  1. it's statements like these that cause me to ignore whatever stone says about anything anymore. until cedeno learns that striking out is not the end of the world, he's going to be average, and izturis is absolutely terrible, just terrible. this team's problem is that it can't get on base or score runs and stone thinks it can be fixed by bringing in izturis? what stupidity, stone has lost his mind--even brenly offers more accurate insight into the game. stoney should stick to talking aboout how bad wood's mechanics are. Izturis is hardly terrible. He was an All-Star SS last year. When was the last time we had one?......I thought so. Stoney has said the Cubs need to make a number of deals with the thought 'does this make the Cubs closer to the World Series'. Even if Izturis is a placeholder for Eric Patterson for two years, he's an improvement over what we have. Hendry can probably move 10 players in the next month. I don't see one everyday player in our minor leagues ready to go. Do you? I know having Stoney puncture your Kerry Wood dreams is tough but deal with it.
  2. Fixed. Please edit your own posts and not mine.
  3. Tejada is on the trading block again. O's looking for at least one starting pitcher and others. Rumor is that Tejada numers are suffering recently because of the possible inclusion in the Grimsley mess.
  4. The Evil Stoney said yesterday that the Dodgers would be a team that has interest and $$$ to deal for ARam. He said that Bill Mueller won't be back and that Ned Colletti may be looking to acquire an impact 3rd baseman. He felt that Cesar Izturis is being dangled, but it would take more young Dodger players to get ARam. Stoney said a Cedeno/Izturis infield is one that 'lasts for 10 years'. He also mentioned that Maddux could wind up in LA too. He felt Nevin and Todd Walker would be traded.
  5. Kudos to the Cub fan, seated behind homeplate last night, who had the 'Fire Dusty' sign. It was great to see the sign being held up for the Comcast viewers. I think the fist-pumping was great. I did see someone in a red coat rush down to the area in the 8th and I feared the 'MacPhail Thought Police' had seized the sign. But he survived. I think he echoes our views here.
  6. I don't get it. Do we have one now? Apparently not. Hendry was too busy(doing what?)to be in Minnesota and watch his 18 games below .500 team get swept by the Twinkies. Maybe Chuckie Cheese had some special week-end buffet he couldn't pass up. But MacPhail was there in the Twins box being chummy with Tom Kelly and GM Terry Ryan. MacPhail is juicing his contacts hoping to lineup a job this offseason because he knows he's on his way out. The speculation is that MacPhail is in line to take over for Selig as Commish in 18 months.
  7. If he can't see the lack of fundamentals, then I REALLY don't want him in the dugout. Or in the front office. Or having ANYTHING to do with a baseball team. Two more years. 10 more second basemen.
  8. How about a new rule from Dusty that if you are on the DL, you don't dress in your uniform and you don't sit in the dugout. You are not a part of the team at that time. Go sit in the pressbox and free up some room. I noticed that Glendon(Spahn) Rusch helped carry Womack to the training room on Saturday night. Funny that no one else stepped up and helped Womack off the field-Dusty had to do it. Maybe that rumor about factions within the Cubs is true. Kerry was too busy munching on sunflower seedsand checkinghis 401-K.
  9. I don't get it. Do we have one now? Apparently not. Hendry was too busy(doing what?)to be in Minnesota and watch his 18 games below .500 team get swept by the Twinkies. 10. This season is done. This team is going nowhere and we need an expert to evaluate the team and decide who stays and who goes. I think that Hendry should fire Dusty today and come down from the ivory tower and become the manager. PROS: Hendry has experience coaching in college and in the minors. Hendry knows everything possible about player development-he drafted Bobby Hill didn't he. The Cubs don't have to pay for a new manager. Hendry knows all the players, he signed them. He finally will be visible to the fans and not secluded in the bunker. He has time on his hands-the draft is completed and the phone isn't ringing off the hook for Neifi or Wood. CONS: Hendry will be able to see first hand what he has done to this team. He will see the lack of fundamentals and motivation for his players and can't blame the front office. He will have to face the media daily and may be asked a tough question or two. It makes the most sense. That's why they won't do it.
