    I should do one for Carl Crawford. If Pierre gets 5/45, Crawford should get 7/90. At his age and with his skill set I think it would be 8/120 Based on Soriano's and Matthews' contracts I think 8/120 is a good guess.

No. MLB is currently giving birth to a flock of albatrosses. This pattern of giving so-so players superstar contracts based on one great year is going to come to an ugly end. There's no way this level of stupidity can remain unacknowledged for long. As long as the Cubs don't give so-so players superstar contracts, it's not an issue for them. With $115m available this year, blowing up and starting fresh was a bad idea. So you think Soriano will justify his salary in RF for 8 years? I don't. Is anyone going to justify the salaries they've gotten in FA in recent years for the length of the contract? At least the Cubs' signings have a CHANCE to justify it. There is no way on this earth that Matthews or Pierre will ever be worth what they're now making. I agree, of the 3 contracts, if I had to choose between Matthews, Pierre, and Soriano, I'd take Soriano. But I'd prefer to have none of them.

    Dumbest. Contract. Ever. Not. Even. Close. Are you talking dumbest in hindsight, or dumbest at the time the decision was made? To me this is plainly a terrible deal, no hindsight necessary.

    Ichiro makes Juan Pierre look like a pile of puke, and Pierre just got 5/45. How much would Ichiro get if he were an FA today? I'd guess 4/50, just because he's getting a little old. If he were 3 years younger and on the market today he'd get a Godzilla-sized deal. BTW, Ichiro's current contract expires after 2007.

    A textbook example of an unnecessary dependent clause. I was talking about public perception, not my own. IMO a ballplayer is pretty lame if his primary selling point is stolen bases.

    You also have to look at Pierre's SB%. It's already at the far low end of tolerability. If it gets even slightly worse no intelligent manager will let him run much. Without stolen bases Pierre starts looking pretty pathetic, especially for $9M per year.

    Another perspective is that forgetting about 2007 and reloading for 2008 is increasingly looking like it would have been the smart thing to do. We could have sat on the sidelines watching the desperate win-now teams saddle themselves with these crippling albatross contracts.

    The deals Arizona signed a few offseasons ago were pretty laughable. Ortiz, especially. BTW - wait 'til GMJ signs his contract for new records of ridiculousness. The Ortiz deal was pretty funny, but Slappy gets my vote. Even if he maintains his speed it's a terrible contract, but he'll be 30 next summer, so it's likely he'll slow down. Every part of his mediocre skillset is entirely dependent on speed, so if he loses half a step he becomes the world's most expensive high school baseball player. In fact, I'd lay even odds that he's out of baseball before this contract is up.

    In all seriousness 5/45 for Pierre at this stage in his career might be the worst contract I've ever seen. There are Hampton type deals that look awful in hindsight, but no hindsight is necessary to see how bad Pierre's contract is.
