  1. I was irrationally mad when the Cubs didn't take Appel with the 5th pick last year. I thought he was the best player last year and still think he is the best option last year. He has a better track record than Gray and I'm not really sold on Bryant. That said, I'm glad they are picking 2nd with at least three good options. As long as they don't try to outsmart everyone and pick someone out of the top three I will be happy.
  2. He's been pretty nasty in the last 3 saves. Not like tonight. The movement on his pitches was ridiculous.
  3. To sum up the quotes, Sullivan said that the Cubs' have benefited over the years from having a national audience, thanks in part to WGN. The national audience helped increase the value of the club. Now the club can make more money if they ditch WGN. He also points out that the Cubs' are under no obligation to stay on WGN. I think he pretty much sums up the situation. The worst thing about the quotes, is that Ricketts is now claiming that a $150MM payroll is unsustainable for the team. Granted, payroll is not the only factor determinative over whether or not a team will be good, but with the right management, it should give a team a big advantage over smaller market teams.
  4. Depending on the numbers, I really like the signing. There must be a move on the horizon to clear 2 roster spots. Any guess as to who gets traded?
  5. Thanks for posting that link. After reading that article it is easy to see why Maples has dropped off many of the prospect lists.
  6. It would be great to get a legitimate offensive coordinator. I'm fine with Lovie's defense, but he should have no say on the offensive side of the ball.
  7. I'm waiting until I get the official word from Bob Nightengale.
  8. i am not agreeing to that at all. my goodness, some people act like the entire franchise died in a plane crash and we literally have to start over with nothing. this is a baseball team with huge resources. it is not acceptable to just punt FIVE seasons of baseball. I agree. With the Cubs resources there is absolutely no excuse for forfeiting several seasons.
  9. Don't worry, they promised to spend the money eventually.
  10. Not happy that the deal didn't happen, but I'm happy to see them be so aggressive with a decent free agent. In the end, it sounds like Sanchez didn't want to come to the Cubs anyways and who can blame him. His options were to stay on a team that was in the world series last year and has made some improvements or go to a team that lost 100 games and hasn't made any significant moves to improve.
  11. What the hell? :banghead: I guess TT was right about Bob N. This would suck bad if the deal falls through.
  12. What is funny is that Bob Nightengale is doubling down on Twitter and saying that it is a done deal. Hopefully he knows something the others do not.
  13. I really like this move if it is true. Sanchez has been an extremely consistent pitcher over the last several years, and would suddenly make the rotation very solid. Also, I like to see the Cubs making a big signing, perhaps proving that they are being very disciplined regarding signings and not just cheap.
  14. I was ready to not like this signing, but based upon WAR the Cubs have nearly replaced Maholm and Dempster (5.8 WAR) with Baker and Feldman (5.1 WAR combined, if Baker reverts to pre TJ numbers) and spent only $13MM or so in the process. Granted it hasn't made the team any better yet, but it is still early in the offseason, and they have filled two relatively big holes. Now with $40MM in available payroll left (assuming with arb elegibles payroll sits at approx. $80MM) I would like to see some upgrades at CF, 3B and the bullpen.
  15. I love the conservative play calling while trailing 20 points.
  16. Not a bad signing. According to fangraphs he was worth $2.6MM last year and worth more than $1.3MM all but one year since coming into the league in 2004. I would say that is a pretty good gamble.
  17. Unless he is cheap or they think they can trade him, it is hard to see how a 32 year old reliever who has never pitched in the majors would be the type of player Theo and Jed would sign. What range is he expected to sign for?
  18. Depends on which type of blind bid you are talking about. In the context of the posting system, this should help you understand the process. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sealed-bid-auction.asp
  19. From BN http://www.bleachernation.com/2012/11/14/lukewarm-stove-baker-ryu-hunter-relievers-blue-jays-mets/ I would have rather not read that. I see both sides of the failed bid, but considering the budget advantage the Cubs have over other teams and the fact that they seem to be primarily focusing on building, clearly the money was there for them to sign Ryu.
  20. I hope the Cubs have scouted him well and realized that he wasn't worth the $25.7 posting + signing fee. I'm surprised they didn't go after him harder than they did, considering all of the extra payroll money they should have.
  21. Great read. The thing that most surprised me about the BP list is that they listed 4 pitchers in the top 10. They appear to be very bullish on the Cubs pitching prospects and that is good to hear.
  22. I like the risk and one thing that we have learned so far about Jed/Theo is that they seem to be pretty disciplined on free agent deals. I would expect that if an offer is out there is it is similar to Maholm's deal last year, where they are only on the hook for one year and have an option in case the coaching staff fixes something and he turns out to be good.