  11. ARam had more heart and more hustle, he'd be a keeper. Sometimes he dogs it so much, he makes Ronnie Belliard of the TRIBE look like Pete Rose.
  12. Please cite some examples of this. Are you basing that comment on his reputation or what's actually occured this season? Because the games I watched showed Ramirez actually hustling out a few hits this season, which is something he admittedly didn't do last season. He's made 2 errors this season. His fielding hasn't been a problem at all. What he has done is struggle mightily without protection in the lineup. He's pressed, and swung at bad pitches. He's not a player you trade unless you are getting a very productive ML player in return. Did you see the game where ARam got hit in the head with a pop fly? Lost in the sun, did he? Ya right. Got an error did he? Nope. Stats lie and don't tell the whole story. ARam's rep has been he has periods of attention lapses and doesn't hustle much. He shuffles to first at times and seems lackadaiscal. He had the same rep in Pittsburgh, now it shows again. Agreed, I don't want to trade him because even average 3rd basemen are hard to find. That's why I asked about Scott Moore. It would be a hard call and Hendry would have to be blown away by a deal and have someone in place ready to go. You watcha Joe Crede or Scott Rolen and ARam isn't close.
  13. During DLee being out, it's pretty obvious that ARam will never be more than he is. He has no speed and often dogs it in the field and on the bases. He could be a better fielder than he shows. He's not even the Scottie Pippen(2nd banana) of the Cubs. I don't know if Scott Moore will ever be ready to take over as a regular 3rd baseman, but I hate to get rid of ARam unless someone is ready.
  14. Let's move on. Wood is not a major league pitcher, he won't be here next year.
  15. Hawk has become a dottering old codger and that's sad. In the 60's he was a fun player, who was known for his antics and strange fashion sense. He rode one of Charlie Finley"s(KC A's owner) mules in a game promotion and had numerous Nehru jackets and gaudy jewelry. He was a pretty good player, especially for the Red Sox. Hawk and Derek Sanderson(what a penalty killer he was) of the Bruins were in Boston and cut out of the same mold. At the end, he was the only attraction for the Tribe. A pretty good hitter and fielder. He has a real obsession with Mariotti. If he didn't love to needle him, he wouldn't read his columns and not say anything on the air. But he does and that just makes him look even sillier.
  16. I can only dream that it was Neifi who hit AJ. But he probably would have swung and missed that too.
  17. Starting tonight in Cleveland. Scheduled to come back against White Sox. Should have started suspension on Friday when he couldn't play. Why did he appeal this thing anyway? The dumb moves continue.
  18. An anecdote I once heard about Gibson (he's a bit before my time... by about 30 years). I have no idea if it's true or not, but I like it: At Spring Training, a rookie was stepping into the box to face Gibson. The rookie starts digging into the box, and McCarver stops him. "Um, kid, you probably don't wanna do that," he says to the rookie. The rookie steps out of the box, KICKS THE DIRT BACK IN to replace the dirt he dug out. Gibson still drilled him. You NEVER dug in against Gibson, because it shows that you were comfortable and would NEVER allow that. If there is a category for intimidating batters, Gibson would be in the Top 10. One story about superstars I have always liked, was when Hank Aaron came to the plate one time in spring training. There was a rookie catcher behind the plate and the catcher looked at Aaron and saw the trademark of his bat was facing up. He told Aaron this and Hank looked back and said: "I didn't come up here to read."
  19. Gibson hit 102 batters in 482 career starts, or 1 batter every 4.75 games. Kerry Wood has hit 80 batters in 174 career starts, or 1 batter ever 2.17 games. But Gibson is known as this headhunter while Kerry isn't. See? Stats are fun! If only Wood had 1/2 the pitching ability and control of a Gibson. Wood has lapses where he doesn't know where the ball is going. Stats don't tell the whole story. Or Tuffy Rhodes would be challenging Hank Aaron for the HR title.
