A DFA wouldn't have helped Petrick come back-only a DL stint for somebody can do that. They can't really push Eyre to the DL, because he would almost certainly fight it. It's hard to tell right now if Cherry really is hurt, or if he is just a little more accommodating. My guess is that his shoulder does hurt a little bit, and he'd be out for 2-3 days, and they took the opportunity to put him on the DL. He's eligible to come off just a couple games after the All-Star break, so it's not that bad for him either. With Cherry, they could have said it's either DL or AAA. With DL, he still collects a MLB paycheck and accrues MLB service time. He was probably more than willing to accept it. You couldn't give Eyre that choice. He already has the service time and makes his money one way or the other.
