In 1999, Pedro Martinez gave up the third-highest batting average on balls in play.

 

In 1999, opposing hitters had a line of .205/.248/.288/.536 off Pedro despite a .325 BABIP, 43 points higher than his career average. Ridiculous.

And he still had the lowest H/9 in the league. 1997-2003 Pedro is the sickest pitching MLB has ever seen. I don't know how it can even be debated.

 

118-36 2.20 ERA 213 ERA+ 0.940 WHIP 11.3 K/9 5.59 K/BB

 

During the absolute peak of the steroid era.

 

We all know this, but it still shocks me to look at the numbers.
