  1. First reference to Jackson being a potential ship-out candidate. I was wondering when that was going to come up: http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/starting-samardzija-cubs-will-be-position-make-deals Oh, and:
  2. I would probably trade Soler for a top-50 pitching prospect if we weren't eating any contract.
  3. Well, right now, the hottest offseason rumor *is* that we won't sign anybody of importance.
  4. I find it helps to only be an Illini fan when they are good. 2005 was so sweet.
  5. I just noticed Colorado finally started losing and we're in our rightful place atop the division.
  6. In case this morning had too much broader topic stuff for some people's delicate constitutions to digest, here's something about the offseason: http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/20569/expect-more-inexpensive-additions-to-cubs
  7. It's a little exciting that they added a pretty decent third-liner to the team at a great cap hit. That sort of depth never, ever hurts. But yeah, Ladd >>>>> Versteeg and I wouldn't be nearly as excited if this wasn't a member of the first Cup team returning. (tee hee hee it is so awesome having to differentiate which championship you are referring to)
  8. Jackson and McNutt were the top-100 guys, iirc. It's the exact sort of frustrating "heads I win/tails you lose" argument that the Arguello-style fans like to engage in. If Baez excels, that doesn't show that the front office inherited some talent, it shows that they are excellent at player development. But if Jackson falls apart, that doesn't prove that they failed at his player development, it shows that they didn't inherit any real talent. I don't have a super-strong opinion either way on what Baez and Jackson would look like without the new front office. It's completely counterfactual and I don't think anybody has a good way of separating the talent of the player from the development skills of the organization. But the default assumption for some seems to be whichever way makes the front office look the best in each situation.
  9. Getting into player development gets us into all sorts of squicky areas like what happened to the two top prospects that *were* in place when the front office took over.
  10. Sort of, and that's not incompatible with the opinion that the system would still be pretty decent without the last two years of losing and flipping and going nuts on IFAs.
  11. Well, everyone on HFBoards, who usually hate trading anyone young, seems to be ecstatic, so that works for me.
  12. Even if we put aside whether the path they've taken is the right one, they haven't exactly been flawless in executing it. We are like one Arodys Vizcaino setback from maybe ending up with nothing to show for the 2012 trade deadline.
  13. Would the system be that much worse? OK, we win 75 games in 2012 and don't make the trades. We still have 6 of our current top 10, plus the 2013 No. 12 pick or whatever.
  14. I think that's more than a bit optimistic. 2015 is still very possible for either of them, especially Bryant. And god help us if Baez pulls a Rizzo in his first exposure. I don't think they meant for this to happen. They just haven't been very adept at executing their plans. I don't disagree.
  15. I know we've done it before, but I still want like 10 goals every time we face Mike Smith. Screw him for making Phoenix think they actually outplayed us in that series.
  16. That's a pointless oversimplification that's only going to lead to me pointlessly oversimplifying in response.
  17. I think this idea is getting harder and harder to justify every passing year where we have to go through "But we lost 97 games last year, no point in adding anyone good" and another 300k fewer tickets are bought at Wrigley Field. Not to mention what it's going to do to TV ratings and the media deals.
  18. Obviously not enough. I'm not denying that it's a narrow road, but the way they gave up in 2012 and seem to be in 2014 without trying wasn't helpful to anything. That total probably looks a little closer if they don't break Starlin Castro. One Carlos Villanueva well-used could have made a big difference in 2012.
  19. The Yankees have never lost 375 games in a four-year span. I know it's crazy, but follow me for a minute. Maybe, just perhaps, (and again, I know I'm asking a lot here), there could have been something in between Pujols/Wilson and Stewart/LaHair.
  20. Technically, Ryan Flaherty and Tyler Colvin are both 2011 farm products who have had 1+ fWAR seasons since.
  21. I'm not sure I can follow TT down the path of "well, there weren't as many good players in place in 2011 as we'd like, so I understand why they haven't added a bunch of good players since then." I don't understand. Add the good players. If the financial restrictions are real, then maybe we didn't *really* need a Concepcion and a bunch of overpool IFAs and stuff like that. Because what it's doing to attendance and long-term revenues is pretty horrific.
  22. There's still some small part of me that hopes that maybe, somehow, this is all a smokescreen and Epstein's about to come flying down on a ROFL-copter throwing dollars out the side and we're going to get Tanaka and Ellsbury and two more mid-level signings. But if we're going where it seems like we're going, then they really are just going to wait and see when the prospects develop enough to make us good. There's really no easy way to tell when that is. If Starlin Castro puts up 4 WAR; and Mike Olt hits 25 HRs; and Junior Lake can keep his K% below 25% and put up some power; and if Kyle Hendricks becomes a useful start; and if Vizcaino and Paniagua and Rivero and Grimm and Ramirez and who knows who else comes together and suddenly we have an elite bullpen; then maybe it's 2014 and Javier Baez comes up to be our Andruw Jones and we all live happily ever after. But if all those guys suck and Travis Wood's arm blows out and one of Baez or Bryant busts and the other isn't up until 2015, and we never really do find any top-shelf starting pitching, then maybe it'll be like 2017 or 2018.
  23. You need to cast a wider net if you want to keep up with my comings and goings. I've been going at it with Arguello most of the day in his comments. That's how I ran into DiCaro in the first place, she was bragging about holding court on Twitter. Ah, I've never been to Arguello's site, just read his Twitter stuff. If you've got him going on Twitter though, no idea why it's not showing up for me. Not on Twitter, in his site comments. He wrote a long, snarky column about how brilliant everything is because we're too awful to spend on free agents and only the special, smart fans can see how great this truly is.
