WTF is with WAR?

So... I'm a n00b and I don't know much about WAR. I would like someone to explain to me these two lines from Chris Coghlan:

 

2009  FLA 128 	504 	84 	162 	31 	6 	9 	47 	53 	77 	8 	5 	.321 	.390 	.460 	.850 	0.9

2010  FLA 91 	358 	60 	96 	20 	3 	5 	28 	33 	84 	10 	3 	.268 	.335 	.383 	.718 	1.0

 

Why is his WAR higher in his second year when his numbers were better all across the board in his first year? Is it because the replacement level was that much better in 2010?

For starters, stop using ESPN for your stats and start using Baseball-Reference or Fangraphs. Fangraphs is 2.7 and 0.9 for those two season and B-R is 1.0 and 1.1.

 

Either way, Derwood is probably right as both B-R and FG listed his defense as substantially better in 2010 than in 2009.
