Today's portion of the draft, which will include rounds 3 through 10, will begin at 1 p.m. CT.

Keep up to date with the Cubs Draft Tracker.

    A quick recap from yesterday:

    1 (14) - Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State
21 years old. 6-3, 224. #18 on the Consensus Big Board
    Draft Article / Draft Tracker

    2 (54) - Cole Mathis, 1B, College of Charleston
20 years old. 6-1, 210. #68 on the Consensus Big Board
    Draft Article / Draft Tracker

3 (90) - Ronny Cruz, SS, Miami (FL) Christian School
    17 years old. 6-2, 170.

4 (120) - Ty Southisene, SS, Basic (NV) HS
19 years old. 6-0, 215. #159 on the Consensus Big Board

Southisene is a prep hitter out of Nevada. While it's an undersized frame, there's a lot to like about a solid all round profile, particularly offensively. Southisene has an above-average hit tool that may become plus in time. It's excellent bat to ball skills, combined with good manipulation and a discerning eye at the plate. He can hit for some power to the pull side but this will likely only grade out as fringe average when its all said and done. There's above average foot speed and a solid glove and arm in the profile, too. Southisene is likely to end up somewhere in the dirt, most likely second base long term. He's currently committed to the University of Tennessee. - Consensus Big Board

    5 (153) - Ariel Armas, C, San Diego
    21 years old. 6-0, 185.

6 (182) - Ryan Gallagher, RHP, UC Santa Barbara
    21 years old. 6-3, 195.

7 (212) - Ivan Brethowr, OF, UC Santa Barbara
21 years old. 6-6, 250. #256 on the Consensus Big Board

A product of the same Kansas high school that produced former first-round fireballer Riley Pint, Brethowr provides more proof that they grow them big in that part of the country. The 6-foot-6 slugging outfielder began his college career at Arizona State, but after getting limited playing time as a freshman in 2022, he transferred to UC Santa Barbara and earned All-Big West First Team honors as a sophomore. He hasn't taken a big step forward in his junior season but he does provide a power bat possibility in the middle rounds. One of the most physical hitters in the country, Brethowr offers serious raw power from the right side of the plate, with some scouts thinking there might be 70 raw pop in his bat -- and it does show up to his pull side. Whether he can get to it consistently remains the question. While he's cut his strikeout rate down considerably this year, he continues to show a little bit of a slow trigger with the bat, and there could be more production unlocked with some swing adjustments. In the past, Brethowr has run well, especially for someone his size, but some lower-half injuries have slowed him down and he's likely to keep trending in that direction as he matures. He's limited to an outfield corner and has the raw arm strength to fit there. The team that takes him on Day 2 will be hoping it can maximize his power potential. - MLB.com

    8 (242) - Edgar Alvarez, 1B, Nicholl State
    23 years old. 6-4, 225. (5th-year senior)

    9 (272) - Brooks Caple, RHP, Lamar
    21 years old. 6-6, 230. (Senior)

    10 (302) Matt Halbach, 3B, San Diego
    21 years old. 6-3, 215.

One would think that they have enough saved to pop a pretty big name, no?

Depends. Wetherholt could have been asking the moon. He was in consideration at 1.1, after all.

Dang.  Red Sox popped Cason in the 8th.  I really like that kid's upside.

Edgar Alvarez did have an 1.192 OPS at Nicholls stat. 18.4BB%, 11.11k%, .405/.514/.678 slash.

Also they didn't have a comp or 2nd rounder, so the magnitude of savings beyond potentially Wetherholt(who has decently strong leverage at 7) only adds up to so much.

Safe to assume Carson Wiggins is going to school at this point?

Definitely feels like they're saving money for someone.  Not sure if they're popping someone fun in the 11th or maybe Cam Smith required more than slot, but I'd be very surprised if these guys ranked outside of the top 200-300 aren't collectively well under slot (even if one or two of them aren't).

Remember when the Cubs only drafted SS's?

Now, they only draft corner infielders who are unlikely to stick at any position outside of 1B/DH.

9th rounder is RHP Brooks Caple, Lamar (a senior).

10th rounder is 3B Matt Hallbach from UCSD

Halbach seems like more fun than your average 10th round college pick.  Hit really well in the Cape but missed most of the college season (I'm assuming due to injury).  Also he makes 3 Big West signings in 10 picks with the UCSB guys.

I was going to say the same thing, and add that he doesn't look like a guy who would take underslot.  Cubs really do love them some Cape Cod performers.

Don’t really understand this draft. Appear to be many underslot picks. But for what? For who? Or are the Cubs now going to go cheap in the draft? That was never a concern since Theo got here. But after seeing these picks, who are they spending the money on. It does not appear the publications who do rankings agree with most of the guys the Cubs picked. To be clear, I don’t know any of those guys. I am just basing my comment on how many are either not ranked in the top 500, or are picked way before where they are ranked. Maybe 1908 or someone else who really follows theee guys can explain why it appears the Cubs too so many guys way before they were projected.

Yeah, it's clearly a draft where the braintrust does not agree at all with the public rankings.  I wonder if Southisene is going to be taking a bunch of the overslot funds.  Tennessee just won the NC and I could see it costing a fair bit to buy him out.

They were picking mid-round without any extra picks in what has generally been seen as a mediocre draft overall.  I didn't come into today with high hopes, but I actually didn't mind that they targeted EVs and swing speed guys, since this system hasn't exactly been great at churning out power bats,

It's possible they pop someone like Wiggins or Franco tomorrow to spice things up, but we'll see.

from a names standpoint, it's very high quality. Cam Smith and Brooks Caple are HOF type names

Let's get on the interwebs and search for good things about these kids so that we can convince ourselves that it wasn't that bad of a draft

what were you expecting? Seems like the Cubs targeted players they believe may develop. Couldn't really expect a bunch of known superstars.
