  1. f*** you mets... God i hate that team/stadium/city
  2. nice pitching white sox... 8 home runs?
  3. i knew it was a good thing when i got home and saw charlie manuel waddling out of the dugout
  4. in one statistic (albeit an important one) How 'bout 6 of 14 in BA okay so now we're delving into the unimportant statistics. Shall we head along to stolen bases? I already did, in terms of unimportant, Henderson waves hello Rickey Henderson wasn't great because he stole a lot of bases... he was great because he put up a career .401 OBP and a 127 OPS+ from the leadoff spot (!)

  7. I don't think you're understanding what a double cut is. Tell me, what is a double cut? A double cut is when both middle infielders go out and one of them receives the throw. For the play in question, DeRosa and Theriot both got into position to receive a throw from Murton, with some space between them. There's been a good deal of debate on the exact purpose in the thread, but the point is that one of them receives the throw from Murton. A double cut means Murton to DeRosa or Theriot to the plate, not Murton to DeRosa to Theriot to the plate. yeah you only need two cutoff men if Pierre and Jock Jones are involved in the play.
  8. .273/.327/.399/.726 is the average line for ALL shortstops, including backups, so those numbers are going to be down a bit from the average starting SS. Theriot is at .282/.349/.370/.719 So yes his OBP is probably a little above average for a starting SS, but his power is definitely lower. All in all, he's not a terrible option with the numbers he's put up this year. Power is very over rated, especially for a number 2 hitter. Power is not overrated, except in OPS, where it weighs too much. But OBP is the more important of the two statistics. Still, I think the bigger holes are in the OF. In RF, the Cubs have the 22nd OPS in baseball, but the 28th SLG, which is really not good from a position that is supposed to provide some pop. In CF, the Cubs are 24th in OPS and have a miserable .301 OBP. And of course at catcher, the Cubs have a horrendous .597 OPS, which is 27th in the league. This includes a .205 BA (!!!) and a .268 OBP. So yeah, I do wish we had a better SS. But there are three other positions on the team which are bigger problems.

  10. i'll be interested to hear whether the cubs were limited in how much payroll they could take on next year or in future years. If they couldn't take on future money, then a Griffey deal was never really viable.
  11. One of the big reasons that Fontenot's numbers look so good in the 2 spot is that he was put there when he was hot, and as soon as he started to cool they moved him further down the lineup. That's going to lead to a distorted picture of that spot in the lineup. x2, I don't understand why everyone thinks Theriot sucks, he's proved he can run the bases, hit the ball, and field his position(SS). What else is there for him to do? Rob homerun balls? well he has almost no power. But as the team is constructed, he's the best option at SS and should be playing there pretty much every day.
  12. Right, but isn't the real deficiency in how the team was built before the season? . Again, I'm not interested in letting Hendry's past failures be the excuse for not being able to fix them. okay, then thoughts on the rest of what i wrote? (the problem with trading the young, almost-ML-ready talent on the team)
  13. yeah unfortunately PECOTA doesn't make the playing time decisions on the Cubs... maybe we can just replace Piniella and Hendry with a robot, can't do any worse really
  14. Right, but isn't the real deficiency in how the team was built before the season? At this point, if you're trying to build the best team you can - which means not just for now but also for the future - you don't go dealing off guys like Pie, Marmol, Patterson, Hill and Marshall for rentals whose contributions may be rather dubious (i.e., Dye). Given that the Cubs have some big contracts now (Lee, ARam, Soriano, Lilly, Marquis, possibly Zambrano), they're really going to need some young pre-arbitration talent to contribute between now and 2011.
  15. Well Rajai Davis is basically nothing, and the PTBNL isn't much, but still - why, if you're a team with very limited payroll resources, are you trading for Matt Frickin Morris?
  16. That seriously is the most ignorant statement ever. How did Milwaukee get better, Scott Linebrink? Have you forgotten that we have been consistently gaining on them for 2 months? My God. I am fairly certain they are still ahead of us even with there best pitcher on the dl. When he gets back there lead will go up again. They are a game ahead of us. Not long ago it was 8.5 games ahead of us. Notice a trend here? A middle reliever will not stop that trend from continuing. The Brewers are a horrible baseball team away from their home park. They are not a playoff caliber team, and a middle reliever won't help that, especially since any good he does for the team will be washed away when Cordero blows it for them. I'd argue that this is more a circumstance of luck and strange chance than of any real road deficiency on their part. Same with their unusually good home record.
  17. everybody stop being idiots and getting every "random cubs/trade discussion" thread locked
  18. If we're older and expensive, then we're trading good young talent to improve the team. That basically gives this team a one-year window to win a championship, and oh by the way there are a lot of other really good teams (a.k.a. American League) who we'd have to beat to win. If you don't do it, you've got an old team with no major-league ready prospects and you've just thrown a few more years into the crapper.
  19. maybe glavine should try pitching righthanded to braun
  20. i don't know how it happened that 95% of this board is having its period at the exact same time
  21. What were they gonna do? Trade Pie? People mad Trade Marmol? People mad Trade Murton? People mad, but not as many. Yeah the biggest problem is that the lower levels are practically devoid of good prospects, so realistically, the Cubs were going to have to deal of a piece of the current team or of next year's team to get somebody.
  22. For the Cubs? No. I still haven't found additional confirmation about Dae-Eun Rhee either. Also, RHP Chen Hung-Wen (the 22-year old Taiwanese native who got a $200,000 bonus) is injured and out with a sore elbow. that didn't take long
  23. Not really a great return, IMO. Murphy looks like a 4th outfielder to me, and Gabbard is probably being overrated due to his strong performance the past few weeks. Engel Beltre was a big int'l signing, but he's a long, long way from the bigs.
