Dave Duncan told Derrick Goold that Chris was happy with the move and noted that Chris had always done better on the road than in St. Louis so he expected the move to help his son. The elder Duncan, however, was none too pleased with the move. Goold will have more on that later.

BTW...would optioning Duncan down before the trade help Boston with roster moves at all? Just wondering why they made that move if this was on the horizon.

hopefully he quits and becomes the cubs pitching coach to get back at the cardinals.

Rumor has it LaRussa and Daddy Duncan threatened to quit if the team traded Duncan last night, so the trade was nixed....And no, Im not joking...HAHAHAHAHA

I've heard that too, but it's just message board drama. Chris Duncan is the most hated player in STL with TLR a close 2nd. I would highly doubt that there is any truth to it.

It boggles my mind that TLR is hated in St Louis. If he leaves, Pujols could be right behind him.

There is a reason he has won so many games. Based on the "best fans in baseball" rep, they should be worshipping the ground he walks on.

It's easy for Cards fans (myself included) to bitch and moan when LaRussa pulls his nutty moves, and it comes back to bite us. There've been so many times that he's done a double switch, or taken out a reliever pitching great, or pinch-hit for a hot hitter, etc, etc, that many fans just go crazy - and not in a Jack Buck Go-Crazy-Folks way.

On the other hand, the guy wins. Everywhere he goes. For thirty years. So, although he pisses me off on a weekly basis, I also give him massive credit for making this 2009 team 5 games over .500, somehow, when we really could easily be 10 games under.

Anyway, regarding Duncan/Lugo, I don't expect Lugo to be very productive for us. Then again, Duncan was simply a nightmare this season, in the field, at bat, and on the basepaths. Well, wait, on the basepaths he was solid, since he was really good at demolishing the SS or 2B to interrupt a double play.

Huh...I didn't realize Duncan was such a hot button topic in STL. Reading all these articles it sounds like fans were riding him pretty hard.

There was a lunatic-fringe element of fans who insisted that Duncan was worthless, had never done anything to help the Cardinals, and only had a job because his daddy was the pitching coach. These haters took great pleasure in making crude, rude comments about Chris Duncan on talk shows and on message boards. And even when the big fellow hit, the insults would continue, unabated.

Never mind that in his first 562 at-bats as a Cardinal, Duncan slammed 43 homers, drove in 105 runs, had an onbase percentage of .371 and slugged .580. And never mind that as recently as April of this season, Duncan batted .304, had an OBP of .417, slugged .522, drove in 14 runs, and was one of the team's top three offensive players in a 16-7 month. But even then, you'd hear the whiners drone on about nepotism, and how terrible Duncan was, and blah, blah, blah.

Why?

Red Sox & Cards Swap Lugo & Duncan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 22 at 5:30pm CST]

5:30pm: The haul for Lugo is bigger than originally thought. The Sox receive a player to be named later or cash along with Duncan, according to the team's press release.

I know St. Louis isn't paying for all of it, but do they now have about $16m playing SS between Greene and Lugo?

Yep. That's what I said on the first page. People just flat out hated him even though he was raking when he got brought up. Ridiculously unfair treatment.

maybe. i know the red sox were sending "cash considerations," which i assume would be most of lugo's contract in 2009-10.
