you guys have it right on the minor leaguers.

As far as the prospect draft goes, having it after the June draft is fine - seems like we did that before. The problems we had was with players not being in the database and then losing track of who was on a team already. After the signing deadline might work better.

You absolutely have to wait for the signing deadline (which is ~July 15th this year).

i prefer to have it when it is now - that way you've got all the prospect lists published, some prospects have been dealt during the offseason, other guys have gotten hurt between the signing period and end of the year, plus there are some international free agents who are signed during the offseason.

maybe we could just start it around the start of spring training? as it is we weren't too far off from finishing by the start of the regular season... just the weird start in japan held us back. and we should probably have and enforce a 24 hour rule (for both the major league and minor league drafts) so that if you don't pick in 24 hours, you're either skipped or you autodraft. if you know you're going to be away for a period of more than 24 hours when the minor league draft is running, just PM a list of prospects to someone who doesn't have a pick before your turn and they can make the pick for you.

side note, someone raised the idea of an online draft for the major league phase, and i would definitely oppose that. there's about a 0% chance of getting all 16 owners present for all or most of the time it would take to do 10 or more rounds. if we start the offline draft about a month before the start of the regular season and set a 24 hour clock, we'll definitely be done before the regular season starts, and probably with at least a week to spare.

I am assuming "you guys" means me (and the others like me). So that once the prospect draft is over I can replenish my minor leagues, but I can't pick up anyone drafted in June and/or any international signees who sign after our prospect draft. If that is correct, we need to word-smith our bi-laws so that other new owners are not confused.

I would also argue to have our prospect draft at this time of year. I think that the majority of us rely on BA's (and other) top prospect lists to do our prospect drafting. Right now the lists are more fresh and therefore more accurate. Without these lists, our prospect draft would suffer.

I think that next year we should have a reasonable time limit (24 hrs) and start the prospect draft when we start the major league draft. Right after BA publishes its top 100 prospect list.

I would also like to say that this has been a fun league to be a part of. My compliments to the commishes that we have had who have developed the rules, etc. Not perfect, but good.

In my other CBS league we started our draft on 02.20.12 (15 rounds) with a 24 hour draft clock. Our draft was complete on 03.08.12. Remove the last three rounds and it would end a couple days sooner. That would give us plenty of time to do a 2-3 round amateur draft before the season started.

I think next year, we have to make our keepers final before valentines day and then we start both drafts immediately afterward. We also use a 24 hour time limit for drafting for the first five rounds and a 12 hour time limit after that.

I am OK with everything you said, but... the prospect draft should start after BA's list comes out. I would hate to see the first few drafters not have the list and the rest have the advantage of having it. I believe the subscribers get the list early. I would hate to see them having an advantage over everyone who is not a subscriber.

BA is not the only authority on prospects.

But if it's a widely used tool that is available in plenty of time to complete 3 rounds of a prospect draft, why not wait?

I prefer drafting a little later anyway so you have more info and lower the risk of getting stuck with a guy that gets a season ending injury in ST.

So we start on 3/1 again, but implement the time limits for the picks?

BA is not the only authority on prospects.

True.

But it is near the top and when I follow the prospect draft and the order of BA's list there is a very high degree of correlation.

yeah, and most widely respected prospect lists come out during the offseason, usually after the new year.

side note, BP did a really handy Excel compilation of the top 100 prospect lists from 14 different sources:
