  1. I hope that we can all laugh about this next week. This will be the most important Winter Meetings that this franchise has had in years, maybe decades.
  2. The good news is that every team knows that the Cubs have enough money to take any bad contract. Let's hope that means someone more like Manny and less like Steve Finley.
  3. I don't think that Furcal is worth $13 million + a year. That being said, the Cubs along with every other team, get an extra $15 million from the inevitable sales of the Nationals. They also get added revenues from internet sales. That doesn't count the money from the new seats or the Jimmy Buffett concerts or cutting the payrolls at the L.A. Times and other Tribune Company holdings.
  4. Why would Macias accept a pay cut?
  5. I'm still a Hendry fan but I grew up during the Himes/Ed Lynch regimes. I'll start believing the murmurs if Hendry doesn't make any moves during the Winter Meetings. I fully expect an outfielder shakeup to be made after Furcal is signed. Now, if the OF going into Valentine's Day is Mench/Hairston/J. Encarnacion, then I will join all the haters on the front line of the protest. Let me also say that I thought that the Eyre/Dempster/Howry troika was overpaid at the time. Now they look a lot better. What do you think that Dempster would have gotten in this market? $25 million? $27? Would you rather have Dempster or Farnsworth for an extra $3 million? I think Hendry's greatest skill is not talent evaluation but market evaluation. That's why he makes such great in-season moves. There's a lot more extenuating circumstances that he can exploit.
  6. Not to mention that Chad Tracy isn't too shabby himself.
  7. I was appreciating your logic until those last couple of sentences. That was uncalled for. Hendry has proved masterful in the past at getting quality players at the trading deadline for next to nothing. His offseason moves have not been as heralded. I assume it has to do with the fact that 30 teams are still in the race and no one wants to alienate their fan base before the season even starts.
  8. I'm sorry. I was under the impression that he would be 37, 38, and 39.
  9. Brian Giles is a great player. I know that he has a great batting eye but solid players such as this still decline quickly as they age. Frank Thomas, Bagwell, Sosa, Palmeiro, Griffey, Bonds... and so on. I would love to see Giles in Cubbie Blue but I understand Hendry's hesistation. That being said, he better make a trade for a different elite right fielder.
  10. Did anyone here hang out in the Baseball Primer Game Threads in 2003? Admiral Ackbar would say that signing Burnett is a trap.
  11. The beauty of Cedeno is that he is a younger, cheaper Neifi. This fact was violated by the fact that Neifi was re-signed. I won't complain as much as long as Neifi only gets 150 AB's next year.
  12. Juan Pierre is neither Hispanic nor French. Discuss.
  13. I don't see a problem with getting Bradley. Worst case scenario is that he melts down and costs Baker his job. The best case scenario is that he has a .900 OPS season and remains calm. There doesn't appear to be any instigators like Jeff Kent floating around. I would like to see Murton in LF, Bradley in CF, and someone passable to keep a spot ready for Pie. It's a lot easier to find a corner outfielder than a CF.
  14. I'll see you guys in the Transactions thread during the winter meetings. Have a nice Thanksgiving.
  15. Pujols will still get the gold glove. Nice play by D Lee I know the voters are bad but that would be inexcusable. That would be like giving the Gold Glove to Rafael Palmeiro when he was a DH. Oh wait...
  16. It's almost eerie how every complaint about Dusty has occured in this game. All we need is for Murton to get benched for a defensive replacement. It's been an educational season with you all, if not an exciting one. So very frustrating. It's hard to squeeze that much mediocrity out of that much talent.
  17. There's a rumor that Minnesota would trade J.C. Romero, Jesse Crain, or Juan Rincon for some offense.
  18. Jose Macias make the final out. Philly up 5 in the 7th inning.
  19. 3-1, Top of the ninth. Walker up after Patterson struck out on a foul tip.
  20. I'm done with baseball after tomorrow's game until the Winter Meetings.
  21. In case you haven't seen, Dempster signed a 3 year/$15.5 million dollar deal.
  22. I like this signing. The Cubs are a lot better with Dempster than they would be without him. What is the bullpen looking like next year? Van Buren Wuertz Ohman Novoa Free Agent? Bartosh? A. Guzman? Dempster If Hendry stays in-house, he can afford to slightly overpay for Dempster's services.
  23. That Macias homer was the last thing I expected to see. WGN pegged it at 410 feet.
  24. Didn't someone ask Len Kasper in that interview if they would ever broadcast from the bleachers?