  20. Gibson rarely hit batters. Two reasons for that: 1) Nobody would be stupid enough to show him up. 2) Nobody would crowd the plate on him. That would hurt. Even though he didn't hit many, very few hitters were not intimidated by Gibson. As I remember Gibson hit more than 100 batters. Next. It was a different time in baseball, where players took care of things and there was a better understanding of how to play the game. You didn't have body armor on your arms or legs. If you crowded the plate like a Ron Hunt or hung out over it like Frank Robinson, you were going to get hit. Unless they threw at your head, you took your shot and then took a base. None of this staring at the mound and acting silly. Gibson always said that 1/2 of the plate belongs to him and half to the batter. He just wouldn't tell you which 1/2. Players respected him because he played the game the way it should be. Someone asked him one time if he had been on the mound when Babe Ruth pointed to the bleachers at Wrigley. Gibson said he would have drilled Ruth in his ear. Just imagine what he would have done with Bonds standing there at home or Poolie pointing to the sky. Gibson had to bat as a pitcher and was pretty good. It was a different type of game where you took care of things right away.
  21. Ozzie was faced with the problem of having one of his pitchers nail a Ranger. Since they are going to lose Brian Anderson soon because of the Cubs-Sox fight, they will be one man short anyway. If Vasquez nails a Ranger, he gets tossed and no suspension. Old school says Vasquez should take care of it. He didn't do it. It was his catcher they nailed twice. So now Ozzie must send in a rookie pitcher to finish the deal. They could always use the excuse of the rookie being wild and people would have bought it. He missed, but at least he tried. Now Ozzie blows up because he knows he can't plunk anybody now, because it's too obvious. The umps will probably warn the Sox before tonight's game. If there was no DH and the pitcher was allowed to bat, it would have been taken care of and that would be that. Old school pitchers like Gibson, Drysdale, Marichal, etc.. would have taken care of it-pronto.
  22. I don't know if he's horrible or not, but he certainly seems to be in the Cardinals pocket. Was he out in front of the Big Yak mess? Did he write any critical column in 1998 or 1999 of McGwire using andro? If so, please show me where Bernie put his job on the line and asked Big Yak about 'using'? I'll wager he drank the Kool-Aid and was a stepford wife. So, what silly reasons is he giving about not talking to the mighty Poolie today? Poolie is rehabbing 24 hours a day? Doesn't have his phone number? Poolie's legal handlers won't allow him to talk? I can't believe that any reputable columnist would stop at any of these excuses. This is what happens in a one paper town, there's no motivation to get to the bottom of a story. He might lose his pressbox buffet pass and we wouldn't want this to happen. He's paid to do his column and his forum by the same employer. That makes both fair game.
  23. Is probably also a sports talk show host in St. Louis. Does he take recipe requests on the air?
  24. I never check out the forum of the single newspaper in St. Louis, because of it's small town status. I hear Cards fans bellowing that Bernie Miklasz(who?) is a professional columnist who is aggressive and outspoken. I would think that this writer would be consumed with the baseball season, Albert Pujols and many other issues. But I guess it's asking too much for a St. Louis columnist to address any hard issues. Thanks to an e-mail link I received this morning, I wonder what the hot topic is in St. Louis for it's reputedly professional journalist. HGH? Cardinal trades? No! It's a recipe. Just look at Cards fans lapping this stuff up. ttp://www.stltoday.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=365463&sid=a2ac201074b8421dc5c0d6f4980dfda8 What's next for Bernie-quilting tips? How about lipstick recommendations, Bernie? What a joke. No wonder Cards fans flock here.
  25. The Sox are in need of middle relief and a CF. If I thought we would bring up Pie immediately, I would trade JP to them. With Joe Crede a lock at 3rd, the Sox were going to try Josh Fields in the OF in the minors. He would be available for the right price. They want to win this year. I know that Dunn is a terrible LF, on the par with Dave Kingman. But if we are looking for power in LF-there's Dunn and Carlos Lee. Please tell me if there is another power hitting LF on any team.
