Iowa Breaks Through With Four In The 10th At Toledo

James Triantos led off the game with a home run, Iowa spent the next eight innings chasing the lead back, and a four-run 10th inning finished off a 7-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens. Triantos drove his eighth of the season to left center, and that run stood alone until the Mud Hens moved ahead.

Trei Cruz and Chris Meyers singled, and Max Burt lined a two-run single to center for a 2-1 Toledo lead. Iowa answered in the ninth. Jackson Cluff was hit by a pitch, Justin Dean came on to run, and Jordan Nwogu singled. Ethan Hearn then ripped a single to center to tie the game.

Chas McCormick followed, reaching on a fielder's choice, and a fielding error let Nwogu score for a 3-2 lead. Toledo tied it again in the bottom half on a wild pitch. In the 10th, zombie runner Triantos moved to third on a pair of walks, Greg Jones walked to force in the go-ahead run, and Dean cleared the bases with a double for a 7-3 lead.

Jordan Wicks opened for Iowa and gave up two runs over five innings, walking one and striking out six. Antoine Kelly allowed a run in one inning and earned the win. Shelby Miller, Hoby Milner, Ethan Roberts, and Tyler Ferguson combined for four innings without a run. Dean finished 1-for-1 with three runs batted in, Triantos went 2-for-5 with two runs, and Ben Cowles collected his 21st double.

Knoxville Drops A 4-3 Decision At Pensacola

Knoxville led early, watched the game turn on a three-run fifth inning, and could not complete the comeback in a 4-3 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Leadoff hitter Kane Kepley started the game with a walk, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Miguel Useche line drive to center for a 1-0 lead.

Pensacola tied the game in the fourth on a Dillon Lewis triple, then took control in the fifth. Ethan O'Donnell opened the inning with a home run, Fenwick Trimble followed with his 15th of the season, Juan Matheus doubled, and Brandon Compton singled him home for a 4-1 lead. Knoxville answered in the sixth. Useche drew a walk, and Edgar Alvarez pulled a two-run homer to right field, his 10th of the year, to make it 4-3. That was the last run the Smokies would get.

Brooks Caple carried the bulk of the work for Knoxville, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings with no walks and one strikeout. Both Pensacola home runs came against him. Ethan Flanagan followed with two hitless innings and three strikeouts, and Vince Reilly added a hitless inning with two strikeouts. The two relievers retired all nine hitters they faced.

Knoxville managed four hits and five walks. Kepley walked three times and scored a run, Useche went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, and Ariel Armas and Carter Trice each singled. Alvarez accounted for both Smokies runs batted in.

South Bend Rallies Past West Michigan For A 4-3 Win

South Bend trailed by three runs with nine outs left, then took the lead an inning at a time in a 4-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps. Pierce Coppola opened the game with five hitless innings, walking two and striking out seven, and the Cubs carried a scoreless tie into the sixth.

Cristian Santana singled, Jackson Strong walked, and Bryce Rainer drove a three-run homer to right center for a 3-0 Whitecaps lead.

The Cubs got two of those runs right back. Leadoff hitter Josiah Hartshorn homered to right field for his 15th of the season with South Bend.

Angel Cepeda followed two batters later with a home run to left, his sixth. That cut the deficit to 3-2, and the score held into the eighth.

Logan Poteet started the eighth with a double, and Justin Stransky came on to run. Hartshorn lined a single to right to tie the game, Jose Escobar singled to center, and Cepeda grounded a single through the left side to bring Hartshorn home with the go-ahead run. Yoendris Gonzalez closed it out with two hitless innings and three strikeouts to earn the win.

Hartshorn finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in, and two runs scored, and Cepeda went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. Nate Williams allowed three runs on three hits over two innings with two walks and four strikeouts. South Bend pitching struck out 14 and held West Michigan to three hits.
