  1. big time, any reason he isn't hitting 7th or better?
  2. All stats since June 1st AB 24 BA .291 Slugging .791 OBP .333 HR 4 SB 1 RBI 9
  3. Anyone go to a pre-season game at soldier field? I was looking to take my wife to a game and was wondering when would be a good time to buy tickets? I was looking to go the 8/25 game against the cardinals. I would assume ebay will be flooded with tickets leading up to the game, anyone know for sure? Right now I can buy a pair for 80-100, think they will get much lower than that if I wait?
  4.        x infinity. Whatever, I don't see how you can defend him, he's not a good fielder. Today's game not withstanding, the attacks on his defense are VASTLY overdone. VASTLY. That's just ridiculous. He's one of the worst 2B at turning the double play. I'm tired of the argument about his fielding percentage because that doesn't tell the story. He doesn't get to most balls and, again, he usually doesn't position himself well enough to turn the DP which is crucial for his position. His reputation is well earned (and judging by the Cubs inability to move him in the offseason, other teams feel that his offense does not outweigh his defensive miscues). NEVIN! Walker's offense isn't that good either Are you joking? You must be joking. He's conistetnly been one of the top 5 offensive 2B in the game over the last few years. His only knock offensively is that he struggles against lefties. You really must be kidding. It's a joke right? Yeah, you can make the argument for Walker, but all you're allowed to use is batting average, homers and RBIs, because all other stats mean diddly squat. Now try and make the argument, lawl at dusty, you young whippersnapper punk. Well, so me where you think is a top five? In what? Only your secretive selective stats? http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/playerrankings/regularseason/2B He is currently listed as a first baseman and he is rated 54.92. That would put him 18th for second baseman.
  5. If the Cubs can hold on today, 4 of 8 of those come from behind wins happened during Z starts. His presence in the game raises everyone's level. Carlos for manager?
  6. I've always wondered why things like that don't happen a lot more often in sports. The Cubs could have got Soriano for Sosa and resigned him if they did that. I'd just throw in an extra 2 or 3 mil to the contract to get the player to do it. If he liked playing for your team and wanted to win, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. He might even get a ring out of it with his temporary team. I think an NBA team attemped something like this, the raptors come to mind. I beleive the league forfeited their draft picks and fined them as a penelty for it. Does this ring a bell for anyone else? Either way I bet its a no/no in baseball too.
  7. Perhaps Baker is much smarter than all of us. In an attempt to provide Guz with as little pressure as possible, send Rusch out to lose the game and let Guz come in to finish it off. What a confidence booster. Plus it can't be easy on the Tigers hitters, you try hitting guzman after seeing the fatman.
  8. It's not only legal, but in some cases necessary to keep separate books for tax purposes vs. reporting to shareholders. For example, the method most companies use to depreciate assets for tax purposes (MACRS) is not acceptable for reporting to hhareholders because the write-off is too fast (an asset may really have a 10-year life, which would be the required write-off period for reporting to shareholders, but be depreciated over 7 years under the tax law). Requirements for reporting to shareholders are based on generally accepted accounting principles, which are developed mainly by the Financial Accounting Standards Board with input from the SEC, while reporting for tax purposes is governed by the tax code and IRS regulations. The two frequently contradict each other, requiring two sets of books. Sorry for the accounting class, but I am a university accounting professor. Class dismissed. :D Thanks for information. Can companies intentionally mislead the public/IRS and have it be legal? Well I work for GE so I am pretty sure they are under quite a bit of scritiny over such things. As for the question of misleading shareholders that is what lands people in jail. The numbers that are reported for tax purposes are not open to the public, so there wouldn't be confusion on the two sets that are being reported. Thanks for the refresher NCCubbie, I have took my MBA accounting class 2 yrs ago and its good to hear that I rememered something from it :)
  9. I can't imagine a Fortune 500 company would keep 2 sets of books in them in this day and age. With the Enrons and World Coms getting busted, the risk is far to great to do this and expect to get away with it. And also, what would the motivation be for doing this? What could possible be worth destroying an enormous company? You are wrong about that, many companies keeps 2 sets of books for internal and external reporting. There are no laws that state companies can only have 1 set of records. The reason for this is for tax reasons and shareholder reporting. When the company is reporting there taxes they want to record things in a way to limit their net income to pay as little taxes as possible. This mainly deals with how a company defers income or depreciates assets to lower net income on a yearly bases. For obvious reason, the company would not want to report these same figures to its shareholders.
