    If poverty is the problem for black kids in the US then why do dirt poor latin kids in Central and South American barrios keep finding a way to play baseball? I think they just like it more.

    Never bought into that. There's plenty of poverty in Latin America, even moreso than in US inner cities, yet there's no shortage of latin kids finding their way onto pro baseball rosters. Simple fact is baseball is no longer very popular with young African Americans. That's why the scarcity of black players isn't going away anytime soon. Jesse Jackson can bitch about it all he wants but it won't change anything.

    It's actually worse than you're making it out to be. Besides pitching no more than 75 innings and usually only one inning at a time, closers very frequently pitch with multirun leads and against the lower half of the opponent's batting order. A lot of saves are just plain easy assignments and not a good way to use one of your most talented and expensive pitchers.

    Except that, dare I say it, moving Soriano down in the lineup might perhaps help the lineup by moving players who get on base more often into the 1 and 2 spots. I'll stop the crazy talk now. At the time he made his post (earlier today), Soriano was 3rd of the regulars in OBP. The other two? They bat 2nd and 3rd every time they play (Theriot/Lee). So far, Soriano's OBP hasn't been a problem at all, and he has been one of the players who gets on base more often. And yet, there's another player who could fill the bill: Matt Murton. I'd go with: Theriot, SS Murton, RF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Soriano, LF Jones, CF Barrett, C DeRosa, 2B Soriano really does have a lot of power, and I really hate seeing solo home runs. Just a personal thing. It's not just you. Big bunches of solo homers really bug me, especially when the player hitting them is being paid huge $$ because of his power.

    Opportunity cost. Look at Soriano's contract, then ask what else we could have gotten for that money. LF is also the easiest position to fill and has arguably the highest offensive expectations. Soriano's numbers are fine but certainly unspectacular for his position. He needs to do better before I'd say his contributions outweigh the opportunity cost incurred by paying his gigantic salary plus blocking the easiest position to fill for 8 years. Which...has nothing to do with this thread. At his current level of production I still consider Soriano a problem.

    HR and RBI clearly the best way to compare. No not really, but when Neifi has been as productive in 49 fewer AB's it says something. Would I rather have Neifi than Murton? No, but Murton isn't nearly as good as the popular opinion on this board thinks he is. Neifi's numbers are heavily influenced by one good performance in a 13-4 blowout vs. KC.     Those are always 95% of the trade proposals here. Yeah, it's true. In trade threads way too often I end up turning around the scenario and asking the poster if he would be happy with the proposed deal if he were a fan of the other team. The answer is usually an obvious "hell no". I remember some of the ideas to get Carl Crawford. They were are all pretty hideous from the Rays' point of view.

    You can find that quote with the daily Carrie "literary scribe" at cubs.com. That's disappointing but Lou's actions have already shown that he favors veterans over the young guys. You can't sit vets in April and May? Then when can they sit? In the thick of a pennant race in the 2nd half? I wish someone would ask Lou about this.

    I would. Alfonso seems to have a great arm. Bruce Miles has been saying since the day he signed that Soriano should be the everyday RF for this club especially with Pie being groomed to become the everyday CF. Some of that was predicated on the belief that Jones could be dealt, which I still think can happen. He definitely should be in RF. I don't know if his offensive resurgence had anything to do with his move back to LF, but I wouldn't chance another move unless it was an emergency. He does have the arm, but RF in Wrigley is tough. I'd put him in RF. It's far more likely that his recent offense stems from playing a bunch of games against the Pirates and Nats than from playing LF.

    I hope the Pagan HR means Jacque won't be getting any more starts vs. LHP for a while.

    He's said he has back pain when he's fat, though he does seem to pitch better then.

    3 good pitchers. I definitely wouldn't call any of them HOF pitchers. I think Wood and Prior definitely had HOF potential. I don't think Zambrano was ever that good. Wood and Prior definitely. Z, maybe.

Also, here's one more pitcher that was wanted over the offseason: Westbrook-6 GS, 27 1/3 IP, 32 H, 18 K/14 BB, 1 HBP, 6 HR, 7.90 ERA, 1.683 WHIP Not to mention, Westbrook has also been placed on the DL. Hendry and Rothschild are looking like friggin' geniuses right now...right now. This team is 1 game over 500 with one of the top payrolls in baseball. Lets not get carried away. And to get over .500 we only needed a long stretch of playing just Pirates and Nationals. Until then we weren't doing so hot. It's also kinda hard to call Hendry a genius when he has gambled and lost so many times on players. Just by random chance at least some of his gambles have to pay off simply due to the large number of them.

    LOL...he might be better off trying to skip the ball home, the same method used when trying to skip rocks on a lake. :lol: As fast as he is, I think he should have just tried outrunning the guy home. I think he would have had a better chance. Heh heh. When he was with the Cubs and he'd catch a shallow ball on the run I'd always think "keep running!"

    Pie had best not be starting against a lefty, much less one who's good enough to reach the majors. Pie can't even handle minor league lefties. why is he here than? Jock cant hit lefties, if Pie isnt going to start against lefties there is no reason to have Pie here to be a defensive sub and pinch runner. Jacque can't hit lefties consistently but he has gotten some hits against LHP. I wouldn't start Pie against a ML lefty at this point. I wouldn't start Jones against a high school lefty. He is pretty much the definition of futility vs. LHP, and has been for his entire career. Also, if the Cubs want to pump up Jacque's stats to increase his marketability then it would be highly advisable to have him face righties exclusively.

    If Lou would rather start Jacque Jones vs. an LHP than give the start to Pie then it's crystal clear that Pie absolutely positively needs to go back to Iowa.
