  1. in the latest Ask BA, Callis is asked to rank the 2005 draft (the Upton, Bruce, rasmus, ellsbury, tulo, mcutchen, r. zimmerman, braun draft) by team, and he ranks the Cubs last (Donnie Veal only one to the majors). Sigh. On the other hand, i like seeing this question asked, and was just thinking the other day that i wished BA would make something like this an annual feature, looking back on drafts after 5 and/or 10 years to get a good idea of how successful they really were.
  2. thanks for the update on kyler! it's great to see him succeeding in his transition, and he's performed better in his first season as a pitcher than i could have hoped for.
  3. and vogelbach with his first home run!
  4. Tayler Scott debuts at Mesa. 1.2 IP, 3 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 1 BB and 1 K.
  5. Szczur slapped out his 3rd FSL home run
  6. Lockhart and Shoulders debut in Arizona. in the 6th, Lockhart 1-3 w/ 2 K and an error, and Rock is 0-2 w/ a BB and K. Also, Rosario w/ a HR and Hernandez w/ a BB.
  7. Didn't see this already. Callis says in the BA Draft Blog that Cubs spent fourth most in draft ($11,954,550 — heartening) behind Pirates, Nats and Royals. Those four along with D'Backs spent more than previous draft record set last year by Nats.
  8. Well, last year they spent $1.4M on their top three non-Cuban IFAs and spent about $6M overall on IFAs, including Cubans. So even if they are done signing big-ticket Dominicans and Venezuelans, the Cubs would be around $7.5M without any of their other IFA spending being different from last year's.
  9. callis just reported it's not a 2-sport deal after all for maples
  10. I'm not sure how they break down the payments, but keep in mind that the maples deal is reportedly a 2-sport contract, meaning it's 2.5M spread over 5 years (think that's how that works).
  11. Callis tweet: Vogelbach signed for 1.6M
  12. Callis tweets that Zych is done for 400k
  13. Not really unexpected, but in his aforementioned chat K. Rogers says this about Jacquez:
  14. ahh, forgot about that mixup. thanks!
  15. Jersey, to whom are you referring?
  16. Thank you much, CR!
  17. Does anyone know whether any Cubs make BA's minor league best tools lists?
  18. I believe the cub spent about $12M last year on international signings and draft, if you include the Cuban players they signed. BA has separate listings somewhere detailing international spending (not including Cuban signees) and draft spending (which I'm pretty sure doesn't account for Szczur's revised deal). I could be wrong, but I think it's right around there. Either way, if they sign Baez, Vogelbach and Maples, I think they'll be close to that just (somewhere in the neighborhood of $10M) in the draft alone, and it looks like international spending wil be up as well. I think there's a chance total spending in these two areas could be in the $18M-20M range this year, when all is said and done.
  19. sounds like good news to me! Edit: I missed that Raisin posted this already.
  20. Taking this in a different direction, and thinking hypothetically here, if ARam were willing to be traded after making it through waivers (I think that's how that works; correct me if i'm wrong) and assuming the angels would be the team most likely to trade for him, who in the angels system would you like the cubs to target? and who do you think the cubs could reasonably get?
  21. awesome and thanks to both of you!
  22. I figured most of the high school guys would go to AZL, but I'm thinking there's a decent chance baez goes there at least part of the time. Vitters split his draft year between AZL and Boise (only 14 games total), and I'm under the (possibly mistaken) impression that vogelbach at least isn't terribly raw. On another note, how does one recognize professional scouts by sight? do i just look for the radar guns, or do only some of them sit behind the plate and monitor pitch speed? Thanks again, and hopefully this can lead to some good reports on what looks to be an already exciting boise team, regardless of whether baez and vogelbach show up there!
  23. Can anybody give me some good advice on where to sit at Minor league games to get a good view of prospects during the games? I'm not looking to get autographs before the game, but i'd like to be able to get a good view so i can possibly supply some amateurish scouting reports from games since I'll be able to check out some northwest league games (hoping to see baez and vogelbach for boise, plus kim, wells and reed on the mound) as well as Iowa when they come to Tacoma. Thanks
  24. thanks, i wasn't aware the NTC or the 10-and-5 rule applied to the waiver stuff. good to know.
  25. i know he won't accept a trade, and we won't offer arb after the season cuz we don't wanna pay him $16M next year, but do you think there's any chance they put him on waivers for the purpose of having him (and his remaining salary) get picked up by another team like how the White Sox got Rios? They wouldn't get any players back, obviously, but they could save $4-5 million, which could go toward the draft, international free agents or even next year's budget. I'd kinda like them to think about it, although I admittedly don't know much about how the waiver process works, so i could be missing some obvious obstacle.