  10. How would he lose money!!?? We've got so many revenue streams. Last year the Cubs had @ $100 million dollar team and they made @ 10 million in profit. You do the math. The Cubs made a 7.9 million dollar operating profit in 2001. That same year, Forbes also said that the Cubs were worth 287 million dollars. If the recent reports of a worth between 500 and 600 million are correct, then I'd say that the Cubs had a profit of at least 20 million last year, at a minimum. That's just a guess though, obviously. So last year the Cubs made 10 million in profit on a 100 million dollar payroll while finishing in 5 place in the NL central. That means there ratings were in the tank the last 2 or 3 months of the season. What Cuban would do is do whatever is necessary to keep us contending as long as possible. That drives ratings and ticket sales until the last day of the year. That means making better signings or over paying for the right people to keep us in contention. Anyone have the number on the Cubs profit in ’03? I guarantee it was more than 10% return on investment compared to the payroll. Just look at what Cuban has done in Dallas; before he took over they were a complete failure. I doubt they were drawing more the 7000 a night. At the same time they were still profitable since they were one of the cheapest teams in the league. He opened the wallet and the fans responded. As crazy as he is, the franchise value has doubled or tripled in value (tack on another 30 million in value after they win the championship) and they have a packed house every night.
  11. Could the Cubs beat team Cuba? :-k Mr. Castro, your table is ready.
  12. Mr. Cuban, your table is ready. \:D/ \:D/ Article talks about how the tribune is looking to buyback 500M in stock. Although 10% doens't seem like much, it does show the team is on the table. Full article: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=2019919
  13. Anyone else hoping for a relay bobble on Barret's triple yesterday? Anything to give Barret a reason to turn toward home plate.
  14. I have SRO tickets for Sundays game of that series. Can anyone recommend a good pro-cub bar down there for before/after the game?
  15. An accurate projection would be 1 HR an inning for 162 games. Welcome to cooperstown career home run leader with 1458.
  16. Good ol' Jason Giambi. Caption contest. Arod: Hey Jason, i have heard roids can have horrible effects on your testicles. Jason: Really? Let me check. One. Two. Three?
  17. Any advice on where to tailgate? I have heard that there is an RV and trailer show at the McCormick center and a lot of the good tailgating spots will be reserved for that on sunday. Has anyone heard of this, or know of any other good places to hangout before the game? Thanks
  18. Try to apply clutch to hitting a golf ball a long distance. If you were a clutch golfer you would suddenly be able to hit a longer and more accurate shot during a pressure situation. But if had this ability to hit a longer straighter drive, you would always want to hit that shot; so it would become your normal drive. What happens to most people when pressure is applied, they attempt to do more than they are able to and end up regressing. This would be the previously mentioned concept of anti-clutch. I can speak for myself that I am an anti-clutch golfer. If I am trying to hit a “longest drive” I swing harder and end up hitting a bad shot into the rough. Sure, occasionally the hard swing works and a clutch drive is the end result, but that doesn’t take in to account the previous 9 balls I hit out of bounds in the same situation. This is why I agree with the mindset a clutch performer is one who performs up to their average outcome. And a player who is unable to duplicate their expected outcome would have an anti-clutchness associated with them.
  19. Here is another way to look at a clutch player, they are slackers. If they have the ability to suddenly hit for more power, fewer strikeouts or higher average in key situations. Why can't they do it every time? If a player were notorious for loafing it on the base paths in routine situation, it would make since for him to perform better when it counts. He would be trying his hardest from the start of the at bat, thus might make it to first base a few steps quicker.
  20. So the obvious move for Hendry to get an A would have been to sign furcal to market value contract of 4 years 52 million dollars. Nice work Mr. Perry, now I see why I completely over look foxsports website.
