I don't think the Cubs want any part of Manny's contract, especially since most of you are pointing out what a burden the contract is for the Red Sox. Also, if a good team like the Red Sox are trying to get rid of Manny and his contract, why would a mediocre team (Cubs) want Manny and his contract. With the money and prospects you are giving up for Manny, you could fill 2-3 holes on the Cubs. He is an outstanding hitter, but no thanks.

This is an absolute no brainer. YES, YES, YES, YES!!!!

When I think of Manny, I don't think about LF defense...........I think RBI MACHINE!!!! And let's not get into the whole "no player is worth that much money, deal!" If one, or two players in the league are worth it, Manny's one of them. Think of the jersey sales alone for this guy. I think how marketable a player is, is sometimes forgotten when talking about a players contract. Look at it another way, how much more revenue would Ramirez generate for the Cubs? I think he's one of those players that between his production and your increase in product sales..........is well worth the money.

It's like making a movie and saying do I want Tom Hanks and pay him 30 M, or am I going to get Kenneth Branagh because he's cheaper..........

I'll take Tom Hanks anyday of the week because I know his name alone on the marquee with the name of my movie will make me a profit.

Anyway, I'll take Manny Ramirez in a second. NO QUESTION!!!!

I think it would be rather easy to acquire Manny if we so desired. The Red Sox would love to be rid of that contract. For what they're paying Manny they could sign Burnett and Giles and still have some left over.

How much could we get them to eat, though? If we got them to eat, say, 7 million per year or so of the approx $20 million per year or so he's due, what would we have to give up?

And if we can't get him and get Boston to eat anything, then get Burnett and Giles like he said.

Well, I know he didn't say we should get them, but I do. So there.

I'm not absolutely certain on this, but I think Manny is owed ~$64 million for the 2006, 2007 & 2008 seasons. I've also heard that he is close to becoming a 10/5 player (10 years in the big league, 5 with the same club) which means he has the ability to veto any trade.

Boston certainly has an incentive to trade him and lose that contract - especially if they should decide keeping Damon is a priority.

If you look at the rumored deal the Red Sox had going with TB and the Mets, the Mets were willing to take on ALL of the remaining contract and give them Cameron and I believe 2 minor leaguers (one of which was a former #1 pick) and they would also have gotten Aubrey Huff. I'm not certain the Cubs have the talent to work a deal like that with Boston.

That said, I'm fairly convinced that Manny will not be with the Red Sox next year and I'd guess the Mets are the first time that will be knocking on the Red Sox door after the season is over trying to work something out. If the Cubs could do it however, I would be very happy to have Manny in LF for the next few seasons. The Tribune has the money to put together a winning team and the fans (God help us) have deserved it for a very long time. Manny would certainly be a key offensive addition and it would take alot of the pressure off kids like Patterson and/or Cedeno to try to put up big numbers.

I'm assuming if he's put on waivers at the end of the year that the claims work the same? Which in theory means the Cubs would be able to claim him before the Mets......................I don't know exactly how that works, but at $60M/3YR, I'll take Manny. I may sell $60 in jerseys when it's announced he's a Cub.

It just seems like Manny is eactly the sort of presence thislineup deperately needs. If we are going o be stuck w/ Dusty, might as well force some guys on him who understand patience at the plate and have high (or in Manny's case, enormous) OPS.

I know: the dead horse called, and he wants me to stop beating him.
