  1. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3128280&campaign=rss&source=MLBHeadlines If I'm reading this correctly he has a $4.2M base salary and $3.45M in potential bonuses? Doesn't that seem kinda steep for a reliever who's a really bad health risk? Assuming the bonuses are for saves and games finished he should get $7.65M if he can grab the closer slot and stay healthy. Still seems pricy to me. I know he had a nice finish last year but there seems to be a pervasive excess of optimism regarding Kerry's health situation.
  2. I'll die a happy man when the closer role becomes extinct. It's a dumb idea whose time has come and gone, kinda like communism.
  3. The save is a stupid stat and the closer role is an embarrassment to the sport of baseball. If the Reds want to pay this much money for a relief pitcher who only appears for one inning with empty bases and frequently against an opponent's worst hitters with multirun leads, then that can only help the rest of NL Central.
  4. One thing I know for sure is 2008 absolutely has to be the last year we have a one-year stopgap at CF. Inserting another stopgap for 2009 would mean 4 whole years of keeping the position open for Felix Pie, which would be ridiculous. It's not like he's projected as the second coming of Willie Mays.
  5. Yeah, but for 3 more years than Hunter, and he'll make $19M in those years, and he'll be old. Indeed, but I'm getting the feeling that Soriano's contract will become more and more tolerable as the years go on in terms of money if these kinds of contracts become the norm. I don't think so. IMO if there's a clear market bubble anywhere it's in the giving of huge money to so-so players after one great year. Gary Matthews' contract is looking awful now and so is Adrian Beltre's. Then there's the fact that Soriano's contract played a big part in inflating the general market. I very much doubt Hunter would be getting $90M if Soriano didn't get $136M.
  6. Yeah, but for 3 more years than Hunter, and he'll make $19M in those years, and he'll be old.
  7. I don't understand this signing at all. Matthews is a very good defender in CF. I can understand the Dodgers being fed up with Juan Pierre's crappy defense in CF and looking for an alternative, but the Angels didn't have that problem.
  8. It's looking like 2008 will be the 3rd straight year we supposedly just need a stopgap in CF because Pie's arrival in imminent. I'm getting a little annoyed by this. If you keep a position open for a kid this long he better be damn good when he finally shows up. Otherwise it would have been better to trade him.
  9. My main problem with rap is that it ran out of new ideas a long time ago. I knew when guest rapping got out of control that hip hop had a problem. If music is vital and fresh then it shouldn't need a big list of superstar guest appearances to get people interested. All the guesting strikes me as a desperate attempt to cover up the artistic bankruptcy of this musical form.
  10. McDonough's departure will make Hendry even more desperate to impress right away. This will mean the Kaz Matsui contract will be as heavily backloaded as all the others.
  11. One good thing that could come out of this is it might mean Soriano will move down in the order. Only logical explanation for going so hard after Matsui is that Hendry is envisioning Matsui at leadoff(32 SB last year) and keeping Theriot at SS and the 2 hole, where he will be bunting Matsui over quite often. But then we'd be locked into a small ball mentality, which I hate. Matsui isn't much of an OBP guy either.
  12. Yeah, seems a little too good to be true, but if this deal is actually acceptable to the O's then Hendry better get it done. We're locked into win-now mode for the next 2-3 years so there can't be any untouchable youngsters.
  13. Rosenthal says he's been told the Astros are close to signing Geoff Blum so his Matsui story might actually be true. At least he's not just engaging in idle speculation this time.
  14. Looks like Randall Simon can forget his dream of returning to the Pirates.
  15. It's a obvious fake. Besides the lack of any momentary surprise, that wasn't a reflex punch. The kid took the time to soften his knees, then drive off his back foot as he threw the punch, and he did this without a moment's hesitation. He was mentally prepared beforehand.
  16. Why would the Nats do this? Is Marshall really appealing enough to warrant taking on all of Marquis' $16.5M obligation? I don't think so. We'd have to send a bunch of cash to make this happen.
  17. Rockies "bracing for the loss." However will they will go on(sniff)?
  18. I doubt that they're desperate to move $13/1. Also, I doubt that Joe Torre wants to start his Dodger tenure with a rookie SS. If you offered to take most of Pierre's deal, you could probably get rid of Marquis (maybe Eyre and Blanco, too?) and possibly get Ethier in the process. I doubt many here would find that appealing. I also don't see any reason why the Dodgers would expend extremely valuable trading chips to unload Furcal. He's only signed for one more year and SS are always in demand. They could just eat a few million and find a taker for Furcal. They wouldn't need to waste Ethier. If we are serious about getting Ethier/Kemp/Loney we have to take Pierre, not Furcal.
  19. How often does this type of proposal work -- i.e. the type where you try to wow another GM with sheer body count and hope he'll give you 2 or more of his best players? I can say that if I were a GM this stuff wouldn't work on me. Quality trumps quantity.
  20. Let's blow it all on Franciso Cordero!
  21. The goatee is the new mullet, it has been for several years now. Tired embarrassingly played-out fashion that has become the norm for redneck males, and it probably will be for a long time.
  22. Gotta agree. It's hard to believe they couldn't get a better offer for Bedard and Tejada.
  23. well pierre had a batting average near .300 to go with 60 steals, so coletti probably is happy with the signing. Na, the Dodgers have said they haven't ruled out moving Pierre to LF. The fact that they are even considering that tells me they must be having second thoughts about that contract. There are also reports that Ned wants Andruw Jones.
