Why has Juan survived this long before being optioned? I believe he hasn't pitched in the CL since March 4th.

Later this week, the Cubs most likely will option pitchers Rocky Cherry and Juan Mateo and outfielders Buck Coats and Angel Pagan to Iowa.

Mateo has been hurt not sure to what extent but not sure if he was kept around for treatments.

Perhaps they're trying to send everyone at once so that Pagan goes unnoticed and unclaimed.

Mateo, who has been in one game this spring, has a right shoulder impingement, and he has just started throwing off flat ground. Mateo, who will begin the season on the disabled list, has been busy running the stadium steps with strength and conditioning coordinator Tim Buss.

 

In other news, Coats is likely to open the season on the DL

 

An MRI revealed a cyst in the back of Coats' right knee, and it was to be removed. Coats said he hopes that will alleviate the pain he's been experiencing.
