    Something that I heard today was that Lackey wouldn't play under the $500k option. He'd retire/sit out, rather than play. Seems like a good decision for a 36 year old if he wants to make any money after next year. well, he'd better know that he's playing on at least two years beyond next year, and earning a pretty good salary (like league-average pitcher or better) in those extra years. it doesn't make sense for him to come back next year if he's not that interested in playing until he's about 40. or if his heart isn't in it next year, he sucks and then won't get paid when he hits free agency again.

    did the red sox not know that lackey would basically be free next year? they had better hope that allen craig remembers how to hit, or that is a God awful deal.

    it would be more interesting if cespedes had, say, 3 years left on his deal after this season. you're talking about 1 year of cespedes on a team that's still unlikely to be contending, versus several years of a guy who, if he gets near his ceiling, is a better player than cespedes. i can't imagine why anybody would vote for cespedes.

    davearm said things like aramis ramirez should spend more time practicing bunting, and defended putting aaron harang into a game to throw 50+ pitches on like 2 days rest because there was "no other alternative" (when the cubs just demonstrated last night one of the alternatives - putting a backup catcher in to pitch). davearm was wrong about nearly everything. he is not missed.

    Or we could try to correct those uninformed opinions. Let's not pretend that we don't enjoy when a meatball comes on here spouting ignorance and we all jump in to get our licks in. i think there's a big difference in the way that people are treated when they openly admit that they aren't really up on the latest metrics, but would like to learn. posters are a lot less hostile to those types than, say, the davearm2 types.
