    I don't know, but if the Cubs trade JJ they will need to get a slugger or a high OBP guy for SS or CF. The angle I'm seeing is that they'll trade Jones for some pitching, then turnaround and sign Lofton and Trot Nixon (Mr. Miles' pick). Soriano will play RF, Lofton in CF and Nixon and Murton platoon in LF. That would be a terrible, terrible offensive team. Soriano will play RF, Lofton in CF and Nixon and Murton platoon in LF. I don't know what Trot's salary demands are, but he'd be a better pick-up right now than Cliff Floyd in my opinion. Cliff would have been fine in a Sosa deal 2 years ago.

While I do believe the Cubs are focusing very hard on trading Jones, I don' think they'll do a garbage deal like the Rotoworld rumor suggesting Rodrigo Lopez.     Supposedly, Maddux and Hendry parted on good terms in July. Though still somewhat improbable, with Piniella now in town, Maddux coming back to the Cubs is no longer impossible in my opinion. In fact, if the Padres, Giants or D-Backs don't grab him in the next week or so, I could see Hendry re-signing Greg to a 2-year $20M deal.

    I heard Bruce this morning on ESPN radio AM 1000 at 7:40 AM CST talking about these guys: Craig Counsell Randy Wolf It was the first time I had seen or heard or read either of these names with respect to the Cubs. Counsell would be used as a utility IF (isn't that Theriot's job?), and Wolf would be in the rotation if Meche or Lilly can't be signed. Hoops

    I'm on board with that idea. I just took a look at the potential free agent shortstops after the 2007 season. The list isn't pretty: ARod could opt out. True. But it would be tough for him to walk away from a guaranteed 3 years and $81M, don't you think?

The list isn't pretty: Carlos Guillen David Eckstein Omar Vizquel Neifi Perez John McDonald Ramon Martinez Michael Young (team option) Cesar Izturis (team option) Juan Uribe (team option) The Rangers will probably pick up Young's option - it's pretty cheap. And Guillen will probably move to 1B in 2008 - it might have even happened for 2007 had the Tigers not re-signed Sean Casey. Vizquel is still productive, but getting up there in the years. Julio Lugo is probably better than the rest of those guys on the list. The Cubs do have a hole at SS starting in 2008 if they don't pick up Izturis' option, which we all should hope they don't. Signing Lugo makes a lot of sense to me. He's your SS for 2 or 3 years starting in 2008 - in 2007 he plays CF or SS depending on what the Cubs do with Izturis. Boston and Toronto look to have openings at SS.

    If it was up to me, I'd focus on the Giants, Dodgers, Padres, Astros and Red Sox - they all seem to be in the market for a corner outfielder. Maybe the Angels too if they decide to DH Vlad or Garret full time.

    I still see plenty of room to make moves. If little else happens, I'll hate this contract. But I see more coming. If Hendry can somehow swing a trade for an OBP machine who will be in the everyday lineup, it'll ease the sting of this bad contract. Sor does provide some SLG which will be nice, but with him batting first we won't even make the most of that punch. I think Hendry should call Kevin Towers and find out what it would take to get Brian Giles here. Giles would look great in the #2 hole. Giles has 2 years and $18M; Jones has 2 years and $11.7M. If the Cubs gave up a good pitching prospect or 2 fair ones in addition to Jacque, SD might be convinced it's a good deal. It would free up some additional payroll for them to go after Zito or Bonds.

    If the payroll is now $120M, they should be able to get him. If it's still in that $110-115M range, then it would seem they would need to dump 2 of the following 4 salaries for some margin: Dempster, Eyre, Jones and Izturis. For argument's sake, I am assuming Barrett and Howry are going nowhere.

    From Mr. Miles' point of view, yes, unless he's dealt. My gut tells me that Hendry is exploring trades for Jacque with NL West and AL West teams - Jacque had indicated a month ago that if dealt he'd prefer a West Coast team. Maybe the Mariners, A's, Giants, Dodgers, Angels or his home-town Padres would be good fits.

    Here's what Mr. Miles wrote: "When the deal is announced, it will be stunner. Soriano is expected to receive a contract of eight years and worth up to an estimated $135 million, based on how much money is deferred." Notice the "up to an estimated" phrase and the infamous word "deferred." It's hard to tell what the real numbers are - I'm sure Mr. Miles will give us more clarification after the physical is done, and the deal becomes official.

Mr. Miles writes that the Cubs envision Soriano leading off and playing RF, with Jacque moving to CF. I still personally think they're going to move Jones to an NL West or AL West team. I'm not seeing moving him to Cleveland as part of a package to get Westbrook, but that's just my speculation.

    Let's say Drew were to end up with the Angels or Orioles, and the Cubs sign Lugo. Do you think Boston would be interested in a deal for Jacque, Cesar and one of the 2 relievers? That's around $13-14M in payroll, maybe the Cubs would have to pick up $3M. Soriano to RF, Murton in LF. Then the Cubs could trade Barrett and a few pitching prospects to Toronto for Wells.

    Hoops, get on this- i mean, do you realize how important you are to all of us this time of year- GET ON THE HORN and get some info:)- Seriously though, you are hearing 2 and 30M? i would be open to that deal with an option year tacked on- It does appear that the Cubs are very active in this Drew bidding. I too would much prefer him over Soriano, if forced to choose. I'd offer 3 years and $40 million - $12M, $13M and $14M with a $15M option, which can automatically vest with an appropriate amount of games played in 2009 or a $1M buyout.

My question is which Boston offer has Hendry supposedly matched? Is it the 4 year $48M we were hearing yesterday, or the 2 year $30M I'm hearing today? It's getting mighty interesting.

    I think it was Ken Rosenthal, who said last night after the DeRosa signing that the Cubs looked like they were trying to package a young pitcher, either Cedeno or Theriot and Jacque Jones to get a corner OF with power. Something does seem up. If his name is Miguel Cabrera I'll be a happy camper. I was thinking Burrell, but they don't really need a middle infielder. Boston for Manny?
