Well, with Sammy and Remmy's contracts off the books and Burnitz's option probably not going to be picked up, the Cubs are going to have a bunch of money ($30-$35 million) to spend this offseason, so I think they can afford to take a flier on some free agent (Burnett, Wagner, Ryan, Millwood). The Cubs really need a power bat in the outfield, but Giles is pretty much it for the FA market when it comes to outfielders. Hopefully Hendry can pull off some sort of trade. I don't know what to think about the SS situation. Nomar just can't seem to stay healthy at all, so I think I'd pass on him. I don't know if Cedeno is ready to take over. He should have had the chance to prove himself when Nomar went down in April so we could have at least seen if he was good enough to take the starting job next year. Now we go into the offseason with SS being a big question mark. I don't know if Hendry would want to throw 3-4 years and probably big money at Furcal. I don't know if it's worth it. I'd like to see Hendry sign Wagner or BJ Ryan to be our closer next year, and bring back Dempster and Williamson as setup men. Dempster has been good as closer, but he's starting to scare me a bit. Fill the rest of the bullpen with young guys (Novoa, Wuertz, Ohman, Brownlie?) I'd also like to see Hendry bring in another starter. I think it depends on if Maddux is going to be here next year or not. If for some reason he retires I could see Hendry possibly making a run at Burnett. If Maddux is back next year (which will most likely happen) then I could see Hendry going after Kevin Millwood. With Woody's health a question mark I think it's important that the Cubs start the season with another solid starter. I'd be nervous going into next year with Rusch/Williams/Hill as the 5th starter. It's definitely going to be a much more exciting offseason this year compared to last year though.
