  1. That is an impressive line by Burke. Does he have to be protected this year or is it pretty much assumed that he will not be taken by another team? For some reason I thought that Candelario played SS, but still good to see him doing so well. Phil notes as well, that even though Vogelbach's avg. is fairly low so far that his OBP is .400+. That is nice to see for a change. Hopefully Wilken has had a change in draft philosophy and we will see more Golden, Vogelbach types in the future. It will definitely be fun to watch the minors next year.
  2. I'm amazed that nothing has leaked as yet. I can't imagine the Red Sox owner and President will go onto a radio show tomorrow morning and not address this situation, and the fact that we have no indication of what they will say is remarkable.
  3. Vitters 1.141 OPS is looking pretty good so far. :D
  4. Agreed and it is not even a news conference, it is a radio interview.
  5. Soriano seems like a worse player because of the contract he signed. When you look at his stats at the end of the year, they certainly aren't sexy, but they are not terrible. His OPS ranked him 6th in the NL for LF and only three of the LF ahead of him were significantly better. (Braun, Holliday, Gonzalez). If the Cubs are looking to unload one of their OFers I would rather they trade Marlon Byrd.
  6. Nice effort by Dempster tonight. Quade showed us all by letting Dempster pitch 119 pitches and get torched in a meaningless game. But at least Dempster got his 200 IP this year.
  7. Vitters started the season pretty poorly in AA. If you look at his numbers since June he hit .297 .354 OBP and had a .809 OPS. Sure we would all like to see him OPS .900+, but as a 21 year old in AA, I would say that he more than held his own.
  8. Raisin - Thanks for the snippets. Sounds like we have some pretty intriguing prospects to follow next year. Did Hernandez and Amaya sign for similar $$ as Castro or were they bigger $$ signings? Love what they are saying about Baez's potential. It sounds like he could be the real deal. Lets just hope that he has some more patience at the plate than other recent Cubs draft picks. Good to hear that Simpson is not injured, but very disappointing to see that his FB is currently 80-84.
  9. Very disappointing end of the season for McNutt. He has fallen off hard this year. BAA June .458 July .361 Aug .326 Sep .353 Is he hurt or just struggling mightily vs. AA hitters?
  10. Don't worry, I have it on good authority that the Cubs are awesome at developing pitchers under Fleita. So now that Hendry is gone I guess Fleita is the new scapegoat. DAMN YOU FLEITA FOR RUINING MCNUTT! THANK GOD ARCHER GOT OUT BEFORE YOU COULD DESTROY HIS CAREER AS WELL! Randy Wells and Rich Hill are the only starting pitchers Fleita has produced in, what, 7 years? And Hill had a really brief run. Not exactly something to hang your hat on. Is that really Fleita's fault or the organizations fault for not allowing Wilken or Fleita to spend any money on the draft until this year? It will be interesting to see how the new amateur signings turn out from this year's draft. Also, I could be wrong, but it seemed that since hiring Wilken the team has shied away from going heavily after high risk/high reward pitching prospects in the draft.
  11. That is a loser mentality. There is no reason at all that they can't do both.
  12. No, they will be, this coming offseason. Have you bothered to consider that the Cubs are cutting back on payroll because that team fell apart and it's time to wait out those contracts (all coming off this year and within the next 2 years after)? Or that the Ricketts family hasn't even officially owned the Cubs for two years yet (IIRC, I might be a little off)? The payroll 1 year after the Ricketts bought the Cubs went down from approx $145MM+ to $125MM. Prior to the season Ricketts went cheap on starting pitching with Garza (expensive on minor league talent), cheap on 1B in Pena, and basically failed to address the teams major issues. Now there are rumors that payroll may go down again next year, and that Ricketts is going to shy away from any big contracts. Not exactly confidence inspiring stuff. For good reason as spending more money on that team, a team he had no real part in putting together anyway, would have been futile and obviously so. How should he have addressed the major team issues he ignored (I'm guessing SP and solid veteran 1B on one year deal don't count) fully last offseason? We will never know if not cutting payroll would have made a difference. But it definitely did not help.

  14. The Cubs are in and have been in a position to spend more money on payroll and player development than they have spent in the past. Nothing that the new ownership group has done so far has shown a willingness to increase payroll. The only notable change so far, has been an increase in spending on the draft, with a concurrent drop in payroll spending. Why would the GM of a team that spends $50MM more a year in payroll and has consistently spent money on the draft and international signings, go to a team that is cutting back on payroll and has a middle to the back of the pack minor league system?
  15. It is all relative. He is with the Red Sox now.
  16. I didn't realize that Ramirez has a mutual option for 2012 and can decline the option if he doesn't get a multi year contract at the end of the year. Makes it more puzzling why the Cubs didn't try harder to trade him at the deadline.
  17. Unless Ricketts is going to offer Epstein the same spending as he has in Boston, he might as well forget it. Why would Epstein want to leave a perennial winner with a large payroll and good farm system for the a team that under spends and is tight with spending?
  18. Please no extension. The Cubs have gotten some decent value out of Dempster over the course of his contract, but age is not on his side. Hope that Dempster does the right thing and goes for the money, while declining his option.
  19. Zych had a scoreless debut in AZ with 1 IP 2K's.
  20. Negrin's player page shows that he is 27 years old and this is his first year in the minors?
  21. Vitters was 3 -3 before being HBP and taken out of the game. Hopefully he is not injured. :?
  22. I think the main difference between the two, is that Barney is good at fielding his position.
  23. I don't know how many times he has turned his back to the batter, but I think that is beside the point. I'm sure this isn't the first time he wasn't paying attention to the game of wasn't or in position and prepared for the ball. How hard is it for a major league player to be in position and paying attention to the game before the pitcher releases the ball?
  24. $1.2MM for Dunston, Jr.? I didn't realize he was considered that good of a player.
  25. http://www.bnd.com/2011/08/01/1807701/waterloo-high-grad-signs-with.html Garrett Schlecht Cubs 9th Round pick signs for $355k. Don't know much about him, but that is some pretty good change for the youngster.
