  1. I also agree with the sentiment of the thread title. For the current season Soriano is ranked 11th among 19 qualifying LF's in OPS according to ESPN's stats, so it's debatable whether he's even better than average for his position. His career OPS is only .837, and he turns 32 next January. I said back when Soriano signed that this would probably land on the short list of the worst contracts in the history of pro sports and I still think that's true.
  2. Pods sucks. He's the poor man's Juan Pierre. That's pretty damn bad.
  3. Stewart was crummy in 2005 and 2006. His 2007 numbers are a little better thanks to a fantastic June(1.005 OPS), but otherwise he hasn't done anything. I think those June numbers have got Jimbo wanting to play that lightning in a bottle game like he did with Randall Simon and Neifi.
  4. In all seriousness, based on the way things are going now, I believe there's a 40-50% chance that it will actually happen.
  5. I can't recall ever seeing such a powerless lineup. We're 112 games into the season and we have a lineup with 37 combined homers. That's astounding. It's like early 1900's deadball era stuff.
  6. Tonight's Cubs lineup has 37 home runs on the season, which is 3 more than Prince Fielder has hit.
  7. No, Fontenot is the new Augie.
  8. That's my guess. Fontenot's crappy July has probably put him on very thin ice and Lou appears to like DeRosa in the OF. We'll see a lot games with Floyd in LF, Jock/Pagan in CF, and DeRosa in RF. Murt will continue to enjoy the games from the dugout.
  9. I wasn't aware of that. That just makes it even more silly for Murt to be taking up a roster spot.
  10. So EPatt to the MIF to replace Fontenot, then DeRosa to the OF?.
  11. That's a pretty poor extrapolation. First of all, Ramirez missing the rest of the season in that case is 5 weeks. That timeframe puts Soriano back for the last 15 or so games plus the playoffs. Also, the Cubs were way out of contention by late August of 2005. There was no reason for Ramirez to come back to play 5-10 meaningless games. Yeah, but 4 weeks is probably just for the injury. Then there's the rehab, the warmup assignments (probably not in the minors in Sori's case). That'll take a couple weeks too. Then you can't expect him to be real productive the first couple weeks back, because he's rusty. I dunno, I don't think it's as poor an extrapolation as you do. where are you getting 4 weeks just for the injury? I think when the team says "out for up to 4 week", they're including everything. Really? I never think that. It's almost always longer than the timeframe they give, and it's usually because the player still needs to work up to MLB-ready form after the actual injury. I don't think he'd need more than 2 or 3 rehab games in the minors to test the quad.

Also, the Cubs were way out of contention by late August of 2005. There was no reason for Ramirez to come back to play 5-10 meaningless games. Soriano is also in much better shape than Aram was in 2005. Aram was a non-exercising doughboy with no muscle definition anywhere in his body.
  13. I don't. Murton should have been traded before July 31st, but since it's too late for that I think he should stay in Iowa for the rest of 2007 and be traded in the offseason. Same goes for Pie. Having them here now will just reduce their trade value in November.
  14. That was extremely disapointing to me as well. I think that told me all I need to know about Lou's feelings on Murton at this point. It was essentially the perfect storm for Murton to play. LHP on the mound (no excuse that he can't his RHP); LF open (no excuse that he can't play RF). Still, Lou essentially chose Fontenot over Murton. Not a good omen. Especially coming off Fontenot's July. There's absolutely no excuse for Lou to use at this point. Anything short of playing Murton in LF when Soriano is out is the equivalent of saying "I think Murton sucks." There's really no other interpretation at this point. It's goofy that Murton wasn't traded before the deadline. He could have been a big part of a package deal to get some immediate help, but instead we keep him, and for what? Lou would rather see Mike Freakin Fontenot on the field. I said this a few weeks ago: the opportunity cost of not trading Murton far outweighs what he will contribute as a Cubs player. He shouldn't still be here.
  15. I don't think Soriano is even close to being irreplacable. He had a terrible July and we kept winning so it is possible to get by without him. It would be nice to see Murt get some time but he's been sitting long enough to cool down from his hot hitting in Iowa so I'm not sure what he would give us in his first few starts. Lou will discard him if he's not hot immediately
  16. Murton was our best piece of trade bait and we kept him just so he could rot on the bench. It's so stupid.
  17. He's done. Even without the drug busts he would have had a hard time making anyone's roster next year. Can't imagine who'd want him now.
  18. Does it even matter at this point? He was already probably finished, this just puts a period at the end of the sentence.
  19. Hope they don't find needles, considering his nickname was "Shooter." I'd hate to see his nickname become the punchline of a bunch of tasteless jokes.
  20. why? It's not tryout camp. He failed early and why should he replace anyone? exactly. Murton was brought up to be a pinchhitter and an occassional starter. That is what he should be unless he proves himself differently. Oh god. Compare last season's stats of our entire OF and tell me who the top three are. Until then, try to talk about something else. You may make sense that way. You seem to be the one not making any sense. You now have a manager that says if you hit you play. Matt didn't and isn't. Using last year's stats, is totally meaningless. Gee, why not bring back Todd Walker? Why is Floyd playing then? Essentially he's Jeromy Burnitz with a lot less defense, power, and durability, but a bit more OBP. That's really not a very good player.
  21. I've argued the same thing in the past. Seems to me, you get a lot more chances to throw LF to home/2nd than you do RF to home/3rd/2nd. Cause and effect though. Is that because there are more opportunities, or are there more opportunities because the weaker arm is traditionally in LF and the stronger in RF? True. Ichiro has lost countless opportunities to throw because people don't like to run on him. If he had Moises Alou's arm he'd be throwing a lot more often.
  22. Just turned on gameday. I see Murton will sit long enough to cool off the hot streak he was on Iowa. Better to trade him now than keep setting him up to fail.
  23. Yeah it's funny. I should badmouth him more often.
  24. His newfound plate discipline was always an illusion. Wish Tim had search enabled so I could just copy my old posts on this. What happened in Washington was Soriano was pitched around with men on base because the Nats lineup sucked. With DLee and Aramis in the same lineup teams have to pitch to Soriano. He doesn't walk much when that happens. If we had a more scary #2 hitter than Theriot then Soriano would walk even less. Soriano 2006: 67 total walks AB BB None On: 435 25 Runners On: 212 42 Scoring Position: 117 36
