izturis - kind of a polanco-ish cheap stopgap who can hit for contact and provide pretty good fielding. not an impact player and better suited in a utility role. wright - suspect he won't be on the option plan at that point - probably signed to a long term contract, either by the mets or traded and then signed by someone else. youkilis - almost certain to have that option picked up
  19. those are the free agents after this season.
  20. solid start for the guy who faced boise tonight:
  21. what was the injury? any word? They havent said anything and he didn't seem to be pointing out any particular part of his body. In fact, he didn't even really say anything. I would check twitter but twitter is dead right now for some reason yeah like half my facebook friends are huge phillies fans so i'm surprised my news feed hasn't exploded with roy halladay panic. guess it's probably just heat exhaustion or whatever.
  22. would that contract include the option to turn down the contract and go take a not-ridiculous offer from another major league team?
  23. i can't imagine that would work. he's guaranteed $2m if the cubs buy him out, so that would be the equivalent of signing a 2 year, $18 million free agent deal after a buyout. that would be a terrible deal for him coming off what seems to be a strong year where he's outproducing the average 3B pretty badly.
