    Who are the three targets you want to see on the Cubs come August 4th? This can be however you want to view the trade deadline: modest pick-ups, a reasonable push, an unreasonable emptying of the farm, however YOU view the deadline.

    Well, the Cubs keep doing it despite their pitching staff being in tatters. They're successfully limping to the deadline, which is really the most you can expect of them given the circumstances.

    The Twins are a decent team, now? Maybe? Dunno for sure, but they've been competent for about a month now. Anyway, getting a series win against them isn't automatic now; it's actually something of an accomplishment.     I get it, but I just don't think much is available right now. Have you looked at the AL? It's a bunch of middling teams all bunched together. Everybody is a "contender" right now.

The Athletics had recently designated Civale for assignment, making this a low-wattage trade to shore up the Cubs' injury-decimated staff. Civale, 31, was designated for assignment on July 15, ahead of the team's return from the All-Star break. He signed as a free agent with the Athletics in February and started the season well, going 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA over his first nine starts, but posted an 8.25 ERA in three June starts and a 10.29 ERA through two July starts. He also missed time with right shoulder tendinitis; since coming off the injured list, he gave up 20 runs over 19 innings. Going back to the Athletics is Aiden Moffett, a 22-year-old right-hander in Single-A Myrtle Beach. Moffett has pitched out of the bullpen for the Pelicans, throwing 21 innings over 15 appearances with a 7.71 ERA.     The Padres nearly went insolvent due to overspending. While owners love to cry poor, there are real limitations on the Padres that the Dodgers do not have. And that should change for the good of the sport. It's fine if the Dodgers have more money, but they can't have literally ten times more money. That's bad for baseball and its fandoms.

    Absolutely. I care about a floor WAY MORE than I do a cap. But expecting a floor high enough to matter will involve *a lot* more revenue sharing. Besides, it's just the right thing to do. The Dodgers can't make $350m a season from TV alone while their competition, the Padres, makes $30m.

    I think a good way to sum up my feelings are: I want more parity in baseball. Not perfect parity, but a little more parity. But I am not interested in that parity coming at the expense of the players, the people who I actually give a horsefeathers about on the field.

    This. THIS. THIS THIS THIS! I've been hollering this for years. NOTHING is stopping the owners from arguing revenue sharing amongst themselves, they're just leveraging the argument to yet again screw over the players. I'm NOT completely against a salary cap, I think it *can* be good for the sport as a whole. But it needs to come alongside a huge package of reforms that guarantee players receive a fixed percentage of revenue.
