  1. I hope that the Cubs aren't paying much of his remaining contract for that return. #-o
  2. Raisin did you do your usual breakdown of Cubs draft picks this year? Those have been excellent over the last few years. I see some quick blurbs in this thread but can't find anything else.
  3. If the Cubs plan on releasing him at the end of the year anyways, why not try to get as much salary relief as possible? Even if it is only a few million in savings? I'm more concerned about giving Zambrano away. He could actually be useful throughout the remainder of his contract, with the remote possibility that he returns to ace/semi-ace form.
  4. He's got to get his BA up first.
  5. I saw Quade's comments online that he thought Wells pitched a good game. Then I looked at the stats and saw that it was the usual sucky 2011 version of Wells. Plenty of hits and walks given up and plenty of runs given up. Maybe in Quade's mind that is what passes for good these days.
  6. The Cubs could do a lot worse. I like Campbell.
  7. According to Phil Rogers the Red Sox are going to pursue Matt Garza. I'm not that familiar with the Sox system. Any chance Hendry is able to get a better package back than the one he gave up to get Garza? Taking a quick look at BA's mid-season top 50, the only prospect the Red Sox have on that list is Anthony Ranaudo at 37. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/sc-spt-0710-whispers-rogers-inside-ba20110709,0,1713196.story
  8. More terrific in game management by Quade allowing Lopez to hit in the sixth with 2 on and 2 outs. :banghead:
  9. He'll turn 22 in October. Opponents hit .302 off him in TN and .280 in DY. He is almost certainly being rushed, at least it seems that way to me. Didn't look at his scouting report but based upon his splits, he has a real tough time getting out LH hitting. Lefties were hitting .360 off him at AA which accounts for most of the reason that his Opponent BA was so high.
  10. Well when you put it like that. :(
  11. Who couldn't see this coming? Prior to last week he was averaging about 1 inning per outing and hadn't pitched more than 2 innings all year. Quade leaves him in for 5 innings without stretching him out first and now he is DL bound with an elbow injury. :banghead: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-cubs-staff-in-flux-with-mateo-bound-for-dl-20110704,0,5538875.story
  12. What is the deal with Logan Watkins? In June, he OPS'ed 1.071 and so far in July he is hitting .308 with an impressive.438 OBP. Wasn't he an overslot guy? Granted he doesn't have a lot of power but he seems to have some speed and a knack to get on base.
  13. IIRC Hendry and Ricketts both stated before the season that there was flexibility built into the budget to allow for some additions if the Cubs were contenders. It might be possible that Ricketts realizes the Cubs won't be buyers at the deadline and is allow Hendry to use that money to pick up some decent prospects. If so, I would like to see the spending continue and some of the more intriguing draftees signed i.e. Maples...
  14. Somebody from BCB was also saying that Malave signed with the Cubs. Guess we will have to await the official word.
  15. Besides being a 16 yr old SS that won't stick at SS, what is the scouting report on this kid?
  16. I am more interested to see how Simpson finishes the season and pitches next year. A bad case of Mono can be devastating for an athlete and takes a long time to come back from.
  17. I used to love to listen to the games on radio, mainly due to the chemistry between Ron and Pat. This year I have tried to listen, but find I enjoy Moreland much less so than Dave Otto. Which is saying something, because I didn't particularly care much for Otto. For whatever reason, it seems that Moreland doesn't have much to add and just isn't very interesting. And probably the worst aspect of Moreland in the booth is whatever is going on in the 5th inning. Does Moreland do play by play during these innings? Its like neither guy in the booth has a clue what his job is and they just talk over each other the whole inning. How long is Moreland's contract? Granted nobody is ever going to compare to Ron, but I think Pat deserves better.
  18. Vitters line over the last 10 games! .419 .793 1.212 =D> Lets hope that he is figuring it out.
  19. His stats are interesting gives up less than 1 hit per inning and would have pretty good numbers, but for the walks. I don't see how they think calling him up will help him cut down on the walks.
  20. Where are we seeing that Wood has a NTC? Cot's doesn't list one. I don't think he actually has one, the general spec is that he signed with us for the price he did because this is where he wants to be and they won't trade him without his OK. Yeah, Wood doesn't need a NTC based on his conversations with Ricketts and the deal he signed. From the sound of it, he doesn't want to go anywhere and wants to finish his career with the Cubs. And if he continues to be affordable, I don't see any reason to not keep him around.
  21. This "Z is crazy meme" is getting out of control. The writers focus on his past actions and somehow try to equate them to his comments yesterday. It would be one thing if he was tearing up the clubhouse or destroying the water cooler, but he wasn't, he was voicing his frustration with the situation at hand. Nowhere did he call out one teammate or not point the finger at himself. He was holding the whole team accountable. I agree with other posters, that if it was Dempster or even Kerry Wood that made the comment, the writers would be applauding them for their leadership and speaking the truth.
  22. I would hope that they could get some good pitching in return for Z. I like how your thinking though with possibly throwing in Soto to sweeten the pot.
  23. At $18MM/yr I wouldn't be sad if Hendry found a taker. With his pretty good start to the 2011 season this might be the best chance the team will have to swap him and get decent value.
  24. It is hard to argue with what Big Z is saying. The good news is that Z would probably waive his NTC to go play for a major league team at the deadline.
  25. Erm, Wittenmeyer was contending that the Cubs were on Selig's [expletive] list and he would put spending restrictions on them in favor of a steep debt paydown (or something like that). He just said that they aren't and he won't. I'm assuming you meant Wittenmeyer "wasn't contending"...? Here is relevant snippet from the Suntimes article.
