  1. Lenny Dykstra. Not a lot of power, pretty good but not great speed, good patience, undersized, plays balls-to-the-wall. This comparison has been raised before, and it seems to be a very apt one. For every Lenny Dykstra there are hundreds of guys comparable to him who flame out in AA. Sam Fuld and Adam Greenberg being immediate examples that jump to mind. Chris Walker too, though he's got very good speed. Three guys drafted much lower than Payne will be.
  2. In the long run it is, but in terms of projecting a guy as a major-league talent, you like to see good peripherals. It's very early for him, but 11K/10BB and 30H in 25 innings is not impressive.

  4. The Eagles have also signed a bunch of scrubs who will never play for them.
  5. About 7 years ago, I was driving on I-290 around 10 AM in Worcester, Mass. when I came up on an incompetent road crew that decided to do some work in the left lane without setting up cones or anything. I came up on them really fast - you don't realize how fast a 60 mph car comes up on a stationary object - and I was able to get by them into the middle lane of the highway, but if there had been a car there, I probably would've had to hit it. I could easily see how this could happen without alcohol being involved... but we don't know either way right now.
  6. + I was at the Darryl Kile game and the class shown that afternoon has exhibited itself once again. I feel for Hancock's family and for the entire Cardinal organization, and I hope that they can cope with this as best they can. That being said, I hope the Cardinals don't win another baseball game for the rest of the year.
  7. The fact that he walked two batters at the end of his outing suggests to me that it was mechanical... he probably got sloppy with his mechanics as he tired and fell back into his bad habits.
  8. I agree, but I hope this isn't in reference to Vitters, because that's very premature
  9. That's simply not the case if he's used correctly. I don't understand why people seem so unwilling to believe this. I don't buy the situational pitcher notion - it causes teams to carry too many pitchers. I'd rather have guys who can - heaven forbid - get guys out from both sides of the plate. Yeah, and we don't have that many of them. Eyre can't seem to get anyone out. Nobody else from the minors is likely to offer much help. At least the Cubs have a guy who can get solid LH batters out, which is an important skill in the major leagues, provided you have a manager who knows what he's doing. Ohman's three-year splits: vs LHP: 165/274/286/559 vs RHP: 239/349/369/718 This year Ohman has not really pitched a whole lot, and his biggest problem has been control and allowing XBH's to RH batters. He's really not a bad pitcher. Ohman CAN get righthanded hitters out, but he's no better than average at doing so. On the other hand, he's quite good at getting out lefthanded batters. So he should be facing mostly lefties, but this year 60% of the ABs against him have been by RH batters. That goes on the manager, not the pitcher.
  10. Should scouts look for other things, like the ability to not swing at pitches outside the strike zone? Some probably do, but I think there's an attitude that they look for the tools and figure they can teach the discipline. But one would think, looking at the career of Corey Patterson, that it would be clear that lack of patience can torpedo a career of a toolsy player. Here's one evaluation I found: He sounds like a great talent and may turn into a great major league player, but I still think Wieters is the safer pick and is a good bet to turn into an above-average player in the bigs.
  11. He wasn't invited to the combine, but look at his pro-day results: Campus: 4.32 in the 40-yard dash:shock: … 2.48 20-yard dash … 1.46 10-yard dash … Bench pressed 225 pounds 15 times … 4.07 20-yard shuttle … 7.1 three-cone drill … 41½-inch vertical jump:shock: … 10-foot-11 broad jump … 32½-inch arm length … 9½-inch hands … Right-handed … 25/39 Wonderlic score. sounds like another workout warrior who can't play  I'd probably still take him over the QB the Eagles took in the second round. i'll trust andy reid over a random guy from louisiana

  13. Albenis Machado is now a spectacular 6-for-65 since joining the Cubs' organization last year.
  14. At this point in the draft, nobody's drafting for need. If there's a guy you think has the ability to play in the NFL, you grab him.
  15. Wow. Just checked that out and yeah, a seatbelt wouldn't have mattered. Holy cow that car was mangled. Hopefully for his sake, it was quick.
  16. miggy cabrera breaks it up with a 2-out double in the 7th. wonder who the last phillie to throw a no-no was... I'm gonna guess Tommy Greene, I know he did it versus the Expos in 1993, but I feel like there was one more recent than that.
  17. too bad for crosby... one day at the combine trumps four years of college football He's got a strong leg, but his accuracy was pretty bad in college too. He was only 11/20 outside of 50 yards. seems to me that's not that bad... Jason Hanson, kicking in a dome for more than half his games, is 30/63 in his career outside of 50 yards. Jason Elam is 36/59 Vinatieri 8/18 Josh Brown 10/17 Ryan Longwell 13/24 John Kasay 33/65 So I really don't 11/20 is bad outside 50 yards, especially after going 17/19 from inside 50 the most recent year.

  19. And the Eagles just picked... two random guys I've never heard of. Welcome to day 2 of the draft.
  20. Imagine reading something like that out of Dusty's mouth? I'd have had a heart attack. But anyway, he's right, and hopefully they have at least a few hitters who can take the coaching to heart and improve their discipline as the season goes on.
  21. I guess if it has to be an outfielder, I say send down Murton or if it's really a back injury, put him on the DL. Floyd and Ward have some value and can't be sent down without possibly being lost. BTW, if this were my club, I'd send Pie back down and go with Soriano/Jones/Murton&Floyd.
  22. I'm not sure you would want to do that. He was an amazing hitter off the bench last year, and it's obvious other teams fear him, considering that he's received 4 intentional walks to go with his 2 other walks. The 4 hitters who Ward was intentionally walked to get to-Soriano, Theriot (2 times), Barrett (Ward was pinch-hitting for Blanco, and so everyone knew that Barrett would pinch-hit for Izturis the next hitter, so I'm marking it as that). If teams are afraid to pitch to Ward, that can only help the Cubs. He's a decent bench option, but with how we utilize him he doesn't have a lot of value to the team. Just because he doesn't play a lot doesn't mean he's without value. He's a good pinch hitter and has good pop against RHP. I thought the Floyd signing was somewhat duplicative, but in close games it's nice to have two good bats off the bench with power potential against RHP. No, the real worthless player here is Cedeno. He is utterly worthless as a pinch hitter, and isn't even a particularly fast runner. If Izturis is available on the bench as a defensive sub in the middle infield, then there's zero reason to have Cedeno on this team.
  23. I'll take sample size for 500, Alex. You dont get it you know that. My point is Theriot is entirely batting average driven even compared to Cedeno and Izturis. Once his BABIP falls, and it will fall, he's pretty much the same as them. In fact for as "well" as he's hit so far, he's been CONSIDERABLY below average for a shortstop. Theriot had a very high BABIP last season too. Not saying that he will sustain a .360 BABIP, but he runs well and maybe he's quick out of the box. He also seems to hit have more hard-hit balls than Cedeno and Izturis. So maybe he's the type of player who can have a fairly high BABIP on a consistent basis, whereas Izturis has had a below-average BABIP for 5 of the last 6 years, and Cedeno was league-average last year (which is an indicator of just how bad he was - he wasn't even unlucky). And FWIW, I think Theriot will start walking more, since he has always shown the ability to walk in the big leagues. He's probably getting a lot of pitches to hit being at the top of the lineup, in front of hot hitters like Lee and ARam.
  24. whoa, whoa... WHOA. An overweight newspaper reporter? I don't believe it.
  25. andy reid was quoted as saying the eagles had kolb rated ahead of brady quinn
