  1. sounds like you need a divorce
  2. yes, but a player intentionally performing poorly for money on the biggest stage is not in the vein of Pete Rose, Ty Cobb or whatever other lowlife you want to throw in there. I agree that a player's actions off the field should not be considered, unless they do something like bomb the Statue of Liberty or turn into Ted Bundy. But I'm judging Ciccotte and Jackson as not worthy for the Hall because of their actions on the field - namely, throwing games for money on the sport's biggest stage. That, to me, is inexcusable.
  3. I was against the signing. If he helps take us to postseason glory, I'll conceed the point. But it's important to remember that there's still 3 1/2 more years on this contract at a pretty high price. That all being said, I'm really loving the way he's pitching right now. He's exceeded my expectations to this point by quite a bit. I think there might have been something to be said for getting him out of the AL East and all those appearances against Boston and New York. His BB/9 is way down this year, and it helps to get him away from those patient teams that lead baseball in walks every year. He perhaps has been slightly lucky with batted balls and percentage of fly balls that leave the park, but for the most part his strong ERA and WHIP this year can be attributed to him pitching really well. Perhaps it's possible that Rothschild has helped him be a little more consistent with his release point, but whatever happened, his walk rate has been sliced in half. That's the real reason for his success.
  4. now i'm reading about how i didn't want to sign schmidt to a long, expensive deal because of all the PAPs (yay truffle!) but was okay with the rumored 3 year, $44M deal because I figured he wouldn't break down right away (boo truffle)
  5. there were a lot of prominent posters who were quite sour on signing lilly. I'm not naming names... just going back to read the thread for entertainment purposes. I was middle-of-the-road... not thrilled with Lilly, but glad we signed someone with durability (knock on wood) and a track record of being at least a solid pitcher, which we didn't have last season. Going back and reading those old threads - especially to laugh at the know-it-all armchair GMs who present their opinion as gospel - is a great time.
  6. can that even be right? my goodness, this is a big market major league team...that's pathetic. that'd be hilarious if this were the 2006 cubs and all you can do is laugh at them... unfortunately this team is actually pretty good, so it's just depressing. I guess we can feel good that the ineptitude of our catchers hasn't put us out of the playoff race.
  7. Eddie Ciccotte wasn't that great... and I'm not so sure that guys who intentionally tank the most important games in the sport deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. That's crossing another line, IMO.
  8. very good day... cubs win, and all but the d'backs and phils lose
  9. sweet, the second coming of johnny bench strikes out
  10. make an out, saltalamacchia
  11. There are too many damn teams in the WC hunt. Even the crappy D'backs and Rockies are within 3.5 of San Diego.
  12. NL Central MIL 56-45 --- CHC 53-46 2.0 STL 45-52 9.0 NL Wild Card: SDG 54-46 --- CHC 53-46 0.5 ARI 55-48 0.5 ATL 54-48 1.0 PHI 52-48 2.0 COL 51-50 3.5
  13. All times Central: 11:35 AM: Brewers - D. Bush (8-8, 4.83) @ Reds - B. Livingston (2-1, 3.52) 12:05 PM: Nationals - M. Bacsik (3-6, 4.39) @ Phillies - A. Eaton (9-6, 5.84) 5:05 PM: Braves - B. 14. ](*,) Koyie Hill is a bad hitter! Soto isn't. If you're going to split time, at least call up Soto and send down Hill.
  15. darn, murton K's and Soto lines out in the 9th, so they won't be padding their stats again tonight. By the way, Mike DeJean pitched the 9th for the Rockies. They have him and Dave Veres on their team... who's next, norm charlton?
  16. ryan howard hits a walkoff BOMB... phils win in the 14th
  17. how is he still employed? who knows... he's just awful. I remember earlier in the year they had a late-game situation where they had a righty reliever in against Jock, and a lefty reliever ready in the pen. He stuck with the righty and Jock hit a 2-run double. It was the easiest lefty-lefty decision in baseball history, and he didn't make it. I really think the Phillies would be the best contender for the wild card if they had a real manager.
  18. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opportunity_cost Kevin Goldstein ranks Soto as the third-best catching prospect in the minors. Mid-season ZIPS projections predict Soto would outhit Kendall for the rest of the year. By trading for the second-worst catcher in all of MLB this year, the Cubs forgo the opportunity to give Soto at-bats. where do you get the mid-season ZIPS projections?
  19. Soto has more XBHs tonight than the rest of our catchers do in like a month. His OPS is up to 1.021 now... hopefully he can get another AB tonight and go for the cycle!
  20. phillies keep getting 2 or 3 guys on base and then blowing it... in classic charlie manuel mismanagement, he's out of position players and forced to pinch hit with a pitcher when the bases are loaded and only one man down.
  21. that's only this year.... last year he was fine on the road, and 2 years ago he was lights out. He's been one of the better middle relievers in baseball. It's a good pickup for the Brewers, but they had to pay a pretty steep price in Inman. So was Scott Eyre. yeah that's pretty much a terrible comparison. Linebrink was very good for three straight years... Eyre was mediocre every year of his career except one.
  22. honestly if this is all we're gonna use eyre for, then he has to go if wood gets healthy/effective.
  23. pretty true, but iowa still has the best offense in the league.
  24. someone remind juan encarnacion that he's not good.
