  1. "When I think about this game...the kind of stretch we're in, you know...and it's like damn, we're not catching the breaks. It's like being in a boat, and having a possum accidentally fall in, and she's got a gaggle of pups suckling on her teats. And you're like...I want to get this possum out of the boat, but she's not gonna let me. She's baring her razor sharp teeth, like little minature toothpicks, and growling and hissing and smelling your fear and all that. And you're like...well, you don't know if that thing is gonna jump up and tear out your throat and feast on your innards. You can't reason with it and I don't know if you want to bash its brains in with a paddle, not sure that will do any good at all. So you tell me? We just need to figure out how to get the possum out of the boat."
  2. Yeah, the slug doesn't seem to be helping much. Time for the Rally Goat... http://www.paintedhandfarm.com/images/gr_1.jpg
  3. Yeah, they can catch the ball. Now if only they could figure out how to defend walks (last in the NL) and home runs (2nd to last in NL), they'd be on on to something.
  4. Time to bring out the Rally Slug™... http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/Graphics/daylily/slug.jpg] Go Cubs! I believe.

  6. Boy, this one really hurts.* * or at least would have if the Cubs had any hope of contending this year
  7. That play sounded like dynamite on the radio.
  8. So let me get this straight. We have yet to reach the Florida half of the 8th and Dusty has basically used every reliever he has available other than Wuertz, Novoa, Rusch and, of course, Dempster. Let's hope Eyre can give them another inning. I don't want to see any of the gascans out there and I doubt Dusty would pitch Dempster beyond the 9th.
  9. Any thoughts on Dusty re-signing? I've always been of the opinion that Hendry was looking for the right time to extend Dusty. As of now, I don't know when that time would come. He had his window when they won 2 in a row against the Nationals. Now it's gone. Assuming you are correct, it's great (read: not) to to see that Hendry wants to bring back Baker, but is just waiting for the right time when it will be most palatable to the fans. It's like he is playing some kind of PR shell game. Either Baker is the right man for the job or he isn't. Circumstances may eventually force Baker out, but does anybody have any confidence that things will change with a new manager?
  10. You can become a member of DustyBaker.com for only $35 annually. What a deal! Just check out all of the benefits. Perhaps the most interesting exclusive feature is the "mailbag" where Dusty will answer your questions. It would be interesting to hear Dusty have to answer for his bad managerial moves. Oh wait, it states: e-mail our staff and look here each month for answers to selected questions. So much for that. If you have a question...how to fix a bad habit... Dear Dusty, I'm a little leaguer who is clogging the bases by taking too many walks (I can't help it, it's hard to swing at pitches over my head). How do I fix it? http://www.dustybaker.com/images/staff.gif Dusty Baker and his staff attempt to educate you on the art and science of hitting (and avoiding having to pay MLB licensing fees)
  11. Good for Peter Gammons. Hopefully this vein of criticism will pick up. I'm tired of hearing about curses and billy goats. Most importantly, and this complaint that seems to resonate the most, I'm tired of hearing about the Tribune not spending enough money. It's a red herring. No team in baseball spends more for less. To borrow a phrase from P.J. O'Rourke, giving money to Jim Hendry to spend is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

  13. Don't forget the George Bell trade That wasn't Hawk. He did trade away Bobby Bonilla, though.
  14. Didn't Hawk challenge Mariotti to a fight one time. Between that and his "Pierzynski hit Barrett harder" quip, Hawk is not a very secure individual. My favorite Hawk moments are when the White Sox are losing and he can't even be bothered to call the game. You can just hear him sulk through all the dead air. With the White Sox winning it all, I'm sure he's much happier these days, but probably more insufferable than ever (I make it a practice to avoid listening to him). BTW, for all of those clamoring for Steve Stone to become GM. Hawk Harrelson is a grade A example of why hiring your announcer to the front office might not be a great idea. This is the genius who decided to move his future Hall of Fame catcher to the outfield. His 1 year general manager stint was an unmitigated disaster.
  15. Trying to pick a side between Hawk and Mariotti is like trying to choose between Hitler and Stalin.
  16. Watching Chad Bradford throw sidearm slop = great fun.
  17. I've been as critical of Baker as anyone and I still think he needs to go, but I don't think anything will make this team any better. Honestly who could win with this bunch of crap? I know I'm beating a dead horse, but Baker is part of the reason that the team is inadequate. He asked for many of the players he has now. He rides he starters too hard - especially in 2003 when Prior was what, 22 years old? Or was he 23? It sickens me that injuries are being used as an excuse when Baker probaby played a part in some of those injuries. I completely agree, but not even Jim Essian himself can save this season. How about Bruce Kimm?
  18. It's not just lack of walks, it's a complete lack of power. But we can score so many different ways now!
  19. No. Why not? The Angels don't make that trade. No way, no how.
  20. Having now watched the brouhaha, I have to admit that was incredibly stupid of Michael Barrett. Yes, you may know Brazilian Jui-Jitsu (and drive a Dodge Stratus), but you just got yourself suspended for at least 10 games. Now we'll see plenty of Hank Blanco and his .228 (and lowering) OPS. A bad offense just got even worse if that is remotely possible.

High comedy all around. BTW, it's great to see all the FIRE™ and INTENSITY™ resulting from the bench clearing brawl.
  22. Obviously Murton has been less than great, but he's young, cheap, actually will take a pitch from time to time, and isn't afraid of clogging the bases. When you are a team as bad as the Cubs, thats when you play the kids and put up with the growing pains. Murton is the type of hitter we need more of and hopefully he'll start driving the ball. God only knows what Baker and Clines have in store for him.
